Roadrunning from Potterrow

Some random googling leads me to suspect various ilX-lurkers at one time frequented Edinburgh Uni's Friday night fun-fest that was Roadrunner. Will anyone admit to this? And might I remember you?

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Use the search function!

I think we covered most of this href="Am I allowed to plug the wee club thingy that I am starting up in Edinburgh this weekend?">here

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha my html skills suX0r.

alext (alext), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

Indeed, I saw this thread but am possibly too dense to work out who everyone was/is. Apart from Neil, that was obvious enough. Also, I am feeling curious - what does everyone do now?

As for me, well, I was Pete, Neil and Rich's flatmate and had successfully managed to erase my time at P'row from my memory, until last week. Bless.

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Are you Jude?

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

I had a boyfriend who was in his first year at Edinburgh in 1996 (those who know me and can do basic sums will know that this makes me a creepy old cradlesnatcher). I didn't know any of the rest of these Edinburgh Uni mentalists at that time, but I somehow know then all now. (You must know Keith though. Everyone knows Keith.)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

Well, if it is you, Jude then you should know me as we were sat next to each other in the pub about three weeks ago!

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

I had a boyfriend who was in his first year at Edinburgh in 1996

It wasn't me!!!

Everyone does know Keith, though. And I know alext by sight, although not to say hello to.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

You're right, it wasn't you. It's just occurred to me that you may know him as he was doing geology or something like that too.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

It's possible, although I don't think I knew many geologists.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I thought you were a geologist. Sorry. It might not have been geology. It was a long time ago. It was something geographical or earthy or something, tree-hugging freak that he was :-/

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

I was an archaeologist, but there was plenty of crossover between classes.

A friend of mine did environmental geoscience - he might have known him!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Hippy. Juggler. Levellers fan. (haha, what was I thinking?)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

He ... doesn't exactly sound very you!

Did he ever do fire juggling with the Beltane crowd? If so he probably knew my old boss.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, he did.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

Dear thread-starter, I am sorry for derailing your thread with gratuitous insults towards someone I was once rather fond of.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

I was Pete, Neil and Rich's flatmate and had successfully managed to erase my time at P'row from my memory, until last week. Bless

caroline?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 22 January 2007 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

i'm trying to think who else was in that flat. bloody hellfire. there were seven of you, weren't there? (unless you're meaning a different flat, and not the big one in the west end.)

neil
pete
rich
caroline

er
er ...
fuck, no, it's all very hazy.

are you the girl who poured a drink over me? can't remember what i'd done, but i know i upset you somehow. that was the same night that KT punched me in the face. and alext was almost sick on the stairs. happy days. or not.

jism. this is really going to irritate me now. go on, more clues ...

(nb: there are more than enough clues in this e-mail for you to figure out who i am. assuming you knew me at all ...)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 22 January 2007 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, on West Maitland Street... This is like a quiz show.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 08:49 (eighteen years ago)

not a very good one, though.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 09:06 (eighteen years ago)

That big flat on West Maitland St wasn't above a bank, was it? I think I might have known someone who lived there at one point, but I have completely forgotten her name.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 09:23 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think so, but I don't think it's a bank any more. I'm actually not sure. That flat was around there, but Jess lived around there too, and I've been to parties at both flats, so I might've been mixed up.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

It had become a branch of Boots before I left Edinburgh - back when it seemed like half the shops in Edinburgh were becoming either Boots or Starbucks.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 10:37 (eighteen years ago)

jess lived round the corner, didn't she? i remember being very drunk at a party there and trying to pull one of her flatmates. very ineptly.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

I am slightly insulted that I've been mistaken for someone who dated Colin. No, I'm not Caroline, nor am I Jude (although I was pals with Virtue, if that helps?). Mr Fiendish, I think I remember you - black hair, black beard, black clothes...slight look of a philosopher about you? I have vague memories of you insulting KT and me on a regular basis but I don't think I'd have done the drink-pouring. Unless I was very, very drunk? Alex T... yes, I remember an Alex T but not sure if he's the same one - wrote for Student? Cleverclogs? Often deeply drunk?

