I drink a cup of gank at breakfast dinner and tea.

I also have a big dessert spoon of sweeter gank....

One tastes like tea, the other like licquorice.

I feel......THE SAME. But it's only been two days.

Anyone have any faith in the logic of herbalism?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

I thought gank = crack cocaine? I don't think I'd feel the same after a big dessert spoonful of that.

ONIMO's losing the plot (GerryNemo), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

I thought that would be "gack", gank to me just means a generally rank substance

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 2 November 2006 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

gak = non crack coke

(I think. I don't use the stuff! I still have a septum!)

When somebody's having a heart attack on a plane, the flight crew never ask if there's a herbalist on board.

"Good god, this man has a life-threatening deficiency of antioxidants!"

"From the looks of it, his free radicals are out of control! Probably isn't getting enough natural enzymes in his food"

I'm sure there are some herbs that have some chemicals that act on the body - but I think its mostly placebo and symbollic thinking. "What comes from plants is good"

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Thursday, 2 November 2006 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

I've just started going to this homeopathic chiropractor for my sinuses (seriously), and she's just put me on this PRIMAL DEFENSE priobiotic stuff, and I felt better this morning (I just went yesterday and obtained the stuff). I'm back to feeling like crap again though, due to this nasty stomach bug I seem to have obtained.

do homeopathic chiripractors use science?

No, just quackery.

I have run the gamut of other sinus treatments, and decided to go hippy, because, well, why the hell not? My allergy test consisted of me laying on my back, holding a bottle of whatever, and having my chiropractor press down on my arm, while I tried to keep it steady. It was bizarre.

I haven't been put on any fancy teas yet. That's next week, I reckon.

Mind you, she does the proper cracking that I guess a normal chiropractor does. My neck is apparently fucked, which could be causing my migraines and may be giving me sinus problems. I've been there twice in the course of 3 weeks, and I definitely see an improvement.

molly d (mollyd), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

what's wrong with your sinuses?

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

They're fucked, essentially. Well, it could be worse. They're incredibly sensitive to weather changes and allergens. They then form a vacuum and cause migraines which leave me useless and ill for at least a day or two.

molly d (mollyd), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

Big dud. There are herbs with potent effects, but the extracts are used in ordinary medicines anyway if they work and aren't too dangerous. You could get those from a herbalist aswell, but I'd trust a doctor with a medical degree to make the decision about what powerful substances end up in my body rather than a homeopath/herbalist who doesn't need any medical qualifications to give the stuff out.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Thursday, 2 November 2006 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

Having gone through a fairly painful surgery and various prescriptions from MDs, that all failed to work and gave me awful side effects, I'll take whatever works, even if they are hippy herbs given out by an homeopath / herbalist.

molly d (mollyd), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

why do they form a vacuum? do they get infected or something

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

They swell up when irritated. It's gross. I used to get sinus infections at least once a month (see aforementioned surgery post). That was no fun either.

molly d (mollyd), Thursday, 2 November 2006 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

I've turned back UTIs with herbal/alternative methods—d-Mannose powder in water along with cranberry-based supplements. It takes a little longer than antibiotics and you have to use twice as much d-Mannose as they recommend, but in my experience the infection stays gone longer than it does with antibiotics. If you get chronic UTIs you really need to explore alternatives, as repeated courses of Cipro are ruinous. Not to mention how pissed off you get when some medical professional asks you for the 99th time if you wipe from front to back.
NO MA'AM. I ALWAYS MAKE AN EFFORT TO SMEAR AS MUCH SHIT IN MY PEE-HOLE AS POSSIBLE. ARE YOU TELLING ME THIS IS WRONG????? IN ALL MY FIFTY YEARS, I NEVER KNEW!!!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 3 November 2006 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

cranberry is u&k if you have probs with UTIs. i don't want to go on antibiotics and then get a whole new infection thanks to the antibiotics killing good bacteria, grrrr.

but the extracts are used in ordinary medicines anyway if they work and aren't too dangerous.

um, not if you live in the US. there are herbal extracts that work for various things, but other than aspirin, there's not much that's used that was orig derived from plant/animal sources. i remember reading somewhere that it's common practice in italy for a patient to be prescribed fish oil after having a heart attack--US docs never know about all that sort of thing.

i saw an herbalist at one point when i had bad knee probs--in retrospect i wasn't having as much difficulty with pain when climbing stairs and such, but the nasty teas were so foul i gave up on them.

there is lots of quackery in herbal medicine/alternative medicine, but given my extensive experience with regular doctors, sometimes i think the alterno-hippies have almost as much to offer.

Juulia (julesbdules), Friday, 3 November 2006 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I'm sorry but ROFL at people with so much faith in conventional medicine...try getting actually sick where you see double figure amount of doctors and have operations and still feel absolutely shit and then tell me how fucking great conventional medicine is

I mean, I don't VEHEMENTLY believe herbalism will make my sinuses feel better, I don't even believe it will at all really...but I'm willing to give it a chance cos the herbalist in question is of very good repute here, and cos even if I thought herbalism was a waste of money and just a random fucking stab in the dark that would only be as little as I think of medicine right now...

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

also it may astound people to know that when conventional stuff has failed you don't just give up on your health and think "oh well nothing will help me now! conventional medicine has failed. fuck it I'll be fine! I'll just systematically transmogrify from being a normal healthy person into being permanently and incurably sick, should only take a few hours, pass me my slippers and the remote control"

you try ANYTHING, because you have to pretend to have even a sliver of hope and also to stave off clueless fuckwits who treat long term illness like it's a hobby you've taken up.....

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

Ronan, OTM. I completely agree. When conventional medicine doesn't work, what's the harm in trying something else? The whole conventional medicine racket hasn't done me that much good. Why should I have that much faith in it?

I'm allergic to almost every antibiotic under the sun, and when I do find one that doesn't make me vomit, or give me hives, I end up getting infections of various other sorts. It's ridiculous.

I've been using this stuff, as per my homeopathic chiropractor, for my allergies / sinuses, and it's done me a world of good. Hands down, ten times better than any Flonase or prescription nose spray. It's amazing for that feeling when your nasal passages start swelling up and you feel the pounding sinus pain coming on.

molly d (mollyd), Friday, 3 November 2006 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

I can certainly couch for things like valerian tea, it knocks me right out to sleep.
