Tell me about Hornsey

I'm moving to Hornsey, London N8 next weekend.

First impression - it's a strange place on the cusp of Crouch End and Turnpike Lane.

Any Hornsey facts gratefully received.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 27 February 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Hopefully you will have a great view of Ally Pally from your house/flat.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 27 February 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Not sure, but i think I'll have a great view of the back-to-back terraced house behind ours.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 27 February 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

First impression - it's a strange place on the cusp of Crouch End and Turnpike Lane.

More like on the cusp of Crouch End and Muswell Hill, but not quite as nice as either of them. Turnpike Lane's a whole different kettle of fish - when you go under the railway bridge you enter a different world.

hi dere waht is it made

i like that old apartment building you see from the train. somehow hornsey always seems a bit windswept and lonely, but i kind of like it

terry lennox. (gareth), Monday, 27 February 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

i think its because its sloping away from the centre. its oriented outwards, the same way when you get to the top of highate and its suddenly looking towards finchley, not central london

terry lennox. (gareth), Monday, 27 February 2006 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the link Terry.

TS: The Three Compasses v The Great Northern Railway Tavern

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 27 February 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

terry otm. there is an iris murdoch quote about this.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 09:10 (twenty years ago)

I used to live there, it's OK. The Great Northern Railway Tavern is norra bad pub, apres an Old Firm game of a Sat'day afternoon.

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:08 (twenty years ago)

great art college!

(in crouch end)

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm a Three Compasses man these days, as the beer is great in there and we always (ie 50% of the time) win the quiz. Good selection of restaurants too, I fancy a couple of the Jamaican shacks. A wee but inaccessible, but I wouldn't say no in my old age.

The Art College (hotbed of 60's political activity), wot became the TUC education centre seems a bit empty at the mo', but that's more a Crouch End story really.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:36 (twenty years ago)

i really liked living there. i like the way its sort of nothing, theres not really anything defining about it. stroud green road i guess is the most definite place as it were, with that dairy pub and the turkish place gareth didnt like (its closed down now). yelsim supermarket is really good and theres a nice italian deli on hornsey road by our old bus stop. you can walk to holloway road, finsbury park, crouch end, archway so its got north london sorted. the train from crouch hill goes to dalston kingsland (does it?!?!). the 393 gets you to stoke newington. the 214 gets to hampstead heath. the 91 is a gem of a bus. all in all i think its pretty good, but it aint where the action is guess.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:45 (twenty years ago)

where IS the action?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:47 (twenty years ago)

That's not Hornsey, that's Stroud Green. Hornsey is the stuff round Priory Road and Tottenham Lane. (xpost)

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Hobb, ambrose's description was kind of the other end of Hornsey, but appreciated none the less.

Pete, what sort of quiz goes down at the 3 Compasses?

The one time I've been to the GNR Tavern, it was fairly lively even on a Sunday late morning. Friendly locals all seemed to know each other; real log fire; nice olde worlde decor; smiling Thai chefs bantering with the punters; slight edge of roughness.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Gen knowledge, five rounds and a pic quiz, winning prize about £30 (no runners up mind). The Compasses also does quite nice food and have very friendly barstaff. Not been there for sport or owt, but the GNR Tav is nice too. Hornsey has better pubs than Crouch End.

I love the way Hornsey Road and Hornsey Lane (where I live) are actually in Hornsey. Throws a lot of people but like I say, Oxford Street ain't in Oxford is it?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 11:44 (twenty years ago)

errr, pete, i think naming roads like that means 'goes to oxford', or 'goes to hornsey'. hence 'archway road', 'holloway road'...

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 11:48 (twenty years ago)

But neither Hornsey Road or Hornsey Lane go to Hornsey!

York Way anyone?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 11:58 (twenty years ago)

Err York Way takes you to Kings Cross, where you can get a train to York.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Busted!

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but what about Japan Crescent in Stroud Green, ahahaha !

darren (darren), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 12:57 (twenty years ago)

david sylvian was born there.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, I feel a thread coming on.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 13:23 (twenty years ago)

I love the way Hornsey Road and Hornsey Lane (where I live) are actually in Hornsey. Throws a lot of people but like I say, Oxford Street ain't in Oxford is it?

Do you mean they're NOT in Hornsey (which is true) or that they ARE in Hornsey (which is false)?

Teh HoBB at work, Tuesday, 28 February 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

i think ambrose is mistaking hornsey rise, for hornsey, not stroud green for hornsey

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 14:05 (twenty years ago)

what doesn't go to hornsey, stays in hornsey

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 14:24 (twenty years ago)

i think ambrose is mistaking hornsey rise, for hornsey, not stroud green for hornsey

I think you're right, and that Pete's suspected typo has compounded the confusion.

Teh HoBB at work, Tuesday, 28 February 2006 14:27 (twenty years ago)

well i dont live in london and therefore claim the right to misname any part of london as i see fit. i live nr hornsey road, so maybe ill just call it hornsey road. it aint stroud green road i dont reckon, i certinaly never called it that sort of area. its limbo i guess, which is why i liked it.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 17:10 (twenty years ago)

I have held back for so long, but every time I see this thread, I get "I am Hornsey, hornsey hornsey hornsey..." stuck in my head.

Cuair Crithlonracha (kate), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Sooooo Hornsey, hornsey, hornsey....

(xpost): It's limbo, no man's land, yes, but nowhere near Hornsey. Hornsey Road is kind of Holloway, kind of Stroud Green. Then at the top it changes its name to Hornsey Rise, which is kind of nowhere in particular. This joins onto Hornsey Lane which is kind of Highgate, kind of Archway / Upper Holloway. But none of them are in Hornsey, they just lead to Crouch End and Hornsey is on the other side of that.

Teh HoBB about to leave work, Tuesday, 28 February 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Fantastic bass player.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

We are moving out of Hornsey in 2 weeks time to Crystal Palace. We found that we hardly use any of Hornsey's local shops, but either walked into Crouch End or over to Turnpike Lane. It's nice being very close to the Hornsey Rail Station which goes straight into Moorgate and close to Turnpike Lane without being in Turnpike Lane.

marianna (mariannapm), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Turnpike Lane gets a bad rep. It's only a lane! And there's always the Cyprus Potato Marketing Board HQ.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

was there actually a turnpike at turnpike lane?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 21:13 (twenty years ago)

i mean.. has turnpike lane really been a turnpike

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
yes it has

bob's butchers, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Turnpike Lane is great; hustle, bustle, foods from everywhere, pubs, late night shopping, you name it!!

bob the butcher, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 12:11 (twenty years ago)

was green lanes ever actually green?

i'm going to have to take a photo of this shop when i'm there next monday.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 12:12 (twenty years ago)

take a picture of ROFLE jewellers on Green Lanes too.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 12:43 (twenty years ago)

i like the tube stop: http://static.flickr.com/52/109817849_bdb5b95b17_m.jpg

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Steve, and the buildings behind, housing shops and the bus station, are curvy like the building on the right in your photo.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I hate the bus station because I once waited 50 minutes there for a 123 just to go to Walthamstow, then gave up and went home.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:32 (twenty years ago)

steve that's the shop i meant :)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:37 (twenty years ago)

ah good (sorry for 'spoiling' it then)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

was green lanes ever actually green?

Was Ferme Park ever actually ... um ... closed?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I started a thread on this theme a couple of weeks back:

streets with inappropriate names

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I believe a pikey was originally someone to be found hanging around a turnpike. Not that this has any relevance to Turnpike Lane in the early 21st century.

bham, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Oi, cheeky!!

bob the butcher, Friday, 17 March 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Happy St. Patrick's Day