To help you out: my flatmates were:
Caroline
Pete
Rich
Neil
Damian and
Angel...

Anyone remember me? *waits in hope*

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

I've been to potterrow

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

...is there a punchline?

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

not yet

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

Has anything been built on the highlighted car-park yet?

(and according to the last alumni mag I bothered to read, they're going to build a garden on the library roof!)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

They've got four floors up of the new building already (mind you they've been building for a year now)
I've heard nothing about a library roof garden and I work in the building!

treefell (treefell), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

It was in the edition of Edit that arrived over Christmas - I've probably chucked it now. A big article on rebuilding the place, including displays on Sixth and a garden on the roof.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

The rebuild has started, I just hadn't heard about a roof garden.

treefell (treefell), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

Gosh, I hadn't even noticed and I drive past most days. The library was such a wonderous place - I spent four happy birthdays in the third floor oasis...

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

I had a job there - 2 hours a day refilling shelves in the Reserve and the Short Loan sections.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

I have a job near there

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

no punchline yet

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

To the tune of "I've Never Been to Me":

I've been to Potterow

But I've never been to KB

[the above is neither true nor funny, but will it do to be going on with?]

Harthill Services (Neil Willett), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

thanks to the mighty virtue (who may now, as i type, be lurking here; ey up, virtue) i now know who you are. hello! sorry, my once-mighty memory has slowly been erased by the drip-drip-drip effect of years of booze.

but i'm not spoiling it for anyone else, heh :)

Mr Fiendish, I think I remember you - black hair, black beard, black clothes...slight look of a philosopher about you?

most people would substitute "twat" for "philosopher". you're too kind.

Alex T... yes, I remember an Alex T but not sure if he's the same one - wrote for Student? Cleverclogs? Often deeply drunk?

oh yes. that's the one.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

So, did I throw a drink over you then? The story rings a very slight bell but I'm not sure if I was involved. So GV lurks here too? Well hello, and I hope you're well. I've lost touch with almost everyone I knew back then - not deliberately, honest. Whatever happened to Paddy? Remember him? I found some photos recently of him mauling KT. And Mr Fiendish, I do believe you're in a photo too, sitting in my flat chatting to Magnus(?), a flatmate of Virtue.

So, who are all the others here?

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

no, it wasn't you: it was one of jess's pals. she had red hair; this is all i can remember.

GV only began lurking here an hour ago, when he asked why i was ringing him in a state of agitation, asking about who lived in west maitland street circa 1995. he might already have fucked off. i hope he doesn't.

i remember magnus, yes! i'd like to see that photo. look around these parts hard enough and you'll find a picture of me as i was then, complete with appalling swirly coloured shirt.

paddy fucked off to poland, i think. but he might be back. keith will know better than i do.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

Emma? She was Jess's flatmate and had reddish hair. I wonder what you said/did?

Sadly, you and Magnus are background lurkers but I'll try to scan the snap for you. You must remind me who Keith is - my mind is completely blank. I asked Rich (my old flatmate) and all he could offer was "danced like a monkey". Like I can narrow that one down. By the way, are you the same GF as on Popbitch?

Poor Paddy. I remember he attempted to woo me with the line, "well, I haven't had it in a long time..."

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

I used to go to potterrow, i was a towny girl who got in for nothing thanks to the goodwill of T@nith and tried to find a danceable beat in the works of spacemen 3 and the fall, usually failing.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

There was always something very "minnie-the-minx" about the Mighty T, wasn't there?

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

heheheh. sort of, yes.

Emma? She was Jess's flatmate and had reddish hair. I wonder what you said/did?

i genuinely can't remember, but i think it was a typical alex-and-simon-aged-21 slight upon all womanhood. i do now remember what i said to KT, and i don't think i deserved to get chinned, given that it was quite funny. she disagreed, though. c'est la vie. i've pretty much lost touch with her, which is daft of me; i really should give her a call some time. she rocked mightily.

