jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

It's no Chicago 18, but that's a pretty kick-ass cover.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

I just looked at Allmusic. Fuckin' A they have a lot of releases.

Df'nM (OutDatWay), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

I brought some veggie chili today but I don't want to eat it. Instead I think I will go to Steve's. Kenan, if you are interested, meet me outside at 12:30 SHARP, or if you're a couple of minutes late and miss me, it's under the Chicago Brown line stop, across from Pearl and next to Bar Louie.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I already ate. Sorry.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

HI DERE

im in chicago, like, totally! funny!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

Jaymc, I think you mean some yamataka eye shit!

Trust me, you'd rather have me correct you than a pissed-off noise dude!

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Mandee!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Mandee!

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, Adam. I don't think any noise dudes read the Chicago threads!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

What about me?
I have Fushitsusha and Jackie-O-Motherfucker and Wolf Eyes on my iPod.

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

it's nice here!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

it's nice here too

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Talk more, Chicago thread!

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

I just got back from a lackluster Chinese food outing with coworkers. It's beauuuuuuutiful outside and none of us should be forced to be indoors. Bleh.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

what are everyone's weekend plans? or did we do this?

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

It's nice that you eat with your co-workers

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

What are your weekend plans, Lion-O?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

ummmm...I don't really have any!

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

I brought mango with chilli powder sprinkled on top. A coworker gave me a whole bag of lettuce since she went out to eat with her mom and it would go bad anyway. Then another coworker gave me some spinach and onions and avocado to put on top, because it was extra and would have gone bad. I need to remember to not bring lunch on Fridays more often! Yum.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

I've got g-g-gigs, and that's it. I'm hoping for some time on Sunday to clean the apartment and play some SNES.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Mandee!

So, I have probably missed some of the conversation in the other thread, because I was at this Wal-Mart forum thingie (more on that later, believe you me!) but...

I bought A Million Little Pieces yesterday, right? And I started reading it last night and this morning I was reading it while I was brushing my teeth (I don't get a lot of time for pleasure reading and I was really into the book) and I got to the part in the book that Amanda and Eazy should never EVER ever never ever read ever and I had to go lie down for about five minutes because I was sure I would either vomit/pass out. I skipped the rest of that passage.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

I give you my word that I will never ever ever read that part of that book. (Shudder)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

What is it? I'll Google it.

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

I WANA GO OUTSIDE INTO CHICAGO!!

im hungry, too. i want a chicago hot dog.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

Where are you, Mandee? Are you trapped?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Type "sauerkraut" if yes.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

I read it... and survived! And I have major phobias!

I want to go read more now, instead of sitting at my desk for the next 3 and a half hours. Hmm... I might have to go to the bathroom REAL BAD this afternoon and A LOT. Ideally, I would read outside as I hear (here) that it's beautiful, but that would be a bit too obvious.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

You're staying in Wrigleyville, right? Lotsa hot dogs up in dere.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

The upside to this afternoon is that some sales guy just dropped off 2 packages of jumbo Mike & Ikes. So much sugar!

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh, well, I've got the Million Little Pieces unabridged audiobook (bought at Powell's on Lincoln for $5 a year or two ago), but now I wonder...

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

skip the dental work section unless you have someone to catch you when you pass out!!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

I've stayed in Wrigleyville. I ate Dunkin' Donuts there.

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Mmm... Donuts...

Operation Read MLP while at work will begin in T minus 16 minutes.
Set your clocks!

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

HOT DOUGS.

I haven't been there since the first time I visited Chicago. Someone take me back.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

Wow. I got back from lunchtime to find out I don't have anything to do.

Df'nM (OutDatWay), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

jenny-Did the Wal-Mart forum have to do with their no-union policy, by any chance? I was reading a history of the Wobblies the other day and it made me angrier and angrier with big companies.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

Martin Amis has a long section about dentistry in his memoir 'Experience', but it's more funny than hard to sit through.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

I STILL NEED TO VISIT HOT DOUGS.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

JEFF PTTL I HAVE A GIRLS ALOUD BADGE FOR YOU

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

ARGH WHY IS MY BOSS STILL HERE?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

Btw, after the Fitzgerald's show, one of my bandmates introduced the St00ges to Lawrence's (they were skeptical about shrimp in Chicago, but ended up loving it) and then stayed in a dead hooker motel for two hours before his flight.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

