The Welsh Dream.

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

I've visited Cumbria but not Durham iirc (as opposed to passed through)

I don't think I've visited anywhere in Cornwall :(

No Isle Of Wight for me either.

No Lincolnshire, Leicestershire or Rutland seems wrong.

I passed through Lancashire for the first time only this year I think (unless I did when driven to Cumbria 13 years ago).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to Cornwall next month hopefully. Not so bothered about ticking the others off particularly soon.

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

Q: does travelling via train qualify as visiting a county?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

Rhyl is in Denbighshire, I think. Or possible Conwy. Maybe Flintshire, but I think it's further west than that.

A: that only counts as "passing through", I think, unless your trip was specifically to travel on that train.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

Vicky appears to be another one of those Brighton-hatas!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

except that's rubbish, cos I'm sure I ticked Lancashire, given that I lived there for rather a long time...

I'm a bit usless at knowing which counties places are in, so it's probably all rubbish.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

Martian - no, that's going through a county. To visit a county you actually have to get out and see something there.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think that going through on a train counts.

But I counted driving through during touring because often we used to chose deliberately obscure routes in order to get a look at the countryside. We often went to look at local landmarks - not necessarily getting out of the car, but definitely choosing a roundabout route to see things that took our fancy on the map.

many x-posts

yes, I'm rubbish cos I've been to brighton. And I think I've missed off the county that Dover's in... unless I couldn't point to Dover on a map. Which I probably couldn't, isn't dover in Kent? Which means I did tick it off, but I'd fail miserably trying to point it out on the map, I just checked. Oh dear....

This illustrates the disadvantages of regionalised education, my knowledge of Scottish regions is now useless cos they changed them all, and I haven't got a clue about English counties.

How can you not point Dover out on a map?! I thought it was one of those places, like Land's End, that everyone could point out.

(It's the bit closest to France, innit?)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

I always think Rutland is much further North than it is.

When did Cleveland get absorbed by whatever county absorbed it?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Looks like no one has been to Shetland and Orkney and I'm the only one to visit the Outer Hebrides. North Uist to be precise.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

unless Cleveland was never a county (a ref book/map remembered from my childhood insists otherwise but could well be wrong).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

where is kent or east angular?

remember jade from big bruvver

"Spencer: "You know you see those people in Venice standing on the back of gondolas, pushing it around?"
Jade: "They don't do that on the Thames though, do they?"
Spencer: "No. I don't work on the Thames. I work in Cambridge."
Jade: "Is there not the Thames there?"
Spencer: "No!"
Jade: "Is there a river called the Cambridge river?"
Spencer: "Yeah, it's called the Cam."
Jade: "Really? You swear? I only thought there was the Thames. I thought that was the main one in London."
Spencer: "It is. I don't live in London."
Jade: "I'm confused. I thought Cambridge was in London. I knew Birmingham weren't in London."
Spencer: "Would you like to go and tell the group what you just said?"
Jade: "No..."
Spencer: "Cambridge is a city."
Jade: "But we've got a city in London."
Spencer: "Yes. This city is called London. And there's different parts of it. Cambridge is a city."
Jade: "Of where? Kent?"
Jade: "Well England's a country, London's a city, Bermondsey's just a throw-off. Now where are you? What's your country, and what's your things?"
Spencer: "What country am I from? England. The city is called Cambridge, the county Cambridgeshire."
Jade: "So not Kent then?"
Spencer: "Nooooo.... The region is called East Anglia."
Jade: East Angular? That's abroad. Is there not a place called East Angular abroad?"
Spencer: "Jade, have you been taking the stupid pills again?"
Jade: "Every time people tell me they work in East Angular, I actually think they're talking about near Tunisia and places like that. Am I thick?"
Spencer: "Well, I hate to say it, but you are."
Jade: "Cos Scottish and Irish and all that comes under England, doesn't it?"
Spencer: "No... They come under Great Britain. Scotland and Wales have their own flags. Northern Ireland and Ireland are different."
Jade: "So they're not together? Where's Berlin?"
Spencer: "Germany...""

I think I have been to almost all of these counties, mostly from childhood camping holidays and football away games. I have definitely not been anywhere in Scotland much further north or east of Inverness, and i don;t think I've been to South Wales other than to Cardiff and Hay-on-Wye...

I have never heard of Rutland. Is it new?

Also, I can never hear enough of Kate's love for Rugby.

Oh, Rutland of Rutland Water. Okay, I have been there.

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

When I last went to Rutland it was still part of Leicestershire. Does this count?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 13 July 2006 07:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was gonna say that Rugby was in Warwickshire. I have (had?) a whole collection of interesting facts and famous sons of Rugby that I picked up in a little rack next to the MacDonalds last time I was there.

We need to tour soon, it's been too long since I randomly went to Rugby.

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Thursday, 13 July 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

None of them are the worst. I think I can think of something good about them all. In Lincolnshire, the wolds are especially lovely.
