Irrational hatred of people who have the same name as you

I find it really hard to like anyone else if they're called Jim. Apologies to noodle, and to ESOJ, and to any others here, but...you know. A couple of my friends have other Jims that they mention sometimes, and it always seems to trigger pangs of jealous resentment in me. I even got one while reading the WDYLL thread just now, when Barms mentioned this gay Asian Jim dude. Get off my turf, gay Asian Jim! I'm the London Jim!

JimD (JimD), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:27 (nineteen years ago)

That darn Sasha Frere-Jones.

But really, that *is* irrational. I mean, you can hardly own Jim.

You're just jealous because B was pimping the other Jim out to Phil, aren't you?

um, partly, yeah.

I thought we'd had a very similar thread before. I accidentally offended Matt Coastaltown.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 26 May 2006 07:43 (nineteen years ago)

I don't mind Jim. I get jealous about people called Noodle.

(also, I didn't realise esoj wasn't a real Jim. Dude, that puts you back in my good books, obv).

The other day when ken got my number from me, I seem to remember insisting that he put me in his phone as "Primary Jim". Although the details are fuzzy, I was drunk cos finland had just won eurovision.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 26 May 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

I can't think of anyone with my name that I like. I'm sure there must be someone.

It's annoying as fuck going to Celtic games, someone in the crowd shouts "Gerry!" and *everyone* turns round to see if it's them.

Is Jerry with a J short for Jeremy or is it a name in its own right? If so then I suppose Jerrys have more right to the name than Gerards. Is Jerry with a J a North American thing? I don't think I know any British Jerrys.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 26 May 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

Geri Halliwell? Gerry Marsden? Gerry Creaney? Actually, maybe you have a point.

I used to go to school with lots of people with the same first name as me. I didn't like them, but then again I was a misanthrope and didn't like anyone.

Bastard Footballer with a London (I think) premiership squad and his popularity on Google. How will people from my past ever be able to check up on how amazingly well *I* am doing? (I'm super, thanks for asking)

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 26 May 2006 08:54 (nineteen years ago)

I have a very dull, common name. There are half a dozen people at my university with it. There's at least one in my department, although he runs Buildings Services and I sit in front of a blackboard weeping about lost minus signs. I get the odd email asking me to move a fork lift truck and he gets emails telling him to read papers about galactic dynamics.

I don't hate him though. He's a teddy boy, which is admirable. More admirable than being a PhD student anyway.

OTM.

I love (platonically) my famous namesake pro wrestler Mark "The Hammer" Coleman (he's even from southern Ohio like me!). Recently I've become aware of a celebrity journalist also named MC here in NYC, don't hate him (yet) though given what I used to do for a living I'm wondering if people think we're the same person?

m coleman (lovebug starski), Friday, 26 May 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

I emailed the other day about a job I was applying for and had the application form sent back with a covering note saying "how strange, we already have an A*l*a W**son who works here". I took this as a sign that confusion would reign if I took the job and didn't apply for it.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 26 May 2006 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

M Coleman, I had no idea you were a Mark. For some reason I had you down as Martin or Matthew (not Matt).

Caek, I read your name as Ca-Ek and think of you as a relative of Superman, I hope that's okay.

The internet still indicates to me that I (firstname lastname) am unique in the entire world. If anyone wants to prove me wrong, please do!

Crimea River (Mark C), Friday, 26 May 2006 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

One of the teachers at my FE college was called Jerry (shortened to Jel), a name in its own right, nobody acted like it was rare.

I don't hate people with the same name as me, since I don't really know any (i've known... one person with my name? and she spelt it differently). They generally only exist as middle-aged people's maiden aunts or similar that my mother decides to tell me about, and variant spellings/pronunciations that people come out with. I'm not much of a fan of that girl in that Oscar Wilde play though as she is a wet and causes people to tell me how simply pretty they think the name is.

My husband's name is Austin and he bitterly complains about how common it is now (apparently due to a daytime soap opera popularizing it during the mid-90s). I guess the bright side is that he'll always be a lot older than all the rest of the Austins wandering about.

Sara Robinson-Coolidge (Sara R-C), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

I just don't like people having my name because they always seemed to get me mixed up with the other person with my name. Hence the long series of ridiculous screen names.

Bluebell Madonna (Ex Leon), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

I met this girl last night who already knows TWO other Sarah Johnsons.

I moved around alot growing up. At one high school, I was continually be called to the principal's office for something a different Sarah Johnson did. They would make me sit alone in a room, then come in and yell at me until I could get a word in edgewise to explain it was someone else.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

I met this girl last night who already knows TWO other Sarah Johnsons.

