They're ladies! And they're electric! And ther's a whole LAND of them! The mathematical possibilities are mind boggling.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 26 November 2005 07:06 (nineteen years ago)

I just realized that I may have made an entire Chicago thread NSFW. Sorry. Start another one if you must. But you gotta admit... it's a great album cover, and a great title.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 26 November 2005 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

And a great fucking album!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 26 November 2005 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

The back of my high school letter jacket said "Voodoo Child."

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 26 November 2005 07:13 (nineteen years ago)

OMG this album... holy shit you guys. It's like Muddy Waters went into a music store, and Satan was behind the counter, and he said, "I don't need all these guitars. I want to trade all my guitars in for Marshall stacks. I only need one guitar, but here's the thing -- I need it to constantly be in flames." And so it's Muddy Waters, Marshall stacks to the heavens, and constant flames. That's this record.

And no, I'm not high. Shut up.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 26 November 2005 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

Would you throw things at me if I said hat Jimi Hendrix is one of the best jazz musicians of all time?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 26 November 2005 07:53 (nineteen years ago)

no.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 26 November 2005 07:54 (nineteen years ago)

nick: why do you have cool synths and i don't?

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 26 November 2005 07:54 (nineteen years ago)

It's a really cheap synth! I think it was like $300 or something like that. But now no one will hear my songs because they're on the old thread. :(

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 26 November 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

I guess I could just relink them. Here we go:

Solresol: http://s27.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2V355X03OG6ZV01X96U523VRVI

Bird-Eyed Dog: http://s28.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0WHN0EBQH5WWC3B0Y8B0OHX6XM

I think I might go to the show at the Ice Factory tonight; it's Violence Ammunition, who do weird electronic stuff, and some hip hop act.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 26 November 2005 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Most of the sounds on that synth are pretty lame but you can reprogram them so I just programmed a bunch of sounds that sound like cheezy analog whines because that's the kind of keyboard sound that I like.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 26 November 2005 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

They have this really awesome Juno synth at the Ice Factory that I always want to use on every song because it sounds so plastic and great but so far we've just used it on two songs, and Seth played the part on one because he's a better keyboard player than any of us.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 26 November 2005 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

I would throw things at you, Kenan.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 26 November 2005 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

I would too, but, reflecting lack of conviction, they would only be foam packing peanuts. Or maybe Nerf balls.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 26 November 2005 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

and Seth played the part on one because he's a better keyboard player than any of us.

That's fun that you get to credit him in the liner notes, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 26 November 2005 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

As someone who has made similar bold, daring, and it's-just-so-crazy-it-might-work sort of claims (including the very same one you make above), Kenan, I would, at the very least, offer you an umbrella. If I had one on me.

giboyeux (skowly), Saturday, 26 November 2005 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

you're a peach.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 26 November 2005 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

I would throw Tootsie rolls and Dum Dum lollipops, because when you walk, it's a parade.

Where does this link go when you click it?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Saturday, 26 November 2005 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

Okay nevermind.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Saturday, 26 November 2005 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

Solresol! It's a language and stuff. Does that synth have a really nice portamento, or is someone just going nuts with the pitch-bend wheel? And are these the fruits of the "working quickly" plan?

In the cool-synth sweepstakes I'm surprised more people outside electronic music don't just use a laptop and MIDI controller: assuming you were going to own a laptop anyway, the base cost of that would be way lower than most nice synths. I suppose you'd have to put a little more money in there to get the latency down to absolutely perfect, but still. I've been running my computer output to an amp, micing it up, and re-recording it, and it's like the perfect room-sound hardware synth.

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 26 November 2005 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

It's just me abusing the pitch-bend wheel because I don't know how to play keyboards properly.

HEY, I got offered a new job! I think I'm going to take it, but help me through the pros and cons here:

PROS
1. It's in the news/media field. I would spend my time writing (not creatively), editing, doing research online, and possibly a little HTML work. I would not have to answer any phones, make any copies, type any letters, etc.
2. The hours are such that it's possible that if I end up going back to school I might be able to keep working there.
3. The boss seems to REALLY want to hire me, and has already made some concessions to intice me (see below), so there's room for me to bargain a little.
4. The work generally seems a lot more interesting and challenging than what I'm doing now.

