Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Whee!

I tried to send folks my phone number in case there are last minute dinner plan changes, but now my mail is acting up. So call me if you didn't get my phone number. If you know what I mean.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone want to see GZA and DJ Muggs Wednesday? I know this is prob a random-ass question for this thread but I thought I'd give it a shot. Also Jeff Chang is giving a talk about his book tomorrow i think.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

one of the people on this thread has a show that night as well.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

[hint: it's the same man who laughed when i told him that last night, a soccer ball was kicked into my neck]

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

can we do ez's album next for the chicago thread?

Chicago: You're Talking to the Wrong Guy

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

I'm also the only person on this thread that deej has spent a significant amount of time with (he's met Nick, Sarah, and Eric briefly).

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

What is this mysterious black album cover atop this thread?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

Spnl Tp

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 February 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

so how do i know when it's time to switch to a new chicago thread? is there an expiration period for threads?

jesseOooooooo, Monday, 27 February 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

Usually when there are more than 1000 posts, it seems appropriate. But I feel weird about starting a new one so soon after the old one, so I don't mind letting it go up to 2000 posts sometimes. It's usually at Kenan's discretion, anyway. I've only started two or three, I think.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Let me guess, John has never seen Sp|nal T@p.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

I've seen it. I didn't much like it. Which is funny, because Waiting for Guffman is like my favorite movie ever. But making fun of the excesses of over-the-top stadium-rock acts didn't strike me as all that original or amusing.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

Like as in, they're already cartoons.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

ts: GZA vs Jaymc

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

in '95 it would be GZA in a walk.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

Jaymc on this day in 1995

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

You're right, GZA wins.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

what's GZA?

jesseOooooooo, Monday, 27 February 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

I was tempted to start a 'Chicago: World Clique' thread over the weekend.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, you totally should have. I was only reminded of the length of the other thread this morning when I visited it without logging in first, and it took 5 minutes to load.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Me too! I took a look in the airport on Maddie's laptop, but said screw it after it took a minute for the first 1000 posts to load.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Btw, Red Eye = stupid ass movie.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

Like as in, they're already cartoons.

Well, yeah, but I think the movie still works so well because after a point, it's more about its characters than about satirizing anything in particular (like Guffman, I suppose). And it has some of the funniest dialogue anywhere. "He choked to death on vomit... but not his own vomit."

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

what's GZA?

One of the Wu-Tang. AKA The Genuis, Ghostface (right?) Cousin to RZA, IIRC.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Jay, I saw "Spinal Tap" once, too, and didn't find it all that funny, for pretty much the same reason. Maybe it gets better in repeated viewings, iike "Last Days of Disco"?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, GZA is not the same person as Ghostface.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

SHIT

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I spelled Genius wrong. I should leave the hipping and hopping to the people who know what they're talking about.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Last Days of Disco is pretty good. Is that really what it's like working in the NYC book industry, Laurel?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Not in the slightest.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

So, now Indian food is ON?

I hope Nick feels well enough to go, because that sounds yum to me. OTOH, he generally dislikes Indian food.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

B-b-but he lived in India!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Or maybe that's a classic "despite the fact, or perhaps because of it" thing for him.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

uh huh But I've played a part in making him become more tolerant of Indian food, so maybe..

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

I could go for some Indian food. For some reason I never like it as much as takeout, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

(not that it stops me from getting Indian takeout, of course)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

I love spicy food therefore indian = best food ever to me. Devon ave and western = my idea of (eating) heaven, except for the whole far-north-west-side-not-being-near-the-el thing.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

I can't remember the name of the Vietnamese place that Jeff mentioned in the old thread, but if it was Hai Yen I went there the other night and it was bad ass. Ironically, right below their veg menu is "7 Courses of Beef" and the vastly inferior "5 Courses of Beef."

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't been there but I was just talking about it this weekend! Did you the the 7-spot? Looks tasty.

Jeff. (Jeff), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

So, 7pm? Where?

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

That place on Lincoln is good! We order there from work sometimes

gbx (skowly), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

No, I got the Red Snapper (very tasty.) My housemate had gotten the 7 courses before, and said it was insane... Brought out by a procession of waiters all at once, he didn't know where to start!

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

We also got parts of the 7 courses as appetizers and they were very very good. Vietnamese is my new favorite.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

I'm definitely going there this week sometime.

Jeff. (Jeff), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

I'm also itching for more german:

http://www.eatchicago.net/archives/000103.html

Jeff. (Jeff), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

This pro-Guffman, anti-Tap madness is madness.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

I quote Guffman at least a couple times a week.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

So who is Indianing? Jenny, Jesse, Chris P?

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, can you come?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently they made a movie about him that I've never heard of, despite it starring Tom Hanks. It probably won a few Oscars as well.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:37 (nineteen years ago)

It was called Terminal, and it sucked too.

unclejessjess, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

I like Deerhoof.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

bunny bunny bunny bunny bunny

pan-da pan-dapan-da pan-da pan panda

This is all I can really remember of Deerhoof. They were okay.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Someone lent me a Deerhoof CD once, and then I gave it back, and then they claimed I lost it. Or maybe I did lose it. I don't remember losing it, though, and I have never seen it again.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

I just got Ethiopiques 8 - "Swinging Addis" and BOY! Woo! Some white-hot shit right there. I almost got my dancing fingers out on the train.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Terminal in a hotel room a few months ago. It was sucky, yeah, but it did feature Benny Golson as the macguffin, which warmed my heart.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

All of those Ethiopique discs are great. I think 7 is my favorite, or at least the one I've listened to the most, but 8 is also kick-rump.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

I saw it in the theatre. In the fucking theatre. I went alone. To a theatre.

unclejessjess, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

I saw that horrible horrible horrible Tom Hanks movie too. He comes from an imaginary country. That's all you need to know -- it's one step from Mypos.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

OK, here is what I thought of Crash, copied and pasted from my review elsewhere:

I just don't know where to begin, and I'm afraid to begin because I might never stop.