How do those places (fleabag hotels) stay in business? Is it really because of hookers? I honestly don't know the answer to this question.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'll quote from his e-mail:

All the regular places were $129 a night so N1ck dropped me
off at the Stardust Motel. Dude. I got an hourly rate cause I was only gonna be there for 2 hours. Dude. It was the most broke down, skuzzy room I have ever seen or smelled. It had holes in the walls. And get this, the room had a king size bed with a big ass mirror above it on the ceiling. The frame of the ceiling mirror was covered in red shag carpet. So I took off the bedspread and laid down on the bed to watch tv for a minute before I went to sleep for 2 hours. They didn't have pay per view porn, this wasn't
that type of place.....they just had straight up free porn. Yup. I stayed in a pay by the hour nasty ass motel. I was half expecting some Thai transvestite to knock on my door and offer me services."

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Well, then. I guess it is custom-tailored for hookers and their work. Wow. I appreciate your bandmate's candor.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, that may have been TMI. Nevertheless, I thought the Heart O' Chicago motel was scuzzy, and I clearly had no idea.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

Transient hotels - they cater to homeless/indegent/terminally ill people who can't afford the whole credit check/deposit process of renting a real apt and might not need it for long. And, on preview, hookers!

Jocelyn: The forum was two-parts. The first was a panel discussion with an alderman (Brookins, the southside dude who voted to let a Wal-Mart in his ward), a senator, and two community organizers talking about Wal-Mart in Chicago and the Big Box Living Wage ordinace. That was really fascinating. We talked some about unions (it was at UNITE Hall so it was attended largely by union folks), but that part was more of a debate about Wal-Mart and its potential effect on the community.

The second part was a presentation by WalmartWatch.com, which is an anti-Wal-Mart lobbying and activist group. They basically gave some debate ammo, all of which gears up to High Expectations Week (Nov. 13-19) and the release of this movie, which I have to now organize a screening for because the walmartwatch.com guy is sending me a free copy and some promo materials.

Ummm... can anybody think of a space to show a movie that is free or very cheap?

PS I *heart* the Wobblies.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Ummm... can anybody think of a space to show a movie that is free or very cheap?

I can't -- but I wonder if someone at Women in the Director's Chair would be able to help you.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

The Potbelly vegetarian (read: CHEEESE) sandwich is OK, but it's so expensive! A medium sandwich, chips, and a fountain drink ends up being like $8, way too much for crappy fast food.

Costellos, though, the one time I had it, was delicious, and they have 3-4 vegetarian sandwiches that are actually DISTINGUISHABLE from each other, not just variations on lettuce+tomato+cheese.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

are you on weight watchers, jeff? is 7.5 a lot of points?

Uh huh, 7.5 isn't bad, and usually my lunch is lighter, i'm alotted 24 for the day. My breakfast is usually from 4 to 6. That leaves me anywhere from 10 to 14 points for dinner. I don't eat dinner on Thursdays so I get a smoothie during my break.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

Did you go to the Roscoe Costello's or the.....other one?

Just curious.

They have chipotle mayo!

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

Hey jaymc, you got points in the ILX Dead Pool League. I didn't want to say anything on the Rosa Parks thread because it seemed disrespectful.

Ooh, I forgot that I picked her! I'll revive the thread...

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

score!

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

How do you determine points? And what do you have against Thursdays?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

I went to the Costello's in Lincoln Square.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Nick, you are insane. One of the best things about Potbelly's is how CHEAP it is. All of the sandwiches are like $3.79, aren't they? Sure, I guess if you get chips and a drink, it's more expensive (I never do, anyway) -- but where can you get a cheaper sandwich? A six-inch veggie at Subway is maybe a few cents cheaper, but I also think it's a bit smaller. And the smallest sandwich at Quizno's is like $4.50.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

I had scrambled eggs, potatoes and a bagel this morning at Under 55 ($4.55!) and just went and got coffee.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

There's no Chicago 20, is there?

