Ha. That's a good one.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Thank you. *bows*

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

I like Moby Grape approximately 50% of the time.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

I've never seen that cover, but I like it. It reminds me of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

http://www.the-wood.org/Aeroplane.jpg

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

xpost Well, the record doesn't have to be good. Just the cover.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

jaymc... yes, totally!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

This chicory tea, I have to say, is really quite good. I was skeptical about its ability to substitute for coffee, flavor-wise, but I think it works. Better than chai or rooibos, at least.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting. I love chicory coffee.

I think our homebrew might be...molding. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

it has character now.

Think of all the great things that are moldy! Cheese! Penicillin! Um... that's all I got.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Mushrooms!

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

It's got this white stuff on top that, you know, MIGHT be toxic mold, or it might just be normal yeast byproduct. No idea.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, mushrooms aren't mold. They're fungus. That's not the same thing. Is it?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

It's probably natural. Like tempeh.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

I just read the wikipedia entry on tempeh. I had no idea.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

kelsey hahahaha

yeah, probably.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

"Especially vegetarians and vegans find the structure and protein content interesting."

http://www.tempeh.info/

Wow. How interesting. Protein. Maybe now I'll stop losing weight and start urinating again.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

I've always thought that the Arcade fire album ripped off Neutral Milk Hotel's aesthetic.

Sarah Kittensmew McLusky (coco), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

I find tempeh and its proteins interesting. Particularly in stir fries and sandwiches.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Reading about tempeh makes me want to eat a lot of it. I think it should have the opposite effect, especially since some pictures of the fermentation process are less appetizing, but whatever.
Kenan, dare I ask about the protein/urinating thing?

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

I've always thought that Neutral Milk Hotel was incredibly annoying. I may be the only one.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

I really like tempeh!

gbx (skowly), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

And, heads up guys, "Neutral Milk Hotel" is a really stupid fucking band name. Why didn't anyone tell them this? Don't they have friends?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

re: NMH
I never liked it/them?him? much. I sort of missed that whole thing. I never got into Modest Mouse either.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

I bought the first NMH album (On Avery Island) and didn't like it much, so I didn't bother at all with Aeroplane, despite that being the one that ended up with all of the accolades (Magnet named it best album of the 90s). I've heard it a couple of times since, because certain friends drool over it, but I've decided it's not really my thing.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

I meant to say Arcade Fire ripped off their album look, not sound, just so you know...

I liked NMH, but I'm all into bratty boy vocals. Also, I loved his lyrics.

Sarah Kittensmew McLusky (coco), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

So I'm not alone! Thank heavens!

I'm all into bratty boy vocals

Yeah, I like that aesthetic, too (see: Modest Mouse) but this dude needs to be punched in the nads.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

I love some NMH songs (Holland 1945, for example), and some of it is meh. My roommate, however, will maintain to the bitter end, that they are basically the Best Band of All Time. Not favoritest, but that Aeroplane is an Important Album of Considerable Consequence.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

http://neutralmilkhotel.net/promo2.jpg

Would these guys have any friends????

I love Neutral Milk Hotel, but I will probably never ever listen to their albums again. Time and place.

That one guy is my neck beard hero.

Jeff. (Jeff), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

The Cult of Jeff Mangum does turn me off a bit.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

an Important Album of Considerable Consequence.

That's a great album title.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

...for Dave Egger's solo debut.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

haha. that would be horrible.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Hey -- Golden Globes tonight. Don't forget. It's the awards show where everybody drinks!

http://www.hfpa.org/nominations/index.html

To look at those nominations, you'd think it was a crappy year for both film and TV, but actually it was a great year for both.

Still. Drunk actors. Have a wine and cheese party.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

What was it Jack Nicholson said a couple years ago?... "I've had a couple of valium..."

(Which is exactly what that thirteen year old girl said in his bedroom right before Roman Polanski did her in the butt.)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to get some lunch. But here's a Salon article worth sitting through the ad for. I promise.

http://www.salon.com/books/int/2006/01/14/stratton/

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

You can eat after writing that last sentence about Roman Polanski?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

I censored myself about Roman Polanski!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

And you still ended up with "...doing her in the butt?"

gbx (skowly), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

wow indeed.

