why are so many people over sensitive about the most vaguely race related comments?

jeez, its like you cant say anything without someone getting all PC about it. its very silly. for instance, today i said something about african social workers who are sent to help my grandmother but can usually be relied on to borrow a small tip or two from underneath her mattress, and i was made to feel like im not allowed to say such a thing. i dont see why, just because i make a comment about someone who isnt white that it has to be seen to be racist or some sort of implied prejudice. moreover, why must it be that if i have something to say about someone 'of colour', im not allowed to say it? all this PC, OTT sensitivity, is pandering and far too oversubscribed. its not like everyone black or asian is that bothered either, like a lot of left wing followers might have you believe, i work with one black girl and one asian guy and neither of them seem offended when i say what i feel.

'i work with one black girl and one asian guy and neither of them seem offended when i say what i feel. '

Just cos they don't say anything doesn't mean they're not offended. I feel quite offended when my co-worker uses the word 'irish' in place of the word 'stupid' but I've not yet said anything because I don't want to cause a big fuss and be labelled as 'oversensitive'.

How does whether or not they are African relate in any way to what you're trying to say, if you aren't trying to make a "those people" kind of comment?

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

They were white supremicist south africans robbing his poor old black granny. I think it's relevant.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

I think the main point here is that granny should think about opening a checking account.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

i was assuming it was a euphemism.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

First sensible answer (Ally, though Onimo makes a point, and nabisco sound financial advice).

Certainly it is descriptive and may just be an adjective thrown in, but it is not clearly as relevant at the "Social worker" bit - since clearly someone trained as a social worker should not be stealing. Therefore the African becomes significant, as it is the only way of distinguishing this social worker from any other. Add this to a long standing racist perception of black people being untrustworth or theiving and you have a comment which could be considered racist.

Now of course your contention could be that their Africaness is important, and is indeed the cause of their theivery - which would be a very essentialist line on human behaviour. But the power of a statement is not just in your intentions, but what others read into it. If others read that you were say "All black people are theives", and that is not what you meant, then it behooves you to consider how such a misunderstand could come out of your words. If that is what you meant however, you are clearly a racist.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Pete surely no one should be stealing, at all?

what if this is the real Robin Hood type shit?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Well, yes, of course nobody should be stealing, but I might take the posters side in that "someone stole from my grandmother" lacks the kind of cut and thrust of descriptive power that the finer conversations have. It strikes me that the social worker bit is more significant than the Africanness, but such a sentence construction could suggest otherwise in delivery.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

This dude I knew who was a geology student loved to tell Jew jokes, Irish jokes, Polish jokes, and here and there, a few Black jokes. We were out camping in the Rockies, about a dozen of us, spring break. We all knew this guy really well.

We're sitting around the campfire passing around the square bottle, telling stories. Bottle gets to, let's call him Special Ed, and he zips off a Jew joke. He's got this look in his eye that says, "I know this is going to piss you off." You know, a real loaded smirk.

A bunch of us groan. Somebody calls out Special Ed for his bullshit, and he goes into the predictable PC rant. He was being pretty genuine, though, and we were all friends. His best friend, Let's call him AP, was there, and AP is black. AP is used to his shit (Special Ed is kinda like AP's little buddy, like the little dog running around asking what are we going to do what are we going to do), and somehow, for reasons that don't make a lot of sense but we all kind of understand, this diffuses the situation. AP just shakes his head and says something condescending and punches Special Ed in the shoulder. Special Ed laughs because this is their relationship.

So I take a shot at the PC thing. I start explaining how I think the concept of "Political Correctness" is bullshit, and go into the origins of the term. I hate it when people are all hair-trigger sensitive too. But I explain why racist commentary has negative effects. I go into the history of racism a little. I talk about how I believe language has meaning and power and is the stuff of our souls. I am eloquent, or at least I am Jack Daniels eloquent, and that was just fine, because at this point at the evening I had a Jack Daniels audience.

So Special Ed says OK I hear you, but. And then he launches into a stream of racist jokes. Irish, Polish, Jew, Black. We are all rolling on the ground laughing. AP has his hand on Special Ed's shoulder and he is laughing too, so hard, he's crying.

Special Ed says, "see, they're funny." And AP says, "No, dude, those jokes suck, it's just that you're so earnest." And that was so right on the mark we all doubled over again, laughing until we were panting and wiping the tears from our eyes.

And Special Ed laughed a little too, but mostly he seemed to sober up a little. And because he was such a cool guy and because we were all friends, he took it to heart a little and got a little wiser. At least he understood that we weren't a bunch of PC whiners.

So my point here is that Special Ed was a friend amongst friends, and I don't know who the fuck you are. And I am so tired of fucking whiny white boys bitching about PC every time they want to say something racist, esopecially when it's meant to provoke a reaction. I mean you know that you would never think to ever say, "WHITE social workers who are sent to help my grandmother but can usually be relied on to borrow a small tip or two from underneath her mattress." You fucking know you wouldn't make that distinction. So fuck you, you stupid whiny racist bitch.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

The controversially-named person in FB's story was so fixated on the rules of PC that he missed the forest for the trees (ie, people were laughing at him not because his jokes were funny but because he so earnestly believed they were funny when they weren't). Your reaction to the story was to gloss over the point and fixate on the controversial name. You're reacting in the same way from the other side of the spectrum.

Dan (I Am Not Saying You're A Racist) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, the whole point of your message that making fun of race is not OK is a bit soured by your making fun of the handicapped/differently abled.

You are right, in that my Special Ed comment was insensitive, but my message wasn't that "making fun of race is not OK." I mean, I think we can all agree on that. I don't even presuppose that jameslatimerlewis thinks making fun of race is OK.

The point of my story is that there exist white boys who make racist comments, maybe slight and maybe not necessarily malicious, but obviously loaded, who want to play dumb and protect themselves by deflaiting criticism of said comments by accusing their critics of being overly sensitive PC fanatics, who whine about their persecution, and that these extant white boys are completely full of shit and no matter how much they whine or roll their eyes, they are stupid fucking little dick-heads (there, I didn't say bitch).

Furthermore, when these said white boys set up their comments in advance with whining about their inevitable persecution by the PC crowd, they are being pointedly mendacious.

Like people who volunteer in Africa? Are we talking about black people, here? Didn't they having any thieving white workers to send over?

who are sent to help my grandmother
What kind of "help" are we talking about, here? Delivering a meal, cleaning, emptying bedpans... this is pretty vague.

but can usually be relied on to borrow
Since when is "borrow" a polite euphemism for "steal?" If they're doing a criminal act, say steal. It's a lot clearer and much less of a lame move.

a small tip or two from underneath her mattress
What's this "tip" thing, is it another effort to be witty and downplay theft? So it's such a paltry concern that we'll be polite and "ignore" it by posting about it on the interweb?
So your grandmother saves her money under the mattress? Has she ever thought of, I don't know, a bank? I know old people distrust banks (STEREOTYPES AHOY) but maybe that'd be a better choice. Or in a purse or home safe, I hear those are popular.

uh, as long as said upper middle class white women receiving a university education still have to worry about walking alone on campus at night...and have near-zero chance of seing a fellow woman being elected to the highest political office in the u.s., then i think their "pc" gripes concerning being oppressed are valid.
