I had a blog that started getting a little attention around 2001 I think it was, and my wife alerted me to a bunch of hits from a site that actually originated in the town we lived in. I looked at some of the threads on the site, made an ass of myself talking smack about dance music, and ended up learning a lot. Over time I made some cherished aquaintances and got some of the hardest, best laughs I've ever had. After a while my day job started attracting the rare visitor who'd come to ilx looking for me personally, which weirded me out and made me feel protective of them when they'd get laffed at, so I changed my name - at first just for some threads, then eventually and in a fit of pique, for all of them. That one time was the only time I stormed off the board in a huff; I was gone for a little while, but I enjoyed the funny threads too much, and have friends whose online company I really enjoy. People would let me know when there was some Momus-disagreein' that needed done. Still, the threads full of long posts analysing music or politics had long since given way to bulletin-board stuff that could as easily have occcurred, and probably with better results, on the comments pages of individual blogs. An anonymous person remarked on my blog that they thought there should be an arranged marriages thread for long-term singles on ILX.

Now, if ILX does go down for good, we should just set randomers up with one another, so they can get their ILX fix in their very own house!

And then when the server finally gets ressurrected, they can report back on how it went - match made in heaven or horribly wrong.

I'm thinking, why not just have everyone live together in a rented gym or something? Everyone can wander around, dragging around their sleeping bag, interrupting other people's conversations with mildly amusing non-sequiters and descriptions of funny jpegs. ("Like, there's this owl, right...")
