For fans of "The Band", either the A
Musical History
box set or recently released From
Bacon Fat to Judgement Day
would be great to find under the tree.

I like your idea, Ed, you've got me thinking. My mum wants ipod speakers but there seem to be like £10 ones and £200 ones and I really can't tell what level she needs. I guess I should just spend as much as I want to spend and see what I can get for it.

The most useful thing I got last year was a promotional item given away by a collegue's IT company: a USB stick.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 11 November 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

It's getting towards the end of the pickling and preserving season but there are still lots of apples for making chutney and there's always lemons, although they are still coming in from South Africa at this time of year and its better to wait for the Sicilian and Campanian ones which should be coming in very soon.

The Logitech ones are good.
I have one of those annoying brothers who basically can buy anything in the world that he wants, so I have to get him things that he didn't even know he wanted. I don't know what those things could be.

My dad is like that, luckily when I was 12 I got him into collecting travel guides and travel writing from before 1950 and I have more time than him to hand about in second hand bookshop, consequently I'm always on the lookout and drip feed him what i find over the course of the year for birthday christmas, father's day etc.

Ed, I have With the World's Great Travelers (Chicago, 1905; 8 volumes; Morris & Leigh, editors) and the Burton Holmes Travelogues (Chicago/NY, 1917; 13 volumes) that I've been thinking about selling, if you're interested.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

How much do you want to spend on the younger ones? Every kid needs Brio in their lives.

Ed (dali), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

i've always thought those cardboard type books with hidden flaps were good gifts for really little kids. maybe they're not very cool these days, but reading is good!

Anyone shopping in the UK for xmas presents online might want to use this link

http://www.buy.at/efc

Education for choice is a sexual health education charity a friend of mine works for and through various tore affiliates programmes they are getting money for people doing their xmas shopping through clicking through to commonly used online store from this site.

(Wanted one for house, but ceiling is lumpy)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

I've already made jars of vodka-chilli cherry tomatoes, and jars of preserved lemons (thanks for that recipe, Ed!) as small gifts for various foodie-friends.

I bought a load of pretty floral Cath Kidston material off ebay last week, and I'm busy making that into an assortment of gifts for my daughters' schoolfriends, such as

pocket tissue-pack covers like this :

and fabric covered message/photo boards, like this :

A friend of mine likes wine (but isn't any kind of expert) so I got one of those wooden wine crates from Oddbins or wherever, and packed it up with a few half-sized bottles of various nice wines, a couple of crystal wine glasses, and a wine book. It's only the Richard & Judy wine guide, but it's actually quite a nice looking and informative book.

I bought a couple of colanders which look like this:

http://www.steelwares.in/gifs/kw-01114.jpg

which were only £1 each in Poundland!! and I shall fill those with some small pots of home-grown basil and oregano, some nice pasta, a small bottle of truffle oil, and maybe a few of my favourite printed-out Italian recipes. One's for a friend, and one for my mother-in-law.

I've bought one of those outward bound adventure weeks with Ray Mears for my fella, and I've packaged up the gift certificate for it with the Ray Mears book and some stuff such as a tin of Maya dust and a survival fire-starter, a maglite and a leatherman knife.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)
