I am unpumped.

I'm waiting for the razzies! Nominations here: http://razzies.com/asp/content/XcNewsPlus.asp?cmd=view&articleid=51

Calumn, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I HATE the Oscars. I don't take them remotely seriously as a measure of anything. They are stupid.

DV, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They are the gay mens superbowl , a camp explosion of melodrama and bad outfits

anthony, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You have to love them if only for The Cher Appearance.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

13 nominations for LOTR!

mms, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark s, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always wondered what Mark S. would look like if he was purple.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hope Gosford Park wins nothing and Robert Altman goes back home and rethinks his gameplan.

alix, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't know Ned was on the nominating committee!

There's more about this fan than meets the eye.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MMm mmph mmmh mmpp mm mhmhpp mppmm mmmmp mpmm mmmmpppmm!!

mark s, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't believe Jimmy Neutron was nominated for best animated feature, Waking Life was far more visually interesting even though the plot and dialogue = pile of poo.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Then again it's not like you should expect quality nominations...

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think two winners are obvious: Beautiful Mind for best pic and Shrek for best animated.

Samantha, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've heard that "A Beautiful Mind" is amazing and all, but I will be ripshit if (when?) "FOTR" doesn't win.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shrek winning (and it will) = colossal travesty - a more cloying film I cannot remember seeing.

Tom, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A more cloying film? Have you seen The Fisher King? Patch Adams?

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

shrek = worst movie of 2001. and i saw 'american pie 2' AND 'evolution.'

maura, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is Gosford Park that awful? I quite fancied seeing it.

chris, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There were people that saw Evolution?

From a technical standpoint Shrek is nice, but PDI still isn't a patch on Pixar.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I liked Gosford Park quite a bit -- more focused and emotionally loaded than most Altman, like he can juggle his characters as usual but with a point.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I havent seen either the Fisher King or Patch Adams no. What kind of mentalist do you take me for Alan that you think I would willingly go and see Patch Adams?

(Answer: The sort of person who would willingly go and see Curly Sue. Damn.)

Tom, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SHREK = DONKEY = SIR MIX A LOT = GRATE!

i like big butts!, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As a computer geek, I have to say that the sheer level of detail in the animation of "Shrek" overshadows any deficiencies in the storyline for me. Then again, I thought "American Pie 2" was funny, so factor that into my previous comment.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I rather liked Gosford Park too, possibly because I am in a bit of an Altman mood at the moment post Bombay wedding and seeing Cookie's Fortune again on TV (where it seemed to make a lot more sense). Very, very gentle movie with another good Clive Owen performance.

That said it won't win any Oscars, though it would be extremely funny if it won the best Production Design Oscar considering the films it is up against.

Is it another mental illness/disability year?

Pete, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, you caught me :-) I haven't seen Patch Adams either. I cried lots in Mrs Doubtfire though (= divorced parents)

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They are the gay mens superbowl , a camp explosion of melodrama and bad outfits

I am 100% heterosexual and have no issues whatsoever with my sexuality. However, I also hate the superbowl and indeed all sporting events.

DV, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what on earth is wrong with the fisher king??

ethan, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, for one, that it was Robin Williams' wife killed and not him.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sorry but Moulin Rouge is bullshit. I couldn't even finish watching it, and I think that's the first time in history I haven't sat thru an entire movie.

Oh, and Waking Life, no matter how visually interesting it is, isn't an overall good film. I don't care what technical display a director puts forth - I mean you wouldn't complain if a directorially great live action film with a horrible cast, dialog and plot wasn't nominated, what's the difference in animation? No comment on the worth of Jimmy Neutron, but quite frankly I'm 100% certain it's better than Waking Life.

Ally, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was pumped (as every year). I was gonna start a thread. But I couldn't get onto ILE grrr.

In the event - well, it's not a bad list. 13 noms for LOTR seems a bit OTT but I can't really fault any one of them. Looks like it's a straight fight between this and A Beautiful Mind (which I haven't seen yet but will this weekend) for the best picture award. Moulin Rouge was the worst movie of 2001 - deserves nothing but I won't begrudge Kidman a win. Best Actor looks wide open - they won't want to give it Russell Crowe twice in a row, surely? He probably starts favourite, nonetheless.

Pleased to see Lynch getting a nomination. The least MD deserves.

What the fuck is Ethan Hawke doing on the list?

Jeff W, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about best song then, eh? Where does the FT mafia (sorry) stand on this? Sting vs. Macca vs. Randy Newman vs. Enya vs. someone I've never heard of. Hmmm.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

YOU people , really it was kabuki , a fabulos [phantasma , a sylized melodrama that was amusing and tragic and busby berkely . IT WAS THE BEST AMERICAN MUSICAL SINCE DIAMONDS and frankly thats my third favorite film of all time . IMHO anviseary party was robbed , but i wasn't expecting it to win.

anthony, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Freddy Got Fingered was the best movie since Caddyshack.

Kris, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Which is why I've been wondering what you'd think of this.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Monsters Inc. is great.

jel, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

FGF & that class war prole art threat? Dave Q to thread!

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eleven months pass...
The Oscars are still of no relevence to anyone who actually likes films.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

or Awards Shows even.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

And are already being discussed here

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't care where they're being discussed, they're still shite.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)
