skinny jeans on men

seriously this trend needs to die right now.

it really is one of the most unflattering looks ever, i cannot begin to imagine why anyone would put themselves through a fashion which looks ludicrously painful for so little reward. it makes boys' legs look like twigs.

it's especially horrific when teamed with big, messy hair (makes wearer look like a tree) or pointy shoes (!!!! words are not sufficient to capture the utter ghastliness of this).

and the thing is hardly anyone looks comfortable in them! no one seems particularly confident that this look suits them, it's all very try-hard and desperate. and yet it seems to be spreading, every day i see more and more boys like this.

disgusting.

Russell Brand must die.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

Russell Brand as a style icon must die. As a "personality" he seems okay. (This does not necessarily mean he has a nice personality, although I've never met the fellow.)

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

yes, definitely, with all due haste. xp

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'da thought it'd be right up your alley masonicboom. Sounds all filthy and DDB-ish...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

fashion trends rarely infuriate me, and god knows there have been many silly ones, but this seems so idiotic. i find myself wanting to tear all tight jeans off their wearers' legs, and not in the good way.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

I can't stand Russell Brand, he makes my skin crawl.

Thing is, I don't mind that tight jeans, pointed boots, messy hair thing on *actual* DDBs. But as a fashion statement, it freaking blows.

Cause, you know, I might actually *hit* on one by mistake, thinking that I could talk to them about the JAMC or the Velvet Underground, when in truth they're just doing it because Dior Por Homme or whoever told them to. Ugh.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

That beltbuckle resting on the pubis and half the undercrackers showing was a bit eurgh. Esp when they'd sit down and it'd billow up like some kind of Elizbethan doublet thingy (I mean the shorts they wore over tights).

Masonicboom You could always smell em, if they smell like gel: poseur. If it's greasy and nasty: DDB. This is a theory. Might be more embarrassing getting caught out sniffing them than scoffing at them...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

tight jeans also make me wonder just how small the wearers' cocks are.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the nice thing about tight jeans, is you can see the merchandise on display!

(Unless of course, as in Bobby G's case, it is a SOCK.)

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

but that's the thing, you usually can't see any merchandise!

and if you can its appeal is v much cancelled out by the TWIG LEGS YUCK.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

is there anything fashionable that women wear that people could object to in the same way?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

I thought they were girls jeans or am I wrong? I figured that if that was so then there's probably all manner of lycra etc. I just think that they look so very cramped if ya get me...

THOSE FUCKING SHORTS WITH HIGH HEELS AND OPAQUE TIGHTS!!!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

City shorts and patterned tights, together. No no no no no.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

tulip skirts, tiered skirts, yuck

Ed (dali), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

yes! Tulip skirts and bubble skirts, die die die.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Thursday, 5 October 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

jeans down past buttcrack & thong on display.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:05 (nineteen years ago)

Savage. Thanks jed_ (belated happy bday btw).

BALLET PUMPS!!! No reason really, just they look really dangerous near someone as clodfooted and badly coordinated as me!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

the look was *invented* by passive men in american prisons i believe.

i shall inform the chaps at the back of the 106 to Whitechapel of this stunning revelation and be sure to come back here with details of their reaction.

From t'other thread. I ROFL'ed sad to say...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

is there anything fashionable that women wear that people could object to in the same way?

What is the correct way to make fun of girls wearing hip-huggers?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

I've clocked a few lassies around Glasgow with a similar look - tight jeans or what appear to be leggings and flat shoes (some also with those palestinian-styled scarves). A bit like that shop-lifting Geldof one.

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think anyone can get away with it. It worries me. Just like those awful 80s tops with the pyramid sleeves that you scrunch up.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

jeans down past buttcrack & thong on display.

ha ha, i always assume this is unintentional

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

Hiphuggers are passe, no?

it's especially horrific when teamed with big, messy hair (makes wearer look like a tree) or pointy shoes (!!!! words are not sufficient to capture the utter ghastliness of this).

And too short t-shirt so you can see their tiny fuzzy body hair which they put on display cause they can't grow any facial hair. Mind you, they're being silly thinking it's a dud (no facial hair) cause it ROCKS. (So does a little facial hair...)

tight jeans or what appear to be leggings and flat shoes

Kate Moss is the culprit. I do think that it is only tolerable if you are superskinny. Otherwise superdud.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

As a woman, skinny jeans aren't as icky to me as the hip hop baggy type. I like the package-on-view factor and the fact that it's not...... well..... hip hop influenced, like just about every other style trend in mall America right now.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Thursday, 5 October 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

Christ, I never thought I'd agree with The Lex on anything but: The Lex OTM.

