lauren turned me on to an amazing cart with thai noodles and fish balls on canal. i think it may be the shuttered one sexyD is referencing.

this looks interesting:

used to be amazing stalls underneath manhattan bridge on e. broadway but health dept. shut them down, too - i bet that's the right part of town to poke around in though, esp. EAST of bowery

delancey, not canal. and he's back! for a while he was gone and then he was just selling drinks (and looking very sad), but now he's back with the fish balls (regular, curry, and with pork skin/radish). they're very tasty and cheap - $1 per order. unfortunately, he no longer has rice noodle rolls or curry squid.

there were still quite a few food stalls/carts in that area when i was last poking around. a lot of them are clustered around the fruit/veg market that runs along the base of the manhattan bridge where forsyth dead-ends. fyi, if you ever need like 4lbs of (slightly banged up) yams for $1 then that's your spot.

man, i used to spend a lot of time right there. that was another life. that's cool that the stalls etc. have returned. there used to be a whole little shanty town of them tucked up underneath the bridge, across from that weird 1960s-era club-looking building on e. broadway/forsyth
