What do you think of the idea of creating a new pavilion every year? What's been your favourite so far? Are you looking forward to Koolhaus's one? [Looks awesome in the artist's mock-up]

Bah, spelling mistake. Should read Koolhaas.

I've liked 'em all but especially the Daniel Libeskind one (if I had to choose). There's a flickr group with a few photos of various pavilions on (including one of the Libeskind in Cork).

Definitely looking forward to this year's. I was hugely excited by the concept-art of the one for 2004, a big shame it never got built.

Thanks for the photos, Ned. Brought back a lot of memories of the Portuguese pavilion - really subtle, curvy and lovely.

The one that never got built sounded amazing didn't it?

Here's some pictures of the proposed 2004 pavilion.

It does look amazing but I think I can see why they had problems!

This looks familiar from the Venice biennale last year. One of the pavilions was kind of extended upwards and outwards, as if it had gained this massive growth, and there was a series of internal passages and staircases which took you to the top. I wonder if it was the same artist/architect.

It's cool that they're all more or less still in existence, think I'll have to pop down to Battersea to see the Toyo Ito one.

Very similar - but by the sculpter Hans Schabus.

Crikey, that's the fella. Thanks, Ned.

MVRDV are pretty incredible. they're much greater, more interesting and more rigorous than Koolhaas, who seems to construct so much bluster round his buildings which often come off like student projects IMO.

have a look at MVRDV's WOZOCO housing project, first post here:

10(+) architects I have been thinking about

Hello Jed. Thanks for the link. I can't claim to be an expert on these matters, but this rem koolhaas library - seattle looks pretty damn impressive.

In any event, your post makes me wonder about the whole nature of the Serpentine pavilion concept. You mention that MVRDV are more rigorous than Koolhaas - I'm curious to know what you mean by this, especialy in the context of something as woolly as a pavilion in a pretty London park.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

i love koolhaas' seattle library actually. it was silly of me to set them against each other like that, they're both good. koolhaas is an important figure who i think is good when he's being provocative and less good when he tries to justify designs for prada stores with 1000 page books of crap designed to look like analysis. i'd rather he admitted he was just playing (it's good that some important architect is after all!) rather than engaged in something deeply philosophical.

hello daniel!

(will try and dig myself out of hole later when i have time)

Your explanation made perfect sense, don't worry!

This new pavilion certainly seems playful...

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

I went to see the new pavilion last night, although it isn't open for another week (I happened to be passing), and it is very spectacular. It looks like a hot air balloon and apparently they're going to project stuff onto the skin of the balloon.

There's a set on the construction here...

It's got one pic of the semi-inflated 'blob' so far but I'm sure they'll be more.

five years pass...

the H&dM is pretty joyless.

My favourite is still the Oscar Niemeyer one from 2003. Went there a few times, the MIMEO concert was really great. I seemed to have missed the last 3 as I've moved east.