I deduce therefore that now I know two as well, counting another longtime friend of mine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 May 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

The first google match for my full name brings you to a webpage of a man who writes Roy Orbison wrapped in Clingfilm slash. I don't hate him, but i've had people assume it was me with the odd and very specific fetish.

I don't mind other people sharing my first name (it is very common!), as long as i'm the first "michael" in their mobile phonebook. Otherwise i end up being "mike work" or "mike sheffield" or "mike ginger" or "mike some other suffix". People have surnames for a reason!

I have no problem with other people names "Rob", although I do have a real hate-on for a certain singer who shares the same last as me. And that hatred is NOT irrational, based on the awfulness of his music. "I celebrate his entire catalogue", etc.

As an Austin, I don't run into this very much (see previous posting), but as a resident of Austin, TX I sometimes have a hard time. And of course the fact that I think Michael Meyers should be drawn and quartered is something of a problem. Much worse than the soap thing, which I'd never heard of.

If I'm honest, I'm probably glad that I share my name with someone very famous, because it helps google-proof me. But I do get annoyed at people who have decided to adopt my first actual name as their nickname, and when I across them I get pretty annoyed. Especially as my name is otherwise fairly unusual.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 26 May 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Once I came across this Washington Post listing of sold property where a person with my exact name and middle initial had bought some sort of real estate in Maryland. At first I was afraid someone had stolen my identity, because my first name is not common, leave alone paired with my last name, leave alone paired with the same middle initial, and leave alone the fact that Ethiopians aren't supposed to have middle initials anyway. But the property sold for like $200k, so I can safely assume my identity and credit record had nothing to do with it.

Do I harbor an irrational hatred of whoever this person is? Kind of, actually. It would have been awesome, actually, to see someone with my name, but the middle initial is just a step too far.

Good Morning:

I thought it wise to copy you with the attached agenda so you won’t be “blindsided” when I call on you at the meeting.

Joan, as with last year’s meeting, will you have the Treasures Reports to hand out? (If you do I’ll be happy to make copies for you.)

Jacque just give a verbal report on the last Board meeting we had.

[pplains] I will ask for an update on the Drainage Problems caused by the Morning Side Construction.

Committee Reports: I will give each Committee an opportunity to report.

David & [pplains] before calling for a vote on Amendments to the BYLAWS I’ll give you the floor to explain & answer questions.

Since I haven’t heard back on nominations from the nomination committee, I will open the floor to discussion & nominations. I will ask all those listed on the Proxy Vote if they are elected to the board, would they be willing to serve? Then I will call for a vote.

Should there be any additions or suggestions, please let me know by next weekend.

Thanks,

Dick

While Tre Baker looks a little modern (if you google it, you'll likely find a Harvard grad who writes for dangerousnegro.com before coming across pictures of Bobby Petrino associated with the sports site I work for), my real name is much more conservative and old-fashioned. (it was my grandfather's, hence why I'm a Tre).

So every once in awhile I get these Kappa Alpha Psi invitations to go skiing on a reunion weekend addressed to the other Tre Baker and then get some crazy Tea Party missive addressed to my real name's address. Kind of a weird feeling, how these other people are traipsing through life with my name like that.

I have an irrational hate of people who think they have the same gmail address as me. So much shit is people signing up for crap and using my email.

I have the exact same issue as pplains, but I feel my name is even more common.

When I sign up for a new online service and enter "aimless" as my sign-on, I am always pissed-off when it has already been taken and I have to adulterate the purity of my sign on handle. wtf, false aimlesses, you were never me.

I briefly dated a Lee, spent three weekends together before breaking it off. Mainly because we just saw things too differently to be a viable couple, but it would have felt really strange having a girlfriend with the same name as me.

Jeff otm, I have a folder with over 500 mails called "Farrells", from various people who think they have my email address. Most of them are harmless and quite apologetic - Annas and Amandas and Aarons, oh my. Highlights in ascending order are

. Someone who has used my email address for Redbox, which I guess is an automated video library in convenience stores? This one is in a 7-11 in Washington, and it's kind of interesting to get a random report on someone's impulse-rentals

. Anthony Farrell, affarr✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧, who is a senior member of the Institute of Structural Engineers, Caribbean Branch. He seems to be doing well, a lot of the mails are serious contractors and investors mailing him about serious things. The conference he arranged last year with my email address on the pdf application form was a bit rough for both of us, though.

. And then there's the Farrells who included me in their round emails after the matriarch of the family had died, and the estate needed settling. I corrected the sender, but by that time other people had responded and I had to email them, and jesus none of that was fun.

Maybe one day, we will need categories again.
