OMG BEST MOVIE EVER

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

National Archives -- Like the Library of Congress, this collection of our nation’s history is most often used as a setting for research. In JFK, Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) searched its corridors in vain for clues to the Kennedy assassination. Look for the National Archives in All the President’s Men, Eraser, JFK, Protocol, Shadow Conspiracy, and True Colors.

secret home fries magic:

1. peel and chop potatoes into home fry size. This is precisely the same size as 1/3rd of your pinky finger.
2. toss in bowl with olive oil and seasonings (salt and black pepper, perhaps some old bay, perhaps some garlic powder, whatever) until all chunks have been resolutely tossed with true conviction.
3. dump 100% of bowl contents into cast iron frying pan at medium high. medium high is the exact temperature at which oil is burblin' burblin' but not yet spittin' spittin'. use an implement other than your hand or a knife to push fries around until each is approximately 50% immersed in oil.
4. Let the burblin' continue unmolested for a number of minutes between 9 and 11.
5. Go back in time at least 15-20 minutes and tune the oven to a frequency of 275 fahrenheits.
6. Return to the present time and use fireproof mitten to place entire cast iron pan and its contents into oven. top shelf is where it's at.
7. Like a half hour will pass. check and make sure oil keeps burblin, and that the tops of the fries are becoming the umber that isn't burnt.
8. When you are happy, turn off the oven. Remove pan from oven. Remove contents of pan, put on bowl or plate. Eat contents of bowl or plate. Use a fork.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 28 August 2006 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

I have conclusive proof that the $4 plate of rosemary roasted potatoes with pimenton aioli served at Bar Pilar at 8:30pm on August 26th, 2006 was 100% delicious.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 28 August 2006 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

I'm totally fine with this thread becoming I Love Potatoes.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 28 August 2006 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

Tombot, that's how I do home fried potatoes do, sorta. Okay not really. I chop em up, boil until they're soft and then I pan sear (ha!) them until they are crispy.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 28 August 2006 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

I, too, could support that.

Give me twice baked any day. Not so much of a mashed fan, but a good roasted is awesome.

Tom, I am making that homefries recipe this weekend. For sure.

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

Secret home fries magic is to use last night's chips, preferably from a chip shop that fries in beef dripping, chop up with scissors, fry up with onions and a little chilli in some bacon dripping.

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if she actually likes Bisto Gravy... I'd be dismayed to go around her house to find a rival brand....

JTS (JTS), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

b-b-but twice baked pretty much = mashed!

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 August 2006 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Sort of, Q. I dig on the blended and re-cooked aspect of twice baked. Mashed just never caught me the right way.

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Monday, 28 August 2006 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

omg britishes food! why not put some lard on top while you're at it?

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 August 2006 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

Hi n/a. I am lobbying to stay in the area around xmas, so hopefully we will be around for DC-area beer consumption!

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

Dude set me up with one (1) thermal cycler and I can do it for you in my kitchen.

Interestingly, that mutation is clustered in Scandanavians. It never occurs in black Africans, who could really use it. One more reason to support mixed-race matings!

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

So yeah MW please be more black.

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Last night, KG hit the hay way early and I was left w/Aussie and In-Laws. Aussie's train left Union Station this morning @ 3 am, so K's Dad offered to drive her there. Aussie said thanks, but she'd planned to take the bus downtown to say goodbye to her friend at the youth hostel (11th & K or something?) and then see a movie (at 11 at night???) and then walk all the way to Union Station (at 2 am) with two giant backpacks and another huge bag of clothes. Aussie is like 18 years old, too.

What followed was this gigantically awkward moment: K's dad trying not to fly into a rage and tell her that this was a dumbass idea, and gently persuading her that he should let him drive her there. I believe the phrase, "Well if you want to be stupid, go right ahead," was used at least twice. So Aussie took bus downtown at 10, K's dad drove to youth hostel at 2, called her cell phone, she said she'd be right down. Pulls up to the curb ten minutes later in a cab.

She did leave us a bottle of wine, though. Kate's dad is a saint, too.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 21 September 2006 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

dude I've had the sub-one-week-of-work bonus too. stick around for times of great turmoil with customer, that's when the iron is hot.

If I could buy forgiveness for the Great Cockup of scheduling fly-fishing outing with pops on same weekend as birthday parties, electric six concerts, etcetera, then I would buy that!

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 21 September 2006 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

This Paul & Joe blazer from Target is really nice, but why is it yellow?

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-3/qid=1158881732/ref=sr_1_3/601-3600720-4096147?%5Fencoding=UTF8&asin=B000GD5ACO

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

sx is crazy old. but you'd never know it if he weren't so wise.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

Intriguing. All of the people who wrote comments about that blazer loved. Should I go ahead and get it, or is it a case of the emperor's new clothes?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

you'd have to go to a store though.. it only comes in XS and XL on the website.. hey, what abt this
one?

I went to the target on rt 50 once and looked at the Paul and Joe stuff, some of it was neat.. though the skirts are insanely short, except a black silk wrap one that was v nice (except overpriced for what it was). I got this top in navy blue.

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 22 September 2006 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

Should I go ahead and get it, or is it a case of the emperor's new clothes?

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Friday, 22 September 2006 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

I wanted that brown jacket, D, but they only had the teal one in my size when I went there, so I got that one, and then next time I was at the store, they had all manner of brown ones:/

I got the green kick-pleat houndstooth skirt, which my mom thought was way too short. Oops.

Yeah, they had a medium that fit at the store; so is it not hideous (the gold jacket)? I've gotten so used to shopping at Target, I now cringe when I am in greeted in regular stores. I'm much more at home shopping among the moms with babies in strollers.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Moms thinking skirts are too short=best reason to buy of course.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

I was so delighted with how preppy it was that I neglected to notice that it failed to cover my thighs. Perhaps I was not the best person to advice Q on her minidress purchase after all :/

Mary (Mary), Friday, 22 September 2006 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure it's all right! I like that skirt but feel like I can't wear as it looks ridiculously short on me
