Brad Pittt makes gay wedding pledge
Mon 11 Sep 4:00 PM

Brad Pitt says he'll only marry Angelina Jolie when all gay couples in the US can legally tie the knot.

The announcement is sure to have wedding-hungry gossip magazines campaigning for gay rights across America - where civil partnerships/gay marriages are only legal in two states.

Brad told Esquire magazine: "Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able."

The Ocean's Thirteen actor currently lives with Angelina and their three children, four-month-old Shiloh, Maddox, five, and Zahara, 18 months. Speculation about their nuptials has been rife ever since Brad dumped his wife Jennifer Aniston in favour of Tomb Raider star Angelina - and their eventual wedding would be the A-list event of the year.

Brad also revealed that he doesn't treat his adopted children, Maddox and Zahara, any differently to his first-born, Shiloh, explaining: "They're as much of my blood as any natural born, and I'm theirs. That's all I can say about it.

"I can't live without them. So, anyone considering adoption, that's my vote."

At first I thought of making some quirky joke, but then I realized I'm not cynical enough for that, so I'm actually gonna laud Pitt - who, as far as I know, has little personal gain in making such a statement - for taking a stance.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

little personal gain? it's an excuse not to marry

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I'm just a big cynic, but I don't buy it at all. When Twonsend and Theron made the same declaration I rolled my eyes a bit.

cutty otm. I doubt they actually care about gay issues.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

xpost cynical much?

It's a tough personal stand to take but I admire people who take it. who needs marriage anyway?

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

My wife, for one. Me, for another.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

How is it a tough personal stand to take?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

Because two people in love would normally want to get married?

o. nate (onate), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

uh, what?

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

How is it a tough personal stand to take?

It's easy to support something with words but a lot harder to do so with action esp. when the issue at hand is somewhat removed from your own personal life.

I would love to be able to take the same stand but can't promise my ideals wouldn't fall by the wayside if the urge/need to marry presented itself.

Dan, I certainly don't see retroactive activism on anyone's agenda here.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

Judging by his language ("we will CONSIDER tying the knot..."), it doesn't seem to me that Brad has an extreme urge to get married.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Brad Pitt, Progressive Bachelor

g00blar (gooblar), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

I doubt it is a difficult stance to assume for an A-list celebrity with enough cash to make Croesus blush.

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

I say good on 'em... the more highly visible public figures calling bullshit, the better.

Do I consider it huge sacrifice for Brad & Angelina? Not so much.

Will (will), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

OMG! This either means Brad is really a girl or Angelina is a boy! :O

StanM (StanM), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

Dan, I certainly don't see retroactive activism on anyone's agenda here.

Um, what? Why is this addressed to me?

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

I will only marry when I can forget Jennifer Aniston.

In a gentle way...

a.b. (alanbanana), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

I'm wondering what Brad Pitt's bank balance has to do with anything?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

You like 'em bony, Doc?

milo z (mlp), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

I'm wondering what Brad Pitt's bank balance has to do with anything?

1) tax & insurance benefits normally derived from married status are negligible
2) can hire fancy family lawyers to assist with adoption process (& whatever else)
and
3) the fabulously wealthy do not love like plebes do

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Really, does anyone actually marry for tax breaks rather than love? I hate the world :-(

(also, I note this principle didn't stop him marrying Jennifer Aniston)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

Jennifer Aniston is a lady.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

I just have sooo much respect for the man. [holds hands apart to indicate the amount of respect accorded to the man]

DO NOT WANT

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

Thinking about it more, I actually find this to be kind of patronizing.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

what is more ridiculous:
a) the idea that people would care to ask when Brad is going to marry Angelina or some other celeb already
or
b) this particular answer?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Not that I hold Brad Pitt on any particular pedestal, but it seems a reasonable enough stance to take. I've decided before that if if I were the marryin' kind (I thank the lord I'm not so), I would make the same type of pledge. If you actually take the stance that no gay marriage equals a serious civil discrimination, then isn't getting married sort of like, I dunno, being a white guy and eating at a segregated lunch counter? If you're not part of the solution etc. etc.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

this "pledge" serves his own interests more than it serves the interests of gays that wanna get married, gimme a break.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

how does anyone refusing to get married further the cause of gays getting married

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

OMG nobody's getting married anymore! Flower sales are down 95%! No one's buying wedding dresses! Quick, lets marry some queers and save the economy!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

Intellectually, I agree with the stance. However, if I were to suggest to my wife that we get divorced as a sign of protest, not only would she kill me, but her lesbian sister and her partner would also kill me.

(xpost: Oh for fuck's sake, Shakey, let dude do something well-meaning and harmless.)

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

Dan Savage has been giving "why can't we marry already" in response to every letter in his column for weeks. I wonder if he'll mention this when his new one comes out on Wednesday.

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

it is well-meaning and hamrless, but also kinda ridiculous that anyone would take it seriously as a political "statement".

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

what personal "interests" is the dude trying to protect (other than privacy)? he's Brad Pitt! he can pretty much have anything he wants (except privacy)!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: which we all were doing, obv.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, really; when it comes to empty political statements, which is easier to make fun of:

Celeb #1: "I won't consider remarrying until gay marriages are recognized by our government."

Celeb #2: "I am going to live in a tree to protest deforestation."

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

"what personal "interests" is the dude trying to protect (other than privacy)?"

there are a lot of financial incentives for a bazillionaire celebrity to not get married. Avoiding going through an expensive divorce being the main one. And now he has a handy-dandy media-ready excuse!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

I find this quite touching, in a slightly barmy kind of way. You are all cynics.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

the only thing this "excuse"s him from is having to deal with another bullshit tabloid/interview question.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, DARRYL HANNAH TRIED TO LIVE IN A TREE! THAT IS AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE SILLIER THAN THIS! PERSPECTIVE!

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

that too.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

It's weird how some people don't know that celebrities, by and large, don't exactly put the same value on marriage that we do.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost to Dan)

It may be silly but I think it's a more valid and geniune act of protest than this.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

It's weird how some people don't know that celebrities, by and large, don't exactly put the same value on marriage that we do.

I wish someone would've told me that before I married one! Fucking christ.

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

that "we" do

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

It may be silly but I think it's a more valid and geniune act of protest than this.

It's just as pointless an act as this, only it has the added bonus of being completely unsustainable.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

(btw I am FURIOUS that I apparently cannot find a pic of DH in a tree on GIS)

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

"I'm Brad Pitt, millions of women know of me and wish to be with me. Why would I get married to one woman when I could eventually have sex with the other million that are dying to sleep with me there's so much social injustice in this world? I'm also going to have to think hard about paying her alimony too. I mean, all people do is sympathize with and fund unwed mothers...but where's the love and compensation for unwed fathers? I mean that's legislating discrimination right there. Compensating one sex and not the other. But what can I, Brad Pitt, do about it? Well it may not be much, but if shacking up, refusing marriage and maybe one day refusing to pay alimony sheds a little light on contemporary bigotry and social injustice *sigh* then Brad Pitt is going to have stand up for truth, justice and the American way."

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

it's weird how people don't know that celebrities don't put the same value on child-rearing that we do. oh wait...

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

I would tell Shakey and Cunga to go marry each other but society won't allow it :-(

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 September 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)
