Who's in this time?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 October 2005 03:47 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I bet you are.

I am planning to try again, even though last time I tried Bush got "reelected" and I was sick the entire month, and I hardly made it past 2000 words. We'll see how this time goes.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

One thing I'm trying this year: I am stealing a plot. This might make things easier.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:33 (nineteen years ago)

Do you need to pay anything to enter?

pr00de, where's my car? (pr00de), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:33 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I bet you are.

Naturellement.

Do you need to pay anything to enter?

Nope, totally free. Read up on the page -- donations are encouraged but not required.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

Nice. I was thinking of the Anvil Press 3-day novel writing contest. Fifty friggin dollars to enter that thing. Of course, it keeps you from chickening out, too...

pr00de, where's my car? (pr00de), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

Does this mean you're asking for idea of things to put in your novel, Ned? Because I have an idea: Soapbox racers!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:44 (nineteen years ago)

Er, I wasn't asking but if you want to give me some, sure. I do know that one chapter will feature the up and coming rock sensation TONIGHT! Led by Rex TONIGHT!, their songs are all about being where one is TONIGHT! And TONIGHT! is a night for rock TONIGHT!, yes TONIGHT!

(As based on the astoundingly bad band who played after Minmae the other week who, in the middle of another generic 70s bar band song, had their lead singer suddenly shriek out in a much higher volume than he had been singing "TONIGHT!" He repeated this later in the song.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:53 (nineteen years ago)

Wonder what the song was called...

pr00de, where's my car? (pr00de), Thursday, 6 October 2005 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

I am currently participating in what looks like it could be called the National Novel Writing 2003-through-2007 Type Period. Wish me luck.

nabiscothingy, Thursday, 6 October 2005 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

Cripes, its nano time again ALREADY? Oy, what a year.

Every year I do this and something stymies me - flu, broken laptop PC, work stress.

Should I give it another burl? :/ I've lost a lot of confidence in my writing abilities in recent years :(

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2005 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

YES! Burl, Trayce! Burl! I mean, at least give it a shot. Why not?

pr00de, where's my car? (pr00de), Thursday, 6 October 2005 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

You could even rename it NaShSWriMo, National Short Story Writing Month. So long as you don't try to prounce the abbreviation.

pr00de, where's my car? (pr00de), Thursday, 6 October 2005 06:23 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, why not. I'm only trying to write my phd proposal at the same time, after all.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 06:29 (nineteen years ago)

Heh yeah I'm great at short stories... i'm crapola at novels :(

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2005 06:54 (nineteen years ago)

So do a load of linked short stories, base them all around one spot or something.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 06:57 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah thats what I planned on last year. I did 2 stories then kinda ran out of steam.

It has just occurred to me that this year I wont be working in Nov (I leave my current job in 2 weeks), so maybe I should have a damn serious crack at a LOT of writing, and try and pitch some to mags and contests afterwards.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2005 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

I think that's a marvellous idea. I quit my job at the start of this month, and am using it as an opportunity to get some writing done like I'd always promised myself i would.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 07:14 (nineteen years ago)

i have an idea for a book where Harrison Ford actually becomes US President, then by an awesome coincidence, winds up in a real-life Clancy-esque intrigue. DON'T STEAL MY IDEA!

Lee F# (fsharp), Thursday, 6 October 2005 07:21 (nineteen years ago)

Eh. I managed it in 2002, and 2003, got halfway in 2004, and am currently deep into a rewrite of my 2002 effort, which is actually going well, if slowly. Can I tear myself away from it? Should I land myself with another 50,000 words it'll take me 3 years to edit? Gah.
Baty's email is lurking in my inbox like a leftover pill when you swore you wouldn't do pills any more.

Zora (Zora), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

(As based on the astoundingly bad band who played after Minmae the other week who, in the middle of another generic 70s bar band song, had their lead singer suddenly shriek out in a much higher volume than he had been singing "TONIGHT!" He repeated this later in the song.)

Was this band fronted by Billy Corgan, then?

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:11 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, are you planning on beating last year's record? Shaving a few days off your time? Perhaps writing more than one?

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

Ned's setting himself the target of a 500,000 word novel. With footnotes.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

In that case I have to sign up just to watch Ned's word count bar. Writing as spectator sport for the win.

Zora (Zora), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:22 (nineteen years ago)

I'm in! I tried in 2003 and failed miserably, but actually managed to finish last year. I've got the fear already but that queasy buzz of excitement too.

I'm registered as quilldriver, if anyone's feeling nosy.