CONS and EQUIVOCATIONS
1. I would have to be at work at 6:30 AM every day, and it's in Evanston, so I'd be waking up at 5:30 every day at the latest. (On the other hand, I'd be done every day around 2:30, even when I'm up to working full time, and I get more work done in the morning anyways.)
2. It's a deadline-based environment, so it can be fairly hectic, especially first thing in the morning. (But I could probably use the challenge, might make work more interesting instead of totally dull.)
3. There will be some evening and Sunday work involved (but only an hour or two every couple of days, and I can do it from home).
4. This is the big one; the pay/hour situation is really complicated and I'm still trying to figure it out:
a. Because of how they do things, they have to start me out at part-time and at a certain pay rate which is a couple of bucks less per hour than my current pay.
b. But the boss dude outlined a plan for me wherein I would receive an incremental raise every two weeks, while I'm training.
c. And he also said he would officially put me on the payroll while I'm on my two weeks notice at my current job, so when I actually start working at the new job, I'd already be on the second pay scale (which is still below what I make now).
d. And he guaranteed that I'd be working full-time at the latest by the beginning of February (unless I'm totally fucking up), and possibly before then if the demand for full-time workers becomes really high.
e. So I'll probably be taking a pay cut for a month or two, but after that, I should be back up to at least what I'm making now, and possibly a little more.

So I'm mulling it over, but I think I'm really ready for a change, so I'll probably take it. I have to decide by Monday. So give input if you have it.

I sold $180 worth of CDs and DVDs to Reckless this afternoon.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 26 November 2005 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

PRO/CON: I would probably be on ILX a LOT less.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 26 November 2005 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

If you trust that the boss is going to follow through with his promised raises, and get all that stuff in writing, and can afford to absorb a pay cut for a few months, I'd take it. It sounds interesting, and it would be a good resume builder even if you don't want to work there forever.

And think how great it will be to tell your current job that you are leaving to do something that actually takes skillz and stuff.

Although getting up that early might ruin me a little, but I suppose I'd get used to it.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Sunday, 27 November 2005 00:38 (nineteen years ago)

Con #4 screams RUN AWAY FAST.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 27 November 2005 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure why I'm so nervous about this, maybe I'm overcaffeinated. I looked at the numbers again, and if he follows the pay guidelines he outlined for me, I'll be making the same pay per hour I'm making now by Jan. 1st, and if I do go full time in February, I'll be making more money. I guess it's just the issue of me not knowing for sure if I can trust this guy or not. He seemed trustworthy, we had a good talk, and it looked like a "real office," but you can never know for sure, I guess. Do you think if I email him with the pay schedule he outlined for me and ask him to affirm it by reply email, that that's documentation enough, or do I need to ask him to sign something? Because I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that, that's essentially like me calling him a liar.
Essentially, even though that pay/part-time thing I outlined looks complicated, I understand it and it makes sense: it's basically the "three-month trial period" thing that most jobs have, except that you're officially a part-time employee during your trial period because they want you to stick to learning the basics (the work in the morning is different from the work in the afternoon).
I guess since I'm trying to justify this all positively, that's probably an indication that I want to take the job, despite all my worrying.

n/a (Nick A.), Sunday, 27 November 2005 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

get all that stuff in writing

yes yes yes. i have heard too many horror stories of jobs that had all these promises that they didn't follow through with. you're not calling the guy untrustworthy, you're just being cautious and protecting yourself. though maybe an email would be fine, i don't know about that sort of thing. just something in writing.

but it really does sound like you want to take the job...it would be cool to be doing something new, it seems.

maybe a long commute, but you could get lots of reading done!

Juulia (julesbdules), Sunday, 27 November 2005 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

I would probably just drive, it would take like twice as long to take the El out there I think.

n/a (Nick A.), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

This isn't obituaries, is it, Nick? I was wondering when you first mentioned Evanston a few weeks ago.

I'm not getting an image at the start of this thread.

Not to be confused with... /http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000I25G.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Eazy (Eazy), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

Rather than print it out and present it for a signature, I would email him the pay raise schedule as you understand it, and say something like, "I wanted to confirm that this is the pay schedule that you outlined. I am very interested in the job, but would like to have our agreement in writing."

That way he can reply to the email, which I think is good enough (I'm not a lawyer yet, though, so I can't say for certain) or he'll have something printed out for you all official like. OR he'll tell you that there's no need to put any of this in writing, in which case DO NOT TAKE THE JOB. (If he says that it's all outlined in the employee manual and there's not need to put it in writing DO NOT TAKE THE JOB then, either, because he's just blowing smoke up your ass.)