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

what does that even mean?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

I think we are in need of a new thread, right?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

APOLOGIES: When I was talking about Potbelly upthread, I was thinking of Quiznos. It's Quiznos that's expensive but tasty. Potbelly is cheap and gross, because their veggie sandwich is 93% mushrooms.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Try the pizza one! The marinara sauce is not overbearing! Not a crazy amount of cheese! Delish!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Quiznos is expensive.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone wanna watch the sox tonight? I'm meeting up with a few other folks after work downtown. Email me if you're interested.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

You know, I don't think I ever noticed that Potbelly's had a pizza sandwich until like two weeks ago. I like their sandwiches, but the atmosphere in there during the lunch rush makes me want to kill.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

really? i kinda like it. most everyone who works there isn't going too crazy & when they're on top of it, it's like a well-oiled machine.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

I would Kelsey, but I have to go home after work on account of the mutts. Coming all the way back sounds unappealing since I have to do it all again tomorrow and the next day and into eternity until my life shapes up.

I don't like all the shouting at Potbelly. I don't like shouting my order -- it makes me embarrassed to shout about my food.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

No, I hate it. Everyone's herded along, you have to strain to bark your order out from halfway down the line before you even get to the counter, there's some old guy with a guitar singing "Brown Eyed Girl" on a ledge above, as if it's not already so noisy in there, etc.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Amanda OTM about the shouting.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

By the way, I just checked and there is no Chicago 20 album. There is a live album that was released between 19 and 21, so maybe that counts, but the band is really inconsistent as to when live albums have counted or not (i.e., Chicago IV was a live one, but a live album that came out between 16 and 17 didn't take a number). I am leaving this up to Kenan.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about the shouting. I guess today was so calm & hardly busy that I forgot how crazy it can all seem.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

Usually at the Potbelly in my building it's some girl sitting way up in the ceiling who's singing "What if God Was One of Us" and it's just an embarrassing situation all around.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

I found out today that there are FOUR vegetarians in my office!!! Two of us eat fish on occassion, though.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

Potbelly's also reminds me of high-school choir or theatre for some reason. I don't know why. Not like we went to Potbelly's after choir field trips or anything -- it's just the whole atmosphere of the place, like a forced wackiness, maybe.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

Are people SUPPOSED to sing at Potbelly?? There's one on State St. but I've never been.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

I think there are two vegetarians (including me) and a vegan in my deparment.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Absolutely. Although I'm with Kelsey on the employees -- they're calm and seem pretty happy for the most part. That's a good sign.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

There are zero vegetarians in my department. They think I'm a vegetarian because I eat tofu on occasion.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

Three vegetarians, out of seven fulltime employees!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

The thing about the people singing on the ledges: I understand having performers at a coffee shop in the evening, when there are no lines and everyone is just peacefully sitting at tables drinking coffee. But in the middle of the lunch rush, with all of the bustle and chatter, who wants to deal with some hack belting out "Ob-La-Di" on top of all that?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

I have never seen someone singing at a Potbelly's.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

the girl that sings at my potbelly is great b/c she sings joni mitchell (well) & a few other samplins. plus, she's someone john would totally have a crush on. hell, i have a crush on her!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

WHERE IS THIS GIRL

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

It really seems like more of a punishment than an opportunity.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

the potbelly on ontario, dude. but only once in a while.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, haha, A: "You are banished to sing for a full hour in a cramped space above a room full of people who don't give a shit."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

"unless you're cute & crushworthy & then some freak with talk about you on the internet."

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

...and if you find yourself in a crowded eatery and you hear the strains of "A Case of You", think of our stalwart heroine, doing her time in silence and waiting for her sentence to finally come to an end.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

A few years back EL suggested that we play those lunch hours.

About a year ago Billy Corgan played at the one on Monroe and Dearborn.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Some guy sang ALL of Tangled Up in Blue when I was at Potbelly on Saturday. At least he was better than the guy doing acoustic Green Day covers.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

I guess it's good practice, right?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

It's getting paid to noodle around with a guitar - as long as you're not caught up in everyone seeing you express yourself, it'd probably be an easy 20 bucks.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

(er, by "see you" I meant as long as you don't care if anyone actually listens and enjoys what you're doing...)

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

$20 + a free sandwich or two....

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, by the way, I saw R. Kelly last week do a 'Trapped In The Closet' chapter on the Video Music Awards -- he was standing alone in a suit on a bedroom set, and he played all the parts.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

haha! i have the videos to all the chapters b/c it came with my cd. they're great.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:03 (nineteen years ago)
