Now he is in hospital, on hunger strike and wants to die.

I have to say, whilst I can totally understand the jumping out of the window part of the story, I just can't conceptualise the thought processes of someone who takes their kids with them on their suicide mission. It seems to happen quite a lot, though. What exactly do they hope to gain by this?

The guy was clearly mentally ill before they went.

A holiday is not a cure or a salve for that.

He should have been sent to hospital.

Emily, I think men who do this often see their family as an extension of themselves. If they feel they have failed as a man and father, or see no way out of the situation they're in, then they feel the urge to scorch the whole thing, rather than just themselves.
