"I’m sorry, but Lost Boys is the only expert movie on vampires"

Found this statement buried in a blog comments page and marvelled at it. Anyway, we've made our Corey and Corey jokes (and thread), there's the looped clip of the oiled-up sax dude, but there's been no talk about the film itself, which might be Joel Schumacher's only watchable effort. But do you agree?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

Phone Booth is watchable. Not very good, but watchable.

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

The only expert movie on vampires is Fright Night. There, I said it.

this is my favorite movie, pretty much.

but they put garlic in the bathtub. and put holy water in SQUIRT GUNS! and j. patrick FLOATS OUTSIDE COREY HAIM'S WINDOW. AND COREY HAIM HAS ON A BORN TO SHOP SHIRT AND A POSTER OF A SHIRTLESS ROB LOWE ON HIS CLOSET DOOR! I don't know. I always get really excited when I watch this movie. Maybe it's because I first watched it at age SEVEN, and it seemed REALLY BADASS at the time.

Lost Boys vs. Monster Squad

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

LOST BOYS!! I watched Monster Squad recently and it was disappointing. Except for the part where Van Helsing gives a thumbs up from within the time warp or whatever.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

I've fallen asleep every time I've tried to watch this movie (which has been at least a dozen).

In all honesty you gotta rofl at the comment but Lost Boy is extremely entertaining. I absolutely love it but would never take it seriously.

Ned, what's the blog btw?

i just watched this for the first time. i like that it ends on a cheesy joke, as if the whole movie was a setup for the punch line.

omg "enquiring minds want to know" has been an integral part of my lexicon since 1988 because of that line!

this is a great fucking film on many levels. what's happening with the mooted all-girl sequel?

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 12:19 (eighteen years ago)

Corey Feldman can't find the right person to do his Brazilian wax.

omg "enquiring minds want to know" has been an integral part of my lexicon since 1988 because of that line!

same here. In fact, I'm pretty sure I used it in conversation last week, though I had forgotten from whence it came. Which in itself is shocking, because once upon a time I was able to recite most of the film's script from heart. Ahh classic moofie. Thanks for the memories Ned & Latebloomer.

Forgot My Pencil, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

you know while watching this i noticed an abundance of 60's/hippie-era references in this movie. also i find it striking that the film is
ultimately about resistance to peer pressure (vampirism=drugs, obviously).

is it possible this film is an oblique conservative commentary on the decades-long fallout from the permissive 60's counterculture and its supposed negative effects on reagan-era youth?

latebloomer, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

after all, it is wily old Grandpa, the seemingly crazy member of the Greatest generation, who saves the day in the end. are the filmmakers trying to tell us something?

latebloomer, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

I love how two of the biggest things that this film was trying to set up -- Jason Patric as a star and Charlie Sexton as a music star -- never got much more famous than this. (Patric's had one erratic career...)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

he was briefly mentioned for Dr. Manhattan in the upcoming watchmen flick but it's now gone to Billy Crudup, apparently.

latebloomer, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

no, Jason Patric was actually the center of a couple films for adults.

Does Lost Boys work better as an 80s horror-comedy or an 80s teen movie?

Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Thursday, 27 September 2012 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

I would say it's more of a teen movie, I am very easily frightened by horror movies but I can't think of a moment that was truly scary.

I probably watched this 20 times on cable when it first came out, I wonder how badly it has aged.

somebody in the terrible ideas thread had this brilliant idea for a robot lost boys adaptation or something? where like there are sentient androids trying to destroy humanity, but the vampires need humanity for snacks, so it was this secret war of our oldest predator vs. our newest existential threat and it sounded great, honestly
