I like you even though you are an asshole

It's weird how some people are assholes but I like them anyway, maybe even because of their assholeness. Maybe it stems from a begrudging respect or some such reason.

I'm down with Tiger, Atrios and esp. Feinstein. Also Howard Chaykin (esp. since my wife got to satisfy her soul by chewing him out).

the starbucks in the forbidden city (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

I know & like lots of assholes in real life, to meet up and drink with etc, though sometimes they try to transcend the 'asshole drunk pal' role and (examples from this week) a) ask to come round to my flat & do something on my computer, and b) be flatmates with my girlfriend, in which case I a) say "yeah, sure" and do not reply to their calls for a few days, and b) side naturally with girlfriend totally while thinking, "Haha, you should try living with me!"

Bukowski and Burroughs I agree with (and maybe slightly Steve Albini), but I can't see anything much to redeem the assholishness of any of the others. And there needs to be something other than their status of being assholes to make them attractive to you, surely? Or are you saying they're worthy of respect purely because they're assholes? In which case, there are bigger assholes out there.

Marmot, yeah, that's what I was thinking. And I didn't read yours properly, as truth be told I agree with almost all of those. But in the initial list most of them seemed to be fairly pointless people (okay, I'll accept sporting types to some degree, as I can appreciate why some folk are into them, even if I'm not).

You know, I used to think Jeter was an asshole - Yankee prettyboy, always winning championships, teflon reputation - but, upon Cal Ripken's first game off after breaking Lou Gherig's streak, Jeter led the Yankees in a standing ovation for Cal. Showing respect for THE prototypical power hitting shortstop. So, not an asshole. Still a Yankee, but not an asshole.

lance armstrong and derek jeter are assholes?!?

Good lord, how can you miss that? I know it's silly but I fucking hate that guy so much.

I just had to explain to my friend the appeal of Robbie Williams. In vain I tried to explain how GR34T he is. But she couldn't understand that it's vicarious enjoyment of a hedonistic life. The guy doesn't give a tosser, he just lives his life. You know he's an asshole (and tortured) but because he enjoys life (and drugs and sex and all things naughty) you sort of feel jealous. He's forever a 15 yr old.

Haha, I've never thought that deeply about it. Basically, he's the living personification of smug, yet I can't help but like him. I don't think of him as tortured so much as just a total wanker.