My biggest beef: The movie was set in what was apparently some parallel-universe LA where characters' lives were a non-stop series of events relating to race race race. This might actually have worked had the film makers not tried to make it realistic at the same time, but had chosen to go for a fantastical or magically-realistic premise. Had that been the case then it would have made sense that every character lives a day-to-day life that involves incidents, conversations, crimes, retaliations, car crashes etc all revolving around race.

Also, SPOILER ALERT, why did the police not come to arrest the Persian owner who shot the little girl while trying to shoot her dad, the locksmith? Is it because the cops were all busy fingering black women and burning cars in which they shot black men?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

I distinctly heard you say "jew"!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

I should stop reading about/commenting on that rape case, since it's making me really really really really really really really really really angry.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Jew?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Flightplan was pretty good though. Jodie Foster (played by Michael Jackson, it seems) plays a mother who is flying with her husband's body from Berlin to NYC on a jumbo jet on which she worked as the propulsion engineer. Mid-flight her daughter disappears--from the airplane, from the flight manifest and from existence ITSELF!! The beginning is a nice drama-thriller setup for a good action-movie ending.

Funfacts! Several times the actors mumble their lines and it sounds very clearly like other words. When the bad guy says "I'm going to cuff you" Jodie Foster seems to reply, "Why Julia Roberts cuff me?" When the lights fail and oxygen masks drop down one of the flight attendants calls out, "You're all pregnant!"

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh. That reminds me of Red Eye, which I ended up seeing because my girlfriend was in love with Cilli@n Murphy. Terrible, terrible movie.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

I laughed really hard through many parts of Crash.

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

We watched Red Eye a couple weeks ago because of Cilian's pretty blue eyes. Silly-ass movie (those homeland security officers sure were heroic, though!).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Crash didn't have magic realism, but with that kind of god's-eye tapestry view it felt a little heightened and fantastic - as with Magnolia and Syriana, there's the sense of the storyteller's voice in all of the multiple threads that gives me some suspension of disbelief. The opening scenes felt so singly about race that it seemed a little Ludacris - but I got pulled into the storytelling soon enough and took it on its own terms and got caught up in it.

I thought Terrence Howard and Matt Dillon were both great. Interesting how the father-son storyline is so similar to the one in Syriana.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

28 Days was good though. That was a zombie movie I could get into. xpost

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

I like Deerhoof. I also like Rachel McAdams. I enjoyed Red Eye well enough, though I'd already seen the best parts in the Scream movies.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

Deerhoof-likers, what's the best one?

28 Days Later rulz. We watched Day of the Dead the other night and it really hit home how much the second act of 28DL owes to it.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

Now I have purchased my ticket home.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Or Twilight Zone
http://www.rodserling.com/theystartedontz/0220K.jpg

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

Shatner?

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

I also liked 28 days later.
Wait, was that the artsy one where the zombies could run? Because that's the one I'm talking about. Oh yeah, the one with Cillian.
I thought he was funny in Red Eye.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

William Shatner was in several TZ episodes. Like the one with the fortune telling thingie in the diner? That one's great.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

Magnolia was satisfying because it was fantastical. Rather than skillfully playing the line, Crash seemed to want to have its feet firmly planted on both sides--realism and pure imagination.

Also, Object Lesson from Crash:

Every race is jerky--White, Black, Persian--every race except Latinos who are hard-working, reasonable, helpful, family-oriented, loyal and friendly.

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

Oh,I forgot about Asians, too

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

Also, Latinos are hot.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Chris.

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

Crash: Worst movie ever, or worst film ever?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

Are you going to be in contact while on your trip, Chris?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently I have cell coverage in random places in Montana, but less so in random places in North Dakota.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

Chris, I'm going to be in town this weekend, so just stay for a few more days, k?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

I was able to do my now-traditional calling of friends to announce to them that I was in Minot, though! But I think on the way back the Minot stop might be at an awkward hour.

Jordan, I would but I have a show on Saturday and a cat that thinks I've abandoned her and I am tired of sleeping on a sliver of my ex's bed. But I am sure I'll be back and I would love to visit Madison.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

sorry i didn't get to meet ya!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

Me too.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

Also this is where I extend a hearty invitation for everyone to visit me in Portland. I have a futon you can crash on and I will bake for you.

Also this is where I thank everyone I met for meeting me and say that I had a lot of fun and think you are all Quality People. And I am sorry that I didn't quite get to meet some of you. I'm sure I'll be back at some point, though, possibly in the summer.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

New thread title -- "Chicago: Quality People"

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

It was good to meet you, Chris. Thanks for crashing that weird party with us!

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

This is where I insert a montage of all the fun times we had.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

"We'll meet again / Don't know where, don't know when..."

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

We really do need a new thread, though. I was on last night without logging in and, whew.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

Got it, sire.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Thank you. I'm fresh out of fun.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Amateur tagger alert.

New thread.

Chicago: Ordinary People

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh ooh! I posted the link as a link and it converted it to the thread title - nifty.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Is "Quality People" a running joke?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)