Time for an ILX break perhaps :)

Personally I could really live with the jeans if people looked a bit tidier for no other reason than as someone with floppy straight hair that does NOTHING no matter how hard I try/threaten it I am consumed with jealousy at these curly haired lads who can look all shaggy and fun. Bastards. At least I've got nicer knees!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 5 October 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

you guys are nuts. i LOVE guys in skinny/tight jeans. all toothpick legs with pelvic bones like cutlasses.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 5 October 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

See, I agree, Emily. On DDBs, it is appropriate. On fashion victims, however, it is not.

After all...

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Thursday, 5 October 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

I appreciate your point, re: fashion victims causing confusion and annoyance (after all, I have experienced it myself when suddenly everyone was wearing ties and I became inexplicably fashionable - "guh, buh, wuh, uh, fuck off," was, I believe, my reaction). But still, are you saying it is bad in general but good when DDBs do it? Or are you saying it is good in general but bad when FVs do it?

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 5 October 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

as long as there's SOME ass and the wearer is under 30...

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 5 October 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, after all, men in jodhpurs and boots is the ultimate rorw here:

?
you mean like khakis with creases down the front or something? why not just normal pants? (or baggy even)

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Thursday, 5 October 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

jodhpurs. holy crap.

On women, even better. I could so rock this look:

With go-faster stripes to eliminate saddlebags! (On you, not on your mount.)

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Thursday, 5 October 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 5 October 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

I am wearing a pair of skinny jeans right now!

not quite as tight as some I have seen tho...

they aren't really any less comfortable than other jeans.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 October 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

I think there's something U&K about a little ease around the ankles -- this is what makes stovepipe trousers + Beatle boots look AWESOME and indie-fop skinny jeans look kind of lame. Also, the tight tight punk thing requires that the wearer be extra hard to pull it off.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 5 October 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

I think it looks quite good on men who are skinny, but for someone like me who is of an average size it would just make me look fat. So all you "normal" sized guys out there, stop wearing skinny jeans!

When it comes to women I'm actually quite fond of sorta chubby girls who wear jeans that are way too tight for them.

kinda whimsical and over the top when worn by super skinny teenagers - contrived and embarrassing when worn by anyone who's even marginally an adult or of average or greater weight.

I hated the skousers look (skirt over trousers). Me and Emsk's friend Val used to wear them all the time in 1998 and it was ridiculous. As a long legged girl, I like wearing my skinny with boots and I always get complements when I'm rocking that look, as long as I'm wearing a top that's long enough. Not to sound too Grazia but muffin tops look horrendous, yet v.easy to achieve. Men in skinny jeans - I quite likey, better than baggy chinos or flares, but I do have a thing for low slung indie-y, skater-y jeans with boxers showing

Those!

muffin tops

They the jumpers with the scrunchy sleeves and ridiculous v neck? The low slung jeans requires too much effort/starvation! My gut makes them hipsters for better or worse...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 6 October 2006 06:44 (nineteen years ago)

muffin top = when a lady ( I assume it is just a lady?) wears tight jeans with a cropped top, and her midriff fat sort of bulges over the top of the waistband like muffin dough bulging out of the paper case.

Mark Co (Markco), Friday, 6 October 2006 07:37 (nineteen years ago)

Oooooh. Good phrase...

Another bad fashion thing here: Baggy grey sweatpants, waistband folded over, tucked in to folded down ugg boots. Top off with bottle blonde hair, fake tan and gold jewellery. Yeeeeurgggh...

Rugby tops with collars folded up = WTF!? YOU LOOK LIKE A TWAT!!! Even worse: Wearing dubarrys or a similar style loafer with chinos and the rugby top as described above. Wankers. I'm off to watch Leinster v. Munster tonight and I know I'm just going to be surrounded by the two groups I've just ranted against!

A bulge is mildly erotic. Seeing some indie kid's studenty manky grey knickers hanging out of their trousers is a total harshbuzz to my clit-on.

when i first moved to america in '76 in so, one of the first things i remember seeing (one of hundreds of "first things" mind), plastered up in the window of a record store, was a picture of the ramones, on the cover of their 1st LP, in skinny jeans, kicks, t-shirts and biker jackets. i was so fucking impressed. it instantly became clear to me, at age 9, that THAT was how a person should look. i've wavered a bit in pursuit of that vision, drifted with the times and never been as slender as a ramone, but still it glows. there is no single style for a dude that looks half so effortlessly cool as skinny jeans & a slouch.

I think they're ready to come back! I just watched The Langoliers on SyFy last night and the missus and I were musing about how - as bad as all the 80s revivalism of the '00s was, if 1995 gets revived anytime in the '10s, it will be the end times for sure.