Vicky

Surfer_Stone_Rosalita (Surfer_Stone_Rosalita), Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

Well I just got my yearly hello sign up again email from NanoCru2005 so, I guess thats a sign. Or something.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

DO IT TRAYCE YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

Was this band fronted by Billy Corgan, then?

*administers beatings*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 October 2005 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
COUNTING DOWN. Get ready, etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

Also, Douglas has started up the musical equivalent over on ILM:

announcing NaSoAlMo 2005

Dare anyone do both?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Madness, Ned!

But, I did sign up for the writing one as jsm.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

If I didn't have a job, I would do both. But for some reason, I always seem to be employed during November.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

So is it wise to think up scenarios and whatnot beforehand? I'm doing this as well, and have an idea, but few particulars.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Ned asked: Dare anyone do both?

I did both last year! I have no life!!

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

So it's begun. I believe I should feel more panic-stricken.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm more casual about it. ;-) After my last series of hyperactive sprints, I figure this year will be more of an amble -- I'll do the first chapter tonight, as work is too full of other things today to allow me the time to putter away at it here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

I'm feeling fairly pleased as I'm well ahead of the word-count so far.
I actually planned a vague structure this year, so that should see me right.
i have lost my 2003 t-shirt though, which is a shame.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

I won't be doing it again this year. My wife is doing it again this year. As an added incentive to anyone who doubts their own ability, what she wrote last November turned out to be the germ of a novel that she sent out to publishers a couple of weeks ago.

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

:-D Well done! I've done similarly but trying to get the attention of agents is harder than I guessed, so I'm concentrating on some nonfiction work first that is more set in publication stone, ie Marooned and the like.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, that's great, adamrl! Good luck to her.

Well, I have 64 words so far. *cough* Only another 1,603 to go today, and an outline of some sort would be nice, I suppose.

Surfer_Stone_Rosalita (Surfer_Stone_Rosalita), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

1600ish so far, on track for a first day I guess! My bf did over 5k words in a day - bastard. Still hes had the story he's doing in his head, as a game hes working on, for a long time, so its easier for him I guess.

I'm totally winging it this year, more so than usual. Posted a bit up on my LJ, tho you have to be logged in to see it...

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

i have an idea for a novel that i'd like to write but i'm committed to write a screenplay this month!

so maybe that sorta counts

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

First chapter done, yay two thousand words. Definitely going to be a slow pace for me this time, but I'm not minding -- I don't think my effort is deathless, but it will be a chance to test out some ideas. I'll probably post a link to a complete version once it's all done.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:45 (nineteen years ago)

i thought of doing this, but then realized i have no good ideas!

oh well.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:29 (nineteen years ago)

Well come up with a bad one! Evils tacos plot to take over the world by giving people the runs. Go for it, it's all yours!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

A beautiful plot! MONSTROTACO

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

and his best friend should be a talking pie

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

i dont like the sounds of that

i was thinking of turning a story of mine ive been writing into something longer, like novella (even though novella's BUG ME) length, but.. I DUNNO.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:50 (nineteen years ago)

NaNoWriMos are supposed to be 50,000 words -- that's basically a novella, right? A short novel, at best.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 05:01 (nineteen years ago)

I don't have any real ideas either, but I started writing today during a break at work, about a woman who realizes she is working with idiots. It will possibly become a romance, or a murder/thriller sort of thing. It's promising so far.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 05:18 (nineteen years ago)

I think I might do this. I have two chapters written.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

50,000 words is about the length of The Great Gatsby. I'd do it but I've got 10,000 words due on Monday and it's not a work of fiction dammit.

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

Hope everyone's doing well. My easy pace this time out has proven to be just what I needed -- work has been so busy with extra hours, and I've been so tired, that one chapter a day is really enough! Up to 6000 words so far -- my profile's here, FWIW.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 November 2005 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

Still only hovering around 3k words - a little behind - but Ive been a bit flat out (and a tad distracted by other things). Still, I am loving my story so far, it has a simple, funny voice I am really enjoying writing in.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 3 November 2005 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

Six thou and going along nicely

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 3 November 2005 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

right back atcha, Ned

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 3 November 2005 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

I looked over the story I was thinking of writing and bailed, and I feel much better now.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 4 November 2005 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

I totally wasnt going to do Nano this year.

Then I developed a crush on my idea. I'm seriously having fun with it like I havent with any writing in a long time; really, if I dont make 50k in a month I dont care, because this story is special and I'll be finishing it somehow anyway I think.

