Big Brother (UK 2006) - Who are these painful showoffs? : thread 1

(ok, I couldn't think of an alternate kick-off title)

Right, here we (all) are, once again, today's the day one, and we all approach the start with a mixture of anticipation and dread.

Every year, it's supposedly meaner and more twisty than previous. The papers will get into a lather about how much and what kind of sex the inmates will all be / having, and unusually there's been strong speculation about some of the housemates being 'known' already. It seems that as the demarcation line between 'celebrity' and 'civilian' gets nearer, expect each contestant to have their own 'before they were famous' presspack/video of all their commercials/bitparts in blazin' squad videos/"You've been Framed" highlights.

So, sit back, scoff yr non-golden kitkats, and to heck with the show, watch this space...

Argh! Worst meme ever!

yeah this thread title got on my tits last year.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:22 (twenty years ago)

poor show mark.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:26 (twenty years ago)

No no no the worst meme ever is the thing where the titles of rolling or serial threads are automatically trashed. This is the second worst.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:29 (twenty years ago)

Look, the thread's still young. If there's a better one, let's get a mod to change it and put (was: etc) in the question text to not confuse the subsequent reader. I don't mind, really.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:31 (twenty years ago)

Surely you could work "morons and scum" in there somewhere?

Action Tim Vision (noodle vague), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:32 (twenty years ago)

mmm, needs work, carry on.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:33 (twenty years ago)

'who are these morons and scum?'

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:34 (twenty years ago)

.. and that's better?

.. why would you want a lanyard?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:35 (twenty years ago)

Why, do the pants seem sensible?

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Play a game of 'Find Big Brother'
45% combed cotton +45% modal +10% Lycra = 100% sexy
Available sizes : L

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:37 (twenty years ago)

xpost well, pants are pants. What's a lanyard for?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:38 (twenty years ago)

For holding your phone if your hands are otherwise engaged, e.g. playing a game of 'find big brother', I guess

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:40 (twenty years ago)

It's the usual thing with 'merch'. The staff of Endemol get all this dished out to them and put the rest of the stock on-line to pay for all the freebies. Prob.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:43 (twenty years ago)

How much do they make from the texts, do you spose?

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:44 (twenty years ago)

so they might be able to discuss nominations this year? I'm not sure I agree with that idea, it takes a lot of the back stabbing mind games out of the house

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 18 May 2006 08:45 (twenty years ago)

but then again it might just conjure up different ones

But for him the worst thing about being on Big Brother is the local youths who knock on his door in the middle of the night shouting: "This is Big Brother, you are evicted." He doesn't find it funny.

The wannabes will be filmed moving into Britain's most famous house
from 9pm — where they'll stay for up to 13 weeks.

We previously revealed they include former Miss Wales Imogen Thomas,
23, well-endowed Tourette's sufferer Peter Stephenson and a posh pal
of Prince Harry's.

Also lined up are a believer in Native Indian spirituality, a knitter,
a mum, a bagpipe player and a gay barman who enjoys six-in-a-bed.

Others include a fella who's made a home for his hamster in the walls
of his house — and someone who's been unemployed for 21 years.

Two housemates claim to be experts in doing the splits, and one was
head boy at his school. Another was a nude model for 3,000 bikers.

One wannabe is obsessed with shaving his body, another is a veggie and
one is a Sloane Ranger. Another claims to have been celibate for SEVEN
years. One brags to have spent £1,000 on lingerie in a single shopping
spree and another says they learnt to drive at just two-years-old

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:18 (twenty years ago)

Well endowed Tourettes sufferer? What can he say?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:19 (twenty years ago)

One can only imagine.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:21 (twenty years ago)

BEST BB EVER!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:21 (twenty years ago)

my bed would never fit six.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:22 (twenty years ago)

I really hope they don't do what they did last year and fill the house with incredibly dull women who claim to be nymphos on the desperate hope they'll have sex in the house.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:22 (twenty years ago)

actual nymphos only amirite

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:27 (twenty years ago)

a mum

So there's at least one person who probably has had sex at least once in their lives, we can say that for sure.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:34 (twenty years ago)

"Native Indian spirituality" HAHAHAHAHA! Conflation/ignorance alert!

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:34 (twenty years ago)

Last year weren't they all 'Buddhists' i.e. they sat cross-legged intoning a mantra nicked from some film? Did you notice Rula's mantra (Celeb BB) and Kemal's mantra were the same? What the hell film did they nab it from? Help

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:39 (twenty years ago)

It might have been from "Help". There were a few short mantras there.

