Mingus Realty (noodle vague), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Is that the one credited to John Cameron Mitchell?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Not much. S Coppola and A Kaurismaki perhaps.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Ceylan's film's running time hovers around the 90 minute mark. Interesting.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:49 (twenty years ago)

i'm not actually going, so i don't feel that excited about it.

25 yr old slacker cokehead (Enrique), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Actually, you're right. On top of that, I won't even see more than a couple of these films anyway, so I admit to having started this thread out of habit more than anything.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm rooting for Southland Tales, cuz Darko was fine even if its cult is undeserved.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

dumont! looks interesting.

Johnnie To - Election 2

cool!

Abderrahmane Sissako - Bamako

I saw his last film Heremakono (En attendant le bonheur/Waiting for Happiness), it was very very good. what are the odds there will be a screening of this in the US anywhere.. not good :(

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'd like to know if Kelly can beat the sophmore slump. Also interested in whatever the Korean have to offer, which seems to be Yoon Jong-bin's Unforgiven.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 20 April 2006 14:27 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
i'm quite interested in loach's entry.

the confusing situation Enrique currently endures (Enrique), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 09:46 (twenty years ago)

Hi everyone--instead of starting a new lame thread, I will post my lame question here.

I am in Paris for the time being and don't know how long I will be here for beyond the end of the year. A family friend in Cannes can get me a ticket or two with some connections, which seems like an opportunity not to be missed. In addition to some poor timing, however, the price is exorbitant just to GET THERE by train! Basically unless I quit my job I will be paying around 200 euros at least, which is a good chunk of my budget. More to the point of this thread, though, the reason I'm considering it is I'm really excited about these entries:

Both the Linklaters - A Scanner Darkly and Fast Food Nation
Coppola's Marie Antoinette
Clerks 2 and Election 2
Oliver Stone's Entry
They're showing the Daft Punk movie!!
And of course there will be lots of other stuff...

Advice if you have it, or entries that are less obvious and more interesting than mine.

richardk (Richard K), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 11:10 (twenty years ago)

well, i'm guessing that some of those films will get a wider release. you could hitchhike.

the confusing situation Enrique currently endures (Enrique), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Who goes to Cannes to see "Clerks 2"?!

pleased to mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 11:32 (twenty years ago)

There's an Election 2 coming out? A sequel to the Alexander Payne (w. Broderick and Witherspoon) one? Can't find any info about this on imdb.com.

Gerard (Gerard), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:58 (twenty years ago)

is stone's film actually called entry?

the confusing situation Enrique currently endures (Enrique), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:59 (twenty years ago)

payne is surely too schmindie to do a sequel?

xp

the confusing situation Enrique currently endures (Enrique), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I think that's a sequel to a different Election (Johnnie To's?).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah they will all get wide release, of course, so it's more for the spectacle, atmosphere etc etc. mitya OTM wrt Clerks, I'm not actively excited about anything lesser known even though I know I would enjoy most of it.

I was confused about the Election thing also, but I'd see it either way.

I anyone here actually at the festival? My boss is, but I am far from excited by it. It's a bit of a pain to be honest.

Crimea River (Mark C), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I saw Wristcutters and it started real strong, then got real real lame.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Although any movie that features a flying Tom Waits has something going for it.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:47 (twenty years ago)

psyched about the almodovar

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

richard i wouldn't shell out tons of cash to see movies that'll be in theatres later this year anyway

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, not going. Quite content with TV coverage and getting drunk with friends while mocking da vinci code instead.

richardk (Richard K), Monday, 22 May 2006 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Ken Loach has won!

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 28 May 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 28 May 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

Man, was it really as far back as Dancer in the Dark that something truly (formally) loopy has won? Well, maybe Michael Moore is up there, but... yeah. (Then again, just glancing through the 1980s Palmes d'Or makes my eyes glaze over, so I guess this is nothing new.)