Juulia (julesbdules), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'm tempted, but I will refrain from using prison sex metaphors.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

Haha.

I'm going to go home and make pizza.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Sarah, how does Nick like his new job? I envy those hours.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

If anyone wants to give me some feedback on the abstract I'm proposing to the pop-music conference in Seattle, you can e-mail me and I'll send it to you. It's only about 200 words, I just want to make sure it a) makes sense and b) sounds interesting.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I can give feedback.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

gbx, I don't think I have your e-mail...?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Is this the EMP conference? I'll read it. Do they accept academic papers if they're about music?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, and yes.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'll read it too.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

I just looked at the comps in the face, slapped it hard and killed it dead. I am a comps killa.

Tonight: my school friends and I are aiming to gather at the Hidden Cove around 8pm, so that's the deal. I may or may not sing 'Rhythm of the Night'.

gbx (skowly), Sunday, 29 January 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

woah, i drank.

Jeff. (Jeff), Sunday, 29 January 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

ME TOO

gbx (skowly), Sunday, 29 January 2006 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

I drank nothing. Except cola. I feel left out.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Sunday, 29 January 2006 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

Likelihood that I will be visiting Chicago at some point in, let's say, late February or early March: High.

If people are going on tour around then and I will miss them, let me know now! Because FFS I am all into meeting you lot.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 29 January 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Bubble.

Jeff. (Jeff), Sunday, 29 January 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Dan's band (good!) and some hardcore band (also good!).

gbx (skowly), Sunday, 29 January 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

I also saw Bubble and drank, in that order.

n/a (Nick A.), Sunday, 29 January 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

Mid 90s alternative rock revival.

Jeff. (Jeff), Sunday, 29 January 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. Jeff is referring to the jukebox selections at the bar we went to. LOTS of Pearl Jam. Rusted Root. I decided that in hindsight, Stone Temple Pilots were a better band than Pearl Jam.

Bubble was good, by the way. Very naturalistic acting/dialogue. Very short. High-quality digital photography, crisp with saturated colors. Cool doll factory footage. I even liked the Bob Pollard music, it was tasteful. Recommended.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 30 January 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

Should I get it on DVD tonight?

gbx (skowly), Monday, 30 January 2006 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

yes.

Jeff. (Jeff), Monday, 30 January 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

I had probably one of my top ten hangovers of all time today. Last night: Irish pub in downtown Mpls, with several pints of Finnegan's, then onward to a charming karaoke dive called the Otter. I sang Lindsay Lohan's "First" and drank unknown beer from pitchers. I also stole an abandoned pack of cigarettes from the table, and no one said anything when I lit up inside, despite the citywide ban. I chatted with Eric H., who's a really nice guy, and then my friend Meg drove me back to the hotel, where I proceeded to feel very dizzy and puked in the bathroom. Everything today -- mostly just driving home -- was done very gingerly.

If anyone has tried to call me today, I apologize: my cellphone died, and I still don't have my charger...

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

I trust everyone had a pleasant weekend? I sang 4 songs at the HC. 4!

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

I put away a bottle of wine on Friday night and watched "The Graduate", which I had somehow (???) missed before. Rest of wkend was quieter than expected, enlivened only by fixing flat bike tire Sunday morning and hiking to hardware store to buy a wrench when rear wheel loosened (how? I have no idea) and pulled out of drop-outs WHILE I was tootling to brunch. BAH.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 30 January 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

What songs did you sing, Amanda? Who else was there?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

I went to a party where we watched Commando and talked about mongooses, and then on Saturday ate Thai food and watched Maria Full of Grace and played video games until 3 am and all three nights drunk people were shouting stuff outside of Adrian's window, which makes me very glad that we are moving to a different complex in 4 months. This week I will be a nervous wreck as I wait for my Nursing School application to be accepted (I'm pretty confident) but now I have to see about (un) funding.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 30 January 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

I sang (in order)
1. "Still the Same" - Bob Seger
2. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" - duet with Jill, I harmonized! Not a hit with the patrons, but it was fun for us.
3. "Don't You Want Me" - Human League (a duet with myself, I sang both parts)
4. "Don't Go Breakin My Heart" - another duet with Jill, but sorta boring since it's the same words over and over.

She sang "Against All Odds" and it was great. Aside from the school friends, no one else showed up. There were about 5-6 of us, maybe? It was a good time. There will be a next time, for sure, when we find out that we passed. (I hope I passed!!)

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

That sounds like fun, Amanda.

I had a very good weekend! It ended with lounging around on the couch, eating black beans & rice and chips & salsa (my favorite meal pretty much) while watching weird Talking Heads videos.

Casu, We should be around then. We have an official meeting with our wee label Tuesday night, which will include discussing a release date. We plan to wait until the cd comes out to tour at all. But first we have to decide on some things like, uh, album art. By the way, has anyone ever told you that you look like a guy from the Talking Heads?

Sarah Kittensmew McLusky (coco), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

I was pretty much ill all weekend. I watched a lot of Six Feet Under which makes me feel all in my head & horny as hell. I don't know what it is about that show . . . perhaps all the sex & loss . . . that makes me want to have a lot of it myself.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Hey gang --

Friday night: Went to Critical Mass ride solo mio, put away 3 tall boys in the process and was totally housed by 8.30pm. Went to my friend's apartment for "Game Night," wasn't feeling it, went to Clipper to meet friend for exactly one beer and then went home and to bed.

Sat -- scouted the third stage of the Tour with buddies, did it wrong, and enjoyed the sights and sounds of Chicago's beautiful West Side. Biked in the rain down to Pilsen for Dan's loft party, went to Skylark, and went to bed at 3am. Funtimes!

Sun -- Woke up at 7.45, dragged ass up to the starting line, and rode in the Tour Da Chicago. It was really, really wet, and I was really pooped at the end. Went home and watched HBO for the rest of the day.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

(I just made the exact one-thousandth post on this thread. GIMME A PRIZE!)

gbx (skowly), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

You deserve a prize for getting up at 7:45 after going to bed at 3. I would not be able to do that.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

There's a radio opportunity in Shanghai that I'm qualified for . . . I think I'm going to apply for it.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Do it do it do it!!! How cool would THAT be?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

That's almost exactly what I was going to say!! Do it do it do it!

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

O Manda, I wish they burned a CD of you doing 'Still the Same - that's the best song about gambling ever.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

Meanwhile, on the home front, one housemate got the new Gossip CD for her birthday on Saturday night, and it is threatening to replace The Modern Lovers as the only CD needed in the living room for all occasions. I hope it holds up for a few more weeks.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

haha Eazy - I'm not sure my warbling should ever be immortalized on CD, but damn right I'll sing it again. There were only like 3 people in there at the time (aside from our group) and the guy was like "Are you sure this is the song you want?" I assured him that it was. Man, I love that place.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh MAN I heart the Modern Lovers.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

p.s. EZ: lunch is good any day this week.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

went to Skylark, and went to bed at 3am. Funtimes!

I was at Skylark on Thursday night with my bandmate Megan. I had four beers, which didn't bode well for driving, so I went back to Megan's place to sober up. Unfortunately, pretty soon after I got there, her boyfriend broke out the weeeeed -- which mostly just made me sleepy, and I crashed on their couch for the night. Then I drove home at 7:30 am to pack for the trip.

I slept in four different beds this weekend: Megan and Todd's couch on Thursday, Caitlin's couch in Minneapolis on Friday, the hotel on Saturday, and then my own again last night.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

Hey K., feeling spontaneous re: lunch?

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

I totally forgot to tell you guys: I found out that my professor from last semester, who I was not terribly fond of, is dating this guy:

Ah! I thought maybe that's who it was ... that's insane.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I guess he was in Chicago visiting her and one of my school friends is a TA, so she was there when my prof was introducing him to everyone and showing him off. Know how they met? She wrote him a fan letter.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Is that one of the Monkees?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Yes! She's a crazed Monkees superfan, apparently!

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

the fan letter shouldn't be under-rated. that's how ir4 gl4ss met his now wife.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

are you serious?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

That's like a secret admirer note actually working.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ir4 was a fan of An4h33d's restaurant reviews?