Basically, it's not out of the ordinary in the least to ask for this kind of info in writing, especially when it's a weird pay agreement like this one. Any legit employer who is really interested in hiring you will do this, because it's not big deal. The writing would outline the increase agreement and say something about how it doesn't bind either of you to a term of employment of a certain length or something so they can fire you if you suck (which you don't, but the employer has a right to protect itself, too). If this guy acts even remotely reluctant to put something in writing for you, he's up to no good, and that is the truth.

Asking for this stuff in writing is a good way to test to make sure they are on the up and up.

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:20 (nineteen years ago)

How will Sarah get to work if you have the car?

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

L'autobus. It's a straight shot down Division and then a short walk from there.

I'm tired of thinking about it. Here's the plan. Very soon I'm going to go to the Ice Factory and hope that the show is stupid and/or entertaining enough to get my mind off all this. I will probably also drink some cheap beer. Then I will come home and get some sleep. Tomorrow I will wake up and draft an email to the dude with my questions, concerns, and understanding of what the pay schedule would be. Then I will send it and forget it until I get a response. Then Sarah will come home and take care of me.

n/a (Nick A.), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

And it's not obituaries. I WISH it were obituaries! I'm not trying to be mysterious about the job itself, it's just not a GLAMOUR thing where everyone's going to be like OOOH WE'RE SO EXCITED!!! It's a company that essentially finds and digests relevant news information for bigger companies that are too busy to do so on their own.

n/a (Nick A.), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:33 (nineteen years ago)

I interviewed for an obituary-writing job in Evanston during the dot-com era but couldn't take the job because of some scheduling, and then a friend of mine swooped in and took it.

Questions during my interview included: If you could only have one food, what would it be?; and If you could have one magic power, what would it be?

Eazy (Eazy), Sunday, 27 November 2005 03:35 (nineteen years ago)

I think they should make another TV show based on a New Yorker cartoon. I'm going to pitch Roz Chast's Harried, Worried Mother.

I've actually been thinking a lot lately about when I capitalize and when I don't and why.

i never capitalize (freakish, i know!), and i attribute it to exhaustion. i used to capitalize, and correct typos (and make less typos), but now i can't be arsed. (xp--i like to do the ALL CAPS thing sometimes though to be EMPHATIC)

i like to put all my words on the same level playing field, to see them as collections of letters bumping up against one another, democratically.

i like this reason much better though.

sarah, post a link to your christmas wallpaper! i've kinda wanted wallpaper like that...something all cozy looking.

katie holmes is also a bad actress. hi, curling one corner of your lip upwards doesn't count as character development.

re: tobey maguire . . . he is the exact same guy in every role. his voice is monotone, he has yet to convince me as a character. he doesn't drive me as batty as he used to, but i think he's way way overrated as an actor.

Yeah, I agree that Holmes is a bad actress. Definitely the weak link on Dawson's Creek. I used to make fun of Michelle Williams on that show for always making pouty lips and folding her arms over her chest, but she could also be quite good.

Re Maguire's voice: monotone, yes, but with that charming scratch to it! Is he the exact same guy? Hmmmm. It's an odd thing to say, comparing The Ice Storm to Spider-Man, but I guess he does have that slightly nervous, wide-eyed wonder about everything in both films.

And, I suppose, in Wonder Boys and Seabiscuit, too.

Btw Kelsey, I know it's a few days off, but since you asked: on Friday night I'm playing at the Cabooze in Mpls (at about 11 pm) and on Saturday I'm playing 3-4 songs at a multi-band Prince tribute at the Fine Line Cafe (starts at 8).

No idea what we're going to do on Saturday afternoon/early evening, but hopefully it will involve a museum and Galactic Pizza.

*sigh*

If I don't do it, I guess no one will.

YES. And what was the abortion movie? that is slipping my mind. his range is so completely narrow. I don't think he's Mr. Awful, but I never really enjoy any film he's been in. Certainly The Ice Storm moreso than the others, but still. He has yet to play a character that is, for me, in any way memorable. He's forgettable to me, especially since I don't find him all that attractive (even if he had a nice body in spider man [which was more memorable than he was]).