That said, I admit I'd probably rather see the Loach than most of the others I've read about. I would've been a lot more excited about Dumont's second Grand Prix this time last week.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 28 May 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

Why, have you heard bad things about the Dumont? Im glad Almodovar didn't win this but i can't get too excited about the Loach even though i loved his last historical film.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

..."Land and Freedom"

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, thta was great.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

Why, have you heard bad things about the Dumont?

No: Twentynine Palms: has anybody seen this? wtf?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 28 May 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

The Almodovar is quite good in an Almodovar way. It goes in all directions, any other director would've managed to make at least 3 movies with all the ideas in the scenario. There are lots of times when I found it annoying that he didn't make the most of his ideas.

Glad Marie Antoinette didn't win, that movie is a mess. The trailer got me all excited and when I finally saw the movie I was very disappointed. It is too fucking god damn slow and you can only see that much of Kirsten Dunst munching on fluorescent cakes, trying new shoes, dresses and hair styles. One or two scenes were rather amazing though, like a ball scene in Paris that feels like they went in a night club.

Ken Loach winning the Palme d'Or is rather surprising, as the press it got wasn't that great. Well, I guess I'll just have to wait for it to come out so as to maje up my mind about it.

Jibé (Jibé), Sunday, 28 May 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

marie antoinette sounds like a movie-length version of those "trying on clothes in a fancy boutique" musical montage sequences (cf pretty woman, every modern romcom ever)

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 28 May 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

Amadeus has one of those sequences as well.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 28 May 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

Not trying them in a fancy boutique, but in Versailles. They may be the same to you, but 60 million Frenchmen are sure to disagree with you ! (And they're bound to tell you that 60 million Frenchmen can't be wrong).

Jibé (Jibé), Monday, 29 May 2006 07:37 (nineteen years ago)

You only have to post that one 58,999,998 more times now.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 29 May 2006 08:40 (nineteen years ago)

Ken Loach is a surprising winner,(most thought the prize will go to Almodovar - the same thing happened to him when David Cronnenberg gave the prize to the darden bros. for Rozetta in 1999 instead of "all about mother", or to Alejandro González for Babel, that from what ive heard is an ok movie but less good than his precious movies, cause its pretentious).
On the other hand, Loach is resonable winner: he never won before, and he deserves the prize for everything he done, maybe that was the though behind.cause the movie he made for the content is not one of his best.

emekars (emekars), Monday, 29 May 2006 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

...plus, according to the critics, Cannes '06 was very weak, with little highlights (Almodover and Dumont are probably the best)

emekars (emekars), Monday, 29 May 2006 08:54 (nineteen years ago)

yes, i know that it takes place in versailles and not a fancy boutique.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 May 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

what's the diff?

The Ugly Americanateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

phooey, sir!

loach's ireland = iraq thing is retarded.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 08:09 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with you though slocki, as the diff between Versailles and a fancy boutique isn't that great, like amateurist says.

Enrique, I kid you not, once I'd seen her do that for an hour, I was shouting (at least in my mind) "Off with her head". Maybe I really sould've said that aloud in the cinema, if only to see what the other people felt about the movie. All that may have something to do with the fact that Kirsten Dunst doesn't rate very high in my book though.

Jibé (Jibé), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

snakes on a plane != iraq thing?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

it's a metaphor.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 08:50 (nineteen years ago)

After enduring TwentyninePalms at the Toronto fest (w/ an audience that booed the shit out of it), I don't know what it would take for me to try more of Dumont's silly crap.

Looking over the contenders in the Saturday Times, I figured that Loach had an excellent shot -- lefty bonafides, pretty movie star (C Murphy), long career, etc. I was watching Derek Jarman's dated, inert Jubilee recently, and when one of his associates on the DVD extras remarked on "the awful, realist British film tradition of Mike Leigh and Ken Loach," I blurted "Oh fuck you, faggot."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

from an anglo perspective it's a bit like 'we play both kinds, loach and jarman' -- two sides of a bankrupt coin.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

Loach can occasionally be tedious (and Jarman got better when he got a bit formalist), but he had a nice streak in the late '80s/ early '90s (eg Ladybird Ladybird).
