Blond Men: Classic Or Dud?

OK, turnabout is fair play.

I really fancy blond men. Both the floppy haired, white-blond public school variety (Julian Sands. Boris Johnson.) and also the sort of red-gold strawberry blond variety. (Jared Harris. David Bowie.)

Yet lots of women I know don't fancy blond men at all, in fact say that there's something revolting, icky, or even effeminate about blond men.

My brother is blond, and both he and a blond ex-boyfriend of mine have said the same thing - that they get saddled with one of a few stereotypes:

1) The Nazi
2) The Surfer Dude
3) The Homosexual

What is it about blond men? Praise or bury?

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

I always thought you had dark hair, Mark.

It had never occurred to me that a lot of women don't fancy blonde men. Although to be honest, the number of blonde guys I know is very low. I wonder why?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

So classic.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

Thing is, taking a brief look around my office as a sample, there are lots of blonde women. However, most of us are either totally unnatural, or "helped" to re-achieve our childhood haircolour.

I don't think that men "help" their hair on the same level - dying hair has not become as universally accepted among men as it is among women, even post David Beckham and his bleach.

So that the low level of blond men most people know corresponds to the low level of natural blonds, fullstop.

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

'tall dark stranger' seems to be a well established cultural 'thing' and there is no real 'blond(e)' equivalent.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

It's interesting that although there are plenty of blond male icons, none of them are very conventionally masculine and they often give off a sexually ambiguous vibe (Bowie, O'Toole etc). Is there any blond version of Steve McQueen or John Wayne?

i was talking to a blond man sometime in the last week or so and looking at his blond hair but now i can't even remember who it was. damn...

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if the "effeminate" thing might be it. It's definitely still considered effeminate in some circles for a man to highlight his hair. (one of my colleagues got a blond streak in his hair as some kind of football thing and suffered far more ribbing than any woman who had an obvious dye job.)

Or perhaps it's something in the nature of the blond archetype - that a lot of it projection of innocence (going back to that "blonde as a child" thing) - or of sexual vulnerability and/or availability. Not things that are supposed to be associated with males.

(And perhaps that's why I like it, old pervert that I am.)

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

x-post blond male action type = Robert Redford. (Another of my mum's celeb boyfriends.)

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno. All the blonde men who push my buttons are certainly sexually ambiguous and probably all dye jobs / fakes (David Bowie, Nick Rhodes, David Sylvian, Roy Batty, Legolas... Mr. Zora)

Zora (Zora), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

I was wondering what the picture in the Bond link would be - ah, a villain. Of course.

But complaints have often been levelled against Roger Moore not being the definitive Bond because he was "too blond". (Though what on earth Daniel Craig is going to do to this stereotype...)

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

x-post blond male action type = Robert Redford. (Another of my mum's celeb boyfriends.)

Not entirely convinced. He's not really a man's man action type, is he? He's not a role model for boys. He's more the type a girl would want to take home to meet her parents. He's definitely in touch with his feminine side.

It has "Men" in the subject

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

As a boy I was white blond, à la Boris Johnson. And I remember getting teased a lot about it because it was "girly". I'd say there's definitely a blond = femininity thing in our culture.

Revivalist (Revivalist), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

When we were children, my brother was often mistaken for a girl - but I think that had more to do with the length of his hair, rather than the white-blondness of it.

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

Is there any blond version of Steve McQueen?

Yes, there is, errrrrrrrrrrrrr, Steve McQueen :)

Dadaismus (Are we in love like I think we be?) (Dada), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

Blimey! So he was!

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:50 (nineteen years ago)

He's not very blond though. On the pics I just dragged up on Google, he looks at best dark blond, but more brown I'd say.

Revivalist (Revivalist), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

Michael Caine was blond, too, wasn't he? So used to seeing him with white hair, but I'm pretty sure he was blond in the 60s. Alfie was certainly blond. (The contrast was interesting. How could someone so innocent looking be so amoral?)

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

Blond hair (especially on men) tends to be quite seasonal, and really is dependent on the sun. (of sun-in in my brother's case)

Also dirt makes blond hair go darker. I remember Rod Stewart (definitely blond) talking about a photo of him on some album cover where his hair is so dirty it looks brown, so people thought he was a brunet. (What is the male of brunette?)

Adam is definitely a blond, but I remember that in the winter, especially if his hair was dirty, he looked distinctly ginger. (Not that I minded that one bit, mind you.)

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

Well, trying to tease this out a bit, I'd say that there are two (often overlapping) categories of male icons: those who are conventional role models for boys (John Wayne or Bruce Willis would be extreme versions), and those who are objects of desire for girls. In the former category, there are not many blonds, since blond = femininity. In the latter category, there are many more blonds, because the male icon as sexual object of desire cannot be unreservedly, autistically masculine like an action hero. He also has to be caring, nurturing, ie a little bit in touch with his feminine side. Hence O'Toole, Michael York, Bowie, Scott Walker in his Walker Bros days, New Romantic boys with dyed hair, etc etc.

Revivalist (Revivalist), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

Steve McQueen was blonde, look at the eyebrows! John Wayne wasn't dark and neither was Gary Cooper or Jimmy Stewart or Cagney or Randolph Scott etc. In fact, if anyone was sexually ambiguous in the 40s and 50s it was dark-haired men: Monty Clift; Rock Hudson; Tyrone Power; Farley Granger; Hurd Hatfield. I know this because I always tease my mum about how it seems like every actor she fancied when she was growing up turned out to be gay or bi!

