Future of the word fag? (and "gay" too)

Hi. First time caller, long time listener (my first question!)

What do you think? Is the word fag destined to become a non-specific insult? What about gay as in, "That tour of the brewery sucked; it was totally gay"?

I'm gay, but I will use these terms. Are the connections between these put-downs and homosexuality are falling away?

It's all very easy for you English speaking people, but for foreigners it can be quite confusing sometimes. We ask ourselves if you're talking about some merry person using tobacco to roll a cigarette if the words gay, shag and fag are used in one sentence.

"faggoty" . . . is "faggoty" okay? people i know use that more than "gay," and it seems to me pretty pointedly negative regarding homosexuals. not being one myself though i don't know if it's offensive or not.