Kula Shaker have reformed!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Film ref for 'nam yoho renge kyo' is "Tina: What's Love Got To Do With It", isn't it?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:57 (twenty years ago)

Nam My?h? Renge Ky? - The mantra is referred to as daimoku (??, "title") and was first "revealed" by the Japanese Buddhist teacher Nichiren on the 28th day of the fourth lunar month of 1253 ce at Kiyosumi-dera (also, Seich?ji) near Kominato in current-day Chiba, Japan. The practice of chanting the daimoku is called sh?dai. The phrase is somewhat difficult to render into English because each word or set of words contains a complex set of symbolism and connotation, and without an understanding of the symbology behind the words, the full meaning is lost.

Though My?h? Renge Ky? has numerous English renderings, such as "The Scripture of the Lotus of the Perfect Truth", it is most commonly referred to as, simply, the Lotus Sutra.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 18 May 2006 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo without the ?'s

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 18 May 2006 11:02 (twenty years ago)

it's an uncertain mantra to be sure...

Every time Voiceover Man talks about George and Nikki I think about the Golden Grill in Camden.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:08 (twenty years ago)

That used to be in Camden, I mean.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:09 (twenty years ago)

any reason?

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

"It went drastically wrong," she conceded.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I like how Nikki kept pressing her* for more and more gory details. Perv. They should be on ILX.

*every way I tried to phrase that "probed her" etc, came out all wrong.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Because it was called George & Nicky's Golden Grill.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

How old is the son she's doing this all for again? Is he at 'getting the shit kicked out of him at school because his mum's just admitted to doing something filthy with an electric whisk in front of millions of people' age?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:20 (twenty years ago)

you're never too young for that.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Oof. I witnessed that conversation, it wasn't pretty. Thing is she would whisper it to Nikki who would then shout out - at unbelievable volume - "UGH, SHE SAID SHE LIKES THE TASTE OF PISS-COVERED COCKS!".
And to think Lea was worried about what her children might read about her in the newspapers - how about her keeping her mouth shut?

David Orton (scarlet), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

bit late for that.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 26 May 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

God, I used to loved the Golden Grill. There was a great bloke called Vange who used to work there - he'd have been super on BB.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 26 May 2006 15:47 (twenty years ago)

I witnessed the pissy cock/electric whisk conversation too. Nikki was actually being quite funny during it.

Then she was in the bedroom throwing a fit about her sleeve reeking of BO and pinning the blame on Pete, because he'd put his arm around her. She made the other girls have a sniff and they declared they couldn't smell anything and said she seemed to have a bit of an "issue with scent".

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

She's scentsitive.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 26 May 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

On BBLB, Dermot just called Bonner Bonner! One of us! ("make Bonner a goner" he said)

Pete and Lisa - I'm loving it!

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Friday, 26 May 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Grace & George - wtf? Even Davina was compelled to express her disbelief.

"You are live on Channel 4, please do not swear."
[housemates all point and laugh at Pete]
"Well, try not to."

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 26 May 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Ohmigod, Glyn's post-lapdance reverie was the worst thing I've ever seen. Nice for the little lad, though. Wish Bonnie had stayed. though. Amazing accent.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 26 May 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

why do they tell them not to swear anyway? the recorded programme must have 500 fucks in it every night.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 26 May 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

And yet they censor the subtitles, when you can perfectly hear the "Bitch arse" bit that's censored.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Friday, 26 May 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I did find myself drawn into watching when they were showing Nikki in a dress that almost-but-not-quite covered her bum. Is that wrong of me?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 26 May 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Right, have we worked out how the fuck they're going to put together a "highlights" package for Bonner or not?

"Realleh?"

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 26 May 2006 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Crap housemate. Crap eviction. I think BB needs to abandon the crappy concept of immunity.

Onimo says crap (GerryNemo), Friday, 26 May 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Onimo = truth. I want NOMINATIONS I want EVICTIONS. I want linearity, not randoms staying on week after week for no obvious reason.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 26 May 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Why have I started finding Russell Brand funny?

"Barry Gibb out of the Bee Gees has just written a West End Musical bout me, it's called 'Ballbag' exclamation mark!"

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 26 May 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Why have I started finding Russell Brand funny?

Because you are DRUNK!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 21:24 (twenty years ago)

because he's hysterical. all that stuff about shabazz acting like Lady Di gave me the roffles.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 26 May 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Because you are DRUNK!

I would love this to be true, but for once it is not.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 26 May 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Shame (me neither). You have mail, btw.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I missed the eviction and interview shows tonight (though I did win actual real cash money in a quiz night, so, y'know, needs must). I take it it isn't even worth watching the repeat?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

You'd get more enjoyment watching The Mint.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 26 May 2006 21:53 (twenty years ago)