Dadaismus (Are we in love like I think we be?) (Dada), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

You're ruining my thesis!

Revivalist (Revivalist), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:10 (nineteen years ago)

Hrrmmm. Makes sense in the context of older movies - that the blond men heroes were reserved WASP types, while the dark haired men were supposed to be more "passionate" Latin lover types.

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

The sociology of hair colour is obviously complex, but it's nevertheless a fact that blonde has been a major signifier of a certain type of female sexuality, from at least Jean Harlow on. And that must have some knock-on effect with regards male blondness.

Revivalist (Revivalist), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

Jimmy stewart was a live wire though, but more often than not an anti-hero.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

What about Richard Harris?

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

My guess is that in the 40s and 50s, hair colour for male stars represented a compromise. Too dark, and you were too 'ethnic'. Too blond, and you were too feminine. So most hovered somewhere from dark brown to dark blond. I mean, from that era you never see any strikingly blond male stars, do you.

Revivalist (Revivalist), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

Steve McQueen was blonde, look at the eyebrows!

I used to be blonde; I'm not really now; but I've always had very dark eyebrows.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

And, not to get into female blondeness (there's already a thread about that, that this one is a response to) but there are at many archetypes of female blondeness, though probably the two most common are the Jean Harlow/Jayne Mansfield/Marilyn Monroe ... oh blimey, I'm forgetting the most obvious of them all, what was her name? Comic voracious blonde? Well, the Sexually Voracious Blonde.

And also the girl next door innocent blonde, the milkmaid, farmer's daughter etc. blonde.

And there's Barbie which is somewhere between and yet neither.

(Argh, this is just going to get me started thinking about the Guardian article on Paris Hilton and I'll get really wound up. When this thread was supposed to be an excuse to talk about hott blonde boys.)

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

Male super-blonds in the 40s and 50s had a definitely streak of kinkiness - think of early rock star Heinz for example.

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

What about pre-Nazi blond men, as well? In the really early days of film, there were quite a few.

Errol Flynn... bloke who played Tarzan... was Douglas Firbanks blond or am I thinking of someone else?

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

No, I'm thinking of someone else. Douglas Fairbanks definitely dark (though colour seems to change from film to film, probably as a result of black and white film.)

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think Flynn was blond...

Hitchcock definitely had some evil blond guys, but I can't remember which film offhand.

Revivalist (Revivalist), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

In a rare colour shot, Errol Flynn definitely blond:

http://www.errolflynn.net/custerco.jpg

Though that hair pomade they used to slick their hair back, back then didn't help with colour identification.

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

I used to be blonde; I'm not really now; but I've always had very dark eyebrows.

Indeed, but have you ever seen a brunette with fair eyebrows? *shudder, what a horrible thought*

I mean, from that era you never see any strikingly blond male stars, do you.

Van Johnson, Richard Widmark... sort of Scandinavian/German American types. I'm sure there's more... Kirk Douglas! (representing the Russian Jewish Blond Massive - see also Danny Kaye!!)

Dadaismus (Are we in love like I think we be?) (Dada), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

The blonde surfer/sailor type with crinkled-up eyes and tanned, sinewy wrists = CLASSIC SQUARED.

Interestingly this is a type I thought a lot of in younger days (before I dated anyone at all), and then somehow never actually ran across as an adult, until recently. (Possible this is because they all live in summer towns/California where they can squint manfully against the sun all year 'round as they chart their marine escapades.)

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't the "dumb blonde" stereotype usually associated with femininity as well? And intelligence is a conventional masculine characteristic, so if a man is blonde then there might be a subconcious connection with unintelligence and ergo femininity? I have no particular preference for blonde or dark as both can be attractive.

salexandra (salexander), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

being blond..yeah it's been a funny old 30-odd years. the 'blonde as a child' / vulnerable thing has honestly never ocurred to me, i should have played on it more.

have had the 'queer' thing levelled at me from random strangers in the street, passing cars, people on public transport etc etc etc roughly twice a week non stop since forver. it's...*insane* the whole 'gay thing' you get with the colour, and if i happen to fasten the middle button on my denim jacket while i'm wandering through the streets...well i may aswell be singing 'i am what i am' at the top of my voice.

occasionally it isnt 'gay' stuff and you get 'oi (insert name of then-famous blond perosn)' so it's a good barometer of who's hot in popular culture but not much else! i've had 'oi erasure' oddly a couple of times recently, it was les dennis for about 6 months, it was 'oi thompson twins' (!!) once in front of about 500 people.
you just...get abuse in the streets! and you know that it's nothing to do with your face or shape or size it's ALL literally to do with the hair colour. whenever i talk to people about they don't believe me, or think i'm making it up or exaggerating but...man!

still we have more fum so fuck em.

OK things on this thread that need to be cleared up:

1) Steve McQueen was blonde. In fact very blonde. Please don't get confused by the quality of fading color photographs scanned into GIS; yes some of them make him look a bit darker but this is a photo taken in the later days of his life (after hair should darken significantly):
http://www.mesothel.com/images/McQueen.gif

2) There are indeed plenty of brunettes with light eyebrows, just as some blondes have heavy eyebrows.

Anyway, I fancy guys mostly with darker blonde hair, not so much super light but I'd take a light blonde over a dark haired dude almost always. I like surfer dude looks, to use the stereotype upthread.