I have a certain person to thank profusely for being me muse, but he knows who he is, and I'm not telling.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 4 November 2005 01:15 (nineteen years ago)

Why thank you. Er, wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 November 2005 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

My story is definitely the least...I don't want to say 'invested' of what I've come up with, but it's definitely more of a formal exercise. I'm almost thinking that in the end I will have material for short stories more than a cohesive narrative, but there is an overarching story and intertwining that will happen as it does. I switch between serious and silly -- this is more or less serious, so next year's will be silly, and I know I'm already looking forward to that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 November 2005 01:32 (nineteen years ago)

Hahah Ned ;)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 4 November 2005 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

Hm. 518 words. But, they're pretty good ones. I got sidetracked by the science experiments.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 4 November 2005 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

Wahey, over the 10000 mark. If I can find a pace to make it to halfway by the time I have vacation on Veteran's Day weekend then I'll be doing fine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 November 2005 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

I hate you ;P

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 6 November 2005 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

:-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 November 2005 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

Aw! I meant, I wuv you! Honest =)

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 6 November 2005 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

*merry* Koala tacos for all!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 November 2005 06:48 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway. Hit 20,000, which sets me in good stead for going over halfway by the time I do the SF trip. After that it's a steady 2000 a day with breathing space for holidays and whatnot. I can live with that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

god, im behind... I knew fulltime work would make this difficult :/

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 01:29 (nineteen years ago)

It doesn't seem to stop Ned...

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

He is remorseless

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 07:34 (nineteen years ago)

It's all about finding the time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

I am bailing. I am a 750 words or less kind of person.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

For me it isnt about finding the time so much as applying/using the time I have had. IOW, not being LAZY *slaps self about a bit*.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

24,000 plus, almost halfway done. When I hit that halfway point then I'll finally feel like I'm getting somewhere.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 06:14 (nineteen years ago)

Ned, from your posts I always like you very much, but at the same time, right now, and for things NaNo-related, I dislike you very much :-)

I am almost exactly half you, at 12,466 words. Gah! But I hope to catch up to the 15,000 I'm supposed to be on today, and I like my book. So that's good.

Surfer_Stone_Rosalita (Surfer_Stone_Rosalita), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

So far, so pleasant

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 10 November 2005 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

Hm. One person on the Manchester forum already has 50k. I have 8k. I need, like, amphetamines or something. But well done to you guys who are on target. \o/

Zora (Zora), Thursday, 10 November 2005 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

We do try. And yay, past the halfway point to 26,000 -- just where I wanted to be before going on my trip. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 November 2005 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

I have a busy weekend ahead if I am even remotely gonna catch up :(

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 11 November 2005 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck, this sucks. I've had "NaNo to 8,000" in my to-do for two days.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Friday, 11 November 2005 04:59 (nineteen years ago)

Dont worry I only have about 4000 words and a lot of notes :/

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 11 November 2005 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

I just read my last sentence from last night.

Shelley laughed. “Marvellous. I’ll put the kettle on.”

I feel totally uninspired to pick up where I left off. It's so banal.

Zora (Zora), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

Today's news: inspiration is for suckers. I wrote 3239 words today, even if they were utter tosh. I feel good about it. I can go out drinking now.

Zora (Zora), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'll drink to that, having just broken the 10k barrier.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Saturday, 12 November 2005 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

30,000 down. All is well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

*cries*

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

Relax, have a taco.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

After an activity filled day 35,000, which is deeply necessary as I won't be able to do any all weekend.

Sorry Trayce, don't cry.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'll taco you in a minute Ned ;P grr =)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

I think you could get at least 10,000 words out of cursing Ned's name.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

Hehehe.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

So mean!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
So it's December 1st! Who finished?

I finished in that I got 50,253 words down and hence earned my "winner" stripes, but I was wandering around plot-less for so long that my novel is mostly just bloat at this point. I have actually found a plot now, but I reckon I still have half the novel to write...! I like where it's going, though, and will persevere. There's NaNoFiMo (http://www.nanofimo.org/) if anyone's interested...

Surfer_Stone_Rosalita (Surfer_Stone_Rosalita), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

I got 50035 but only by summarising the 12 chapters making up the second half of the novel. I will be NaNoFiMo-ing by myself in january.

Zora (Zora), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

ten months pass...
So who's done this in past and is doing it again.

I'm seriously going to try this year (mostly to motivate myself writing) but worry about keeping up productivity.

. . .and a soda on the side (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

Never finished last year but I was bogged down and also feeling pretty negative about other things, so my attention was elsewhere. Might try again, but we have to do a new thread. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

I am not brave enough to start a new thread as this whole prospect is daunting!

. . .and a soda on the side (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

i would love to try this but i'm always so busy with other creative projects in november...

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

I am not brave enough to start a new thread as this whole prospect is daunting!

Hey, you gotta be brave to start with!

Take further talk here:
