... it's a toughie

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

Nick Griffin is worse because he wins seats and is the riskier person in the long run for equality in the UK.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry: "IMHO"

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

... it's a toughie

Yes, both such admirable men. Do you go for the bigotted psycho or... err, sorry, what was the choice again?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

... true but van Hoogstraten is just so relentlessly and unapologetically vile and repulsive (xpost)

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

Nicholas van Hoogstraten looks fantastic and has a name which is surely deserving of a Bond villain and so wins.

James Ward (jamesmichaelward), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

Stand one of them in front of the other so you only have to use one bullet ((c)morrissey 198-something)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

I'll give you that van Hoogstraten is physically less ugly than Griffin but then so is a toad squatting on a turd

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

But Griffin actually looks like a screen villian, or a silver age horror creature or summat.

Masked Gazza, Friday, 3 February 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

Hoogstraten's prob'ly had more people hurt. But he seems to be an equal opportunities psychopath, at least.

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

Griffin looks like he should work for Dr Frankenstein and mumble "You rang, master?"

James Ward (jamesmichaelward), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

Hoogstraten lives in a palace that almost gives Nuremburg a run for its money as far as gaudy displays of megalomania go.

I stopped at the gates once to eat my sandwiches on a bike ride and got chased off by several fat men with dogs and sticks.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

In van Hoogstraten's favour, as a man who has become enormously wealthy as a result of property development, then he is surely some sort of Modern British Hero - what could be more admirable in Britain in 2006 than a man who buys property in order to screw as much money as possible from his fellow citizens? Isn't that what we all aspire to these days?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

I BLAME MRS THATCH

Masked Gazza, Friday, 3 February 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

Dis is true, Dada. Teh van Hoog is a Thatcherite - therefore Blairite - hero, striding across dead consensus Maynard Keynes whine gum like some kind of Ayn Rand colossus god motherfucker. Whereas Griffin und his pals are kind of laffable 1930s throwbacks, lost in a world they don't understand.

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

I stopped at the gates of Downing Street once to eat my sandwiches on a bike ride and got chased off by several fat men with dogs and truncheons.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

How about Nick Griffin v Abu Hamza? i.e fascist with one dodgy eye bloke v fundamentalist nutcase with dodgy eye plus hook. What a pair of panto villains they are.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

I'd rather go for a drink with Abu Hamza than Nick Griffin.

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

"Do you go for the bigotted psycho or... err, sorry, what was the choice again?"

Hoogstraten (I'm told the Van is an affectation) is not a bigot — he hates everyone equally.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

And I imagine if I borrowed money from Abu he might be a wee bit more flexible on the repayment of it than Nicholas (xpost)

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

why these two?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:25 (nineteen years ago)

are they pals?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:25 (nineteen years ago)

They were both on the telly yesterday, they're both called Nick and they're both vile

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

I accidentally saw some of the Hoog last night on HardTalk, the hilariously named shit chat show on BBC24. It was quite good cos I was hoping he was going to lean across the desk and shank the cock of an interviewer.

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

Hoog was interviewed in one the Sunday supplements a couple of weeks back. Came across as oily and volatile.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

You would NOT want to spill his pint. Akshully, the more I think about it, the more I'm warming to him. He's a Kray bro for the noughties, innit?

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

Whereas I feel I could quite comfortably take Griffin, unless his DM'ed bodyguard intervened.

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

Man In The Iron: "I'd rather go for a drink with Abu Hamza than Nick Griffin."

I'd rather avoid the pair of them if possible.

Presumably Hamza steers clear of booze.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

NO SHIT SHERLOCK

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

NickB - you were lucky - it's blokes with guns now. I always find myself speeding up my walking pace when I go past which probably makes me look more shifty but those shooters make me nervous, guv...

Trying to find redeeming qualities in either of these fellows is difficult but an admirable idea I think. What hope for Hamas and Israel if we can't find something nice to say about these 2? I understand Van H is keen on recycling. And Nick G...? This is more difficult than it looks.

Ned T.RIfle II (Ned T.Rifle II), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

xpost Alright, alright. I was merely pointing out that a drink with Abu Hamza might not be the most riproaring occasion.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

Could have been an OJ?

Ned T.RIfle II (Ned T.Rifle II), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

Simpson?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

OJ'd be good to go for a drink with.

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

That point in the evening when you're both plastered enough to say "go on OJ, you did her really, didn't ya?"

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

And OJ does his Kenny Dalglish impression and goes, "Mibbes aye, mibbes naw"

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

And youse both roll about laffing.

Klassik.

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

sad to have missed NvH on "hard talk"

saw a prog w/ him on, a while ago. seemed like a rather sad character. doesn't think he's sad, himself, probably. his office in the back of a greek restaurant that he owns or something. reusing envelopes from junkmail for notes and stuff, no records of transactions, everything torn up, then shredded, after he has used it. teaching his son, by an exwife who is still in his life and maybe on the payroll in some capacity, how to make money -- don't spend any -- complaining abt the son using small, individually packaged servings of jam instead of out of a jar that would be so many times cheaper. his crazy, massive, unfinished, bad mansion. seemed v threatening and, no doubt, could get you seen to (as he seemed to suggest, to the film maker) but didn't seem to have any heavies around, really, and did all the boring work himself (inspecting vacated flats and stuff), to save money, I suppose

vile, no doubt, but more weird -- maybe the jimmy saville of property tycoon criminals

crosspost

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

Nicholas Van Hoogstraten is my new favourite murderer

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

If Griffin gets convicted in his retrial and Hamza gets convicted in his current one, could we get the Home Office to make them share a cell? Birds of a feather and all that.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

abu Hamza and Nick Griffin sharing a cell has excellent sitcom potential.

James Ward (jamesmichaelward), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

From what I've read about his trial, I'd be amazed if Hamza is convicted

Spookily enough, Griffin looks a little like Jack Smethurst.
