why do people pull the race card or cite racism for no reason?

eg - this thread here:
chingford, essex - C or D?
someone is insisting that chingford in london, an area where i used to work as an estate agent, is racist. it boggles my mind that people continue to use race as an excuse/explanation for everything in life that goes wrong, or rather, say racism is the reason for certain things when in fact, it often isnt. its all too easy to say something is due to racism when it might in fact more likely be down to other factors.

For the same reason that people pull the class card or cite classism "for no reason".

OK, Chingford itself could never be racist, but many of its residents are white-flighters from the East End who moved from their original neighbourhoods because they felt encroached upon in the expansion of the Bangladeshi population after 1971. Also, right around that time council housing went onto a need-based allocation instead of families putting down their kids' names as in the past, so councils could not allocate to them if other applicants were even needier. They do still bear a bit of a grudge and complain how they don't like going back to the East End.

I just read this new book by Kate Gavron and Michael Young about race, class and the East End and it was really good.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Have they got any Bangladeshi people in Eastenders yet?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps it is because thinking clearly about the nature of the world and society, and your place in them, is a difficult proposition, subject to frequent misunderstandings, rationalizations and a host of other mental contaminants that tend to create countless disagreements over what is true and why.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

xpost No, but they haven't got any YBAs either, nor Turks considering it's based on Albion Square E8 by Ridley Road.

Are 'you people' still using cards for this? How barbarically 20th Century of you.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Ali Ozcabs was Turkish though wasn't he? Reppin' da 80s. Presumably Eastenders still operates on the basis as most of their viewers are British-born Caucasian, most of the people in it should be too.

Andrew, no one on that thread used racism as an "excuse" for anything that "goes wrong." Nobody said it was the "cause" of anything. All that happened was that someone said a place was "full of racists and neo-fascists." That's just kind of an assessment. And "full of" is a pretty vague term, which seems to have been used here to mean "annoyingly many," or something.

I think getting bent out of shape any time racism gets mentioned pretty much amounts to pretending it doesn't exist.
