Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have a boy, call it 'Moses'

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have added to their family. Their second child, a son named Moses Martin, was born this weekend, the actress's rep tells PEOPLE.

The Shakespeare in Love Oscar winner, 33, and her British-born Coldplay frontman husband, 29, already have a daughter, Apple, born May 14, 2004. Moses is the name of a song Martin wrote for his wife in 2003.

Following months of speculation that she was pregnant, in January Paltrow confirmed that she and Martin were expecting. After a Screen Actors Guild screening of Paltrow's movie Proof, Lou Diamond Philips, about to moderate a panel on the film, introduced Paltrow as "a pregnant woman" and then asked her, "How far along are you?"

"Far enough along to feel very cumbersome," Paltrow answered.

When a member of the audience asked her how she got her hair so shiny, Paltrow replied, according to TV's The Insider: "It must be the prenatal vitamins ... I've been taking them for a few years."

CREDIT: STEVE SANDS / BAUER-GRIFFINThree months after the birth of daughter Apple, the new mother appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and admitted she couldn't understand why people were making such a fuss over the baby's name, which, in its entirety, is Apple Blythe Alison Martin.

Paltrow said that her husband suggested the name soon after she discovered she was pregnant. "It conjured such a lovely picture for me – you know, apples are so sweet and they're wholesome and it's biblical – and I just thought it sounded so lovely and ... clean," Paltrow told Winfrey. "And I just thought, 'Perfect!'"

"We love unusual names in the family," Paltrow's mom, Blythe Danner, told PEOPLE in January.

As for being a mom, Paltrow told Winfrey that the overwhelming love she feels for her child is "a whole new dimension in emotion that I've never experienced. It's crazy."

Definitely crazy: http://people.aol.com/people/articles/0,19736,1175007,00.html

I like that one of her justifications for "Apple" is that "it's biblical". Uh...huh. I mean, sorta. Except not usually in a good way, and anyway it probably wasn't an apple, really. Something just doesn't add up....

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

i dont know. its pretty cool for a girl to be the ultimate temptation.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

I feel sorry for that kid, Apple. She looks nothing like beautiful Gwyneth and instead has that grodey Chris Martin's mug.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

No, I reckon it was a banana, much more suggestive.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

It would be cool if the baby were named after Moses Malone.

My Psychic Friends Are Strangely Silent (Ex Leon), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

One of my friends works at a daycare where Gwyneth brings Apple in daily. She says the kid is butt ugly.

darin (darin), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

No, logically it doesn't work. If you're a kind of person who GIVES a shit whether something is biblical or not, you'd be too scandalized to name a child after the occasion of Original Sin. If you're NOT that kind of person, why mention it at all?? I'm almost positive I'm thinking about this too much.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

maybe. or you could be the kind of person who loves religious imagery but isnt religious (my sister and i are like this).

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

She says the kid is butt ugly.

The kid looks like Chris Martin?

My Psychic Friends Are Strangely Silent (Ex Leon), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

I assumed they just liked apples. Though I like doughnuts, yet I wouldn't name my kids after them. I think maybe they are just trying to be kooky.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

I really like Olives. I think I'll name my child Olive.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm naming my child Fajita.

My Psychic Friends Are Strangely Silent (Ex Leon), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Here is my speculation on the "biblical" matter, FWIW.

Gwynneth lives in a sparkly world of wonderfulness, where all good things are abundant. She samples all these things for just as long as she pleases and then hops, bunnylike, to the next sensation. She is bright, but has no reason to fasten her brightness to any subjcet or object, therefore her brain is active and eager, but shallow.

She clearly perceives her brightness and the wonderfullness of herself, but has not got the first freaking clue how shallow she is. Therefore, her attachement to the "biblical" nature of the name Apple is more a gesture at a thought than a ripened or complete thought. She takes up ideas the way a child picks up a toy in a room crowded with toys. It occupies her thoughts only for a short moment before she drops it for another.

As she likely has said more than once, "It's all good."

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

yes, you are really getting to the core of the matter

I think we owe Gwyneth an apology:

Deuteronomy 32:10: 'He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.'

Zechariah 2:8: 'For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.'

Nemo (JND), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

rich = shallow and stupid theory

An oversimplification of my theory. Far from being stupid, I think she's likely very bright and I said as much already. This has more to do with being raised in an atmosphere of privilege and comfort, then rapidly attaining wealth and fame, when still young, in a pursuit that does not require great intellectual attainments.

I'm pretty sure that if you sat down with Ms. Paltrow and had a long shop-talk about the craft of screen acting, that she would grasp this subject with considerable precision and in detail. Her ideas there would be well-developed and interesting. But outside that specialized area, her experience of the world has been necessarily sheltered from the start. She has never had any reason to develop her other ideas in depth, because they are not called forth by any external necessity.

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

(and not of course from a need to feel somehow superior to rich attractive celebrities)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe she's just a hippie and wants her kids to be free thinkers.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

[shrug] I suppose that's a theory, too. Except I don't really believe I'm superior to her. We just live in very different circumstances and we have made different choices from among different options.

She does show some of the telltale signs of giddiness that would tend to bolster my theory - but I don't know enough about her know if it is true.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

x(x6?)-post
I stand corrected on the 'stupid' part. I just dont know why poor/middle class people are deeper than rich people. Just because you can buy a bunch of shit and you'll never have to worry about the rent doesnt mean you never talk to other people or have experiences outside the mansion gates. Believe me, pawning your stuff to buy food doesn't make you a better person. Just an angrier one.
Wow. How poignant of me.

Anyway, I always thought it would be a smart move to give your kid an unusual name. From what I remember of school, the kids with the unusual names were always regarded as unique and much more interesting than the cathys or joannas or davids and , yeah, katharines. Of course, unusual back then was like 'zoe'.

I like Apple. Its all fresh and clean. Moses? eh.
