Doctors stress the woman will not look like her donor, but nor will she look like she did before the attack - instead she will have a "hybrid" face.

"She's out of your league".

"The transplant would have to come from a beating heart donor. So, say your sister was in intensive care, you would have to agree to allow their face to be removed before the ventilator was switched off.

"And there is the possibility that the donor would then carry on breathing."

Well that shouldn't be too hard, now.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

If that's Geddy Lee's wife, I pity the man.

Man, the doctors on "Nip/Tuck" just screwed this procedure up a couple of weeks ago. "But Christian, it's the kind of high-profile case that can get us back on track after all the bad publicity when you told the TV stations you were arrested for being the Carver when you knew it would just make the real Carver (who may or may not have raped you) take it out on the sexy bisexual detective you and your fiancee both boffed by slicing her face open!"

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Geddy Lee's wife is a Real Doll? Damn.

wow. Baldy there looks like a 2nd-stringer GI Joe guy, one who came later on when the series was in decline and they added William "Refrigerator" Perry & SFII characters.

The first time I looked at that I thought it was (the extremely litigous) P3t3 Burn5 standing next to Geddy.

Where donors would come from is one issue that would have to be considered.

"The transplant would have to come from a beating heart donor. So, say your sister was in intensive care, you would have to agree to allow their face to be removed before the ventilator was switched off.

"And there is the possibility that the donor would then carry on breathing."

...

My mom had a middle school student who tried to kill himself with a shotgun and blew his face off :(

Face transplants are great - it's representations of them that mess everything up. People once had (well, many still have) all these ethical dillemas with (other) organ transplant too. But we align identity with faces, not internal organs, so, yeah, that's where the problems enter. Popular science getting tossed around with media&capitalism makes for these realistic representations that aren't actually concerned with fact. What to do? And who to do it? Anyway, I find this endless fascinating.

I love Nip/Tuck and I love Face/Off but they are both insane with misrepresentation and drama is their driving force, not accuracy or education. Esp Face/Off! haha, so awesome - you can't change bone structure by laying tissue over it! (or. can. you??)

TS: Nose that looks like a slab of ham -vs- Face that looks like a canned ham. (aka "Buzz" .. or maybe that's "Nick" - I can't remember who's who.)