Sadly, you and Magnus are background lurkers but I'll try to scan the snap for you. You must remind me who Keith is - my mind is completely blank. I asked Rich (my old flatmate) and all he could offer was "danced like a monkey".

keith is our guru.

By the way, are you the same GF as on Popbitch?

no. that one's also a journalist, i believe, but gets better gossip than me.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

i think it was emma's friend - can't remember who - i tried to pull at their party. this is all coming back to me. i'm not entirely sure i want it to.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Simon, i may have some interesting information to impart soon, does your displayed email address work?

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

I have a feeling you remarked upon her bosoms... does that sound familiar? I think this was an incident she didn't forget in a hurry. I remember finding you funny but slightly terrifying, due to all that black. I think I remember Jess' party too: she'd a minibar in her bedroom which was full of teapots, didn't she? I miss her massively, would love to get back in touch. Is she still with Kev?

Alex was a lovely soul. What's he up to these days? And what are you up to? (And are others getting cross at how dull this thread is? Ah...)

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

This is like a reunion of the "so not gonna happen" guys in say 2012. It's a great thread.

So, Dolly, is that your real name?

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

Hardly. Mr Virtue?

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

Simon, i may have some interesting information to impart soon, does your displayed email address work?

intermittently. best to use the webmail link. or weesimon AT mac DOT com. i'm intrigued!

I have a feeling you remarked upon her bosoms... does that sound familiar?

[puts head in hands ...] it sounds plausible. oh god. there's a far more entertaining KT/alex/bosoms story, but i'll let him tell it himself, thus neatly taking the heat off me.

i remember finding you funny but slightly terrifying, due to all that black.

hmm :)

i don't remember much about jess's party, but what you describe does sound familiar. i was paralytically drunk, i do recall that. yes, as far as i know she's still with kev - at least, they were happily together when i last saw them (six months ago now). keith will no doubt be able to put you in touch! ah, i do like ILX on days like this.

Alex was a lovely soul. What's he up to these days? And what are you up to? (And are others getting cross at how dull this thread is? Ah...)

alex is posting replies up the top of this thread! he pretends to hate ILX but, like a bad penny/the terminator, he keeps coming back.

me: i'm a hack in glasgow (see sub-editing threads passim). as for what others think/potential parochiality of the thread: hey, this is NOTHING :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

It's a weird episode of happenstance that i don't particularly want to post on a public forum.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

I wasn't being a racialist, re the black, I promise. It was the slight nod to gothdom that alarmed me. Sounds like you're doing well though, even if you have to live in Glasgow ;-)

Did Keith look like one (or both) of Candy Flip?

Yes, I noted Alex's stern reply atop - hope he returns, even if it's just to remind me what he said to KT. I also have a vague memory of him saying/doing something to offend her - perhaps about NOT leering at her due to petite bosomage? That might have been Paddy, mind you.

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

heheh HEHEH it was very much what he did, not what he said. i don't think he was capable of speech.

gothdom. yes, sadly, there was a bit of that going on. still is, truth be told :/

keith: you might think that. i couldn't possibly comment.

anyway: what are YOU doing these days?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Haha! Candy Flip... Well, maybe.

I'm afraid I still haven't worked out who you are... But then, I don't feel so bad, because you don't remember me!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

Although I was at Jess' party and at one at your flat too.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/101/367152498_26b7331ac6_o.jpg

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and Jess is living with Kev in Morningside, yes.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

Candy Flip indeed - I remember you now - I think we shared a train journey once...?

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Where to?

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

um... from Glasgow...to Edinburgh? You alighted at Haymarket, if memory serves.

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

When I lived in Grove street?

Give me another clue!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

who did you live with? Jamie?

We didn't know each other very well - I think you were bailing out the P'Row Committee when I was a young pretender. I joined along with Caroline but I absolutely did NOT date Colin.

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I know who you are, though I did cheat.

No, I lived with Dave D probably at that time, or Emma if it was before perhaps.

Dunno what happened to Jamie, he was a good lad.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

You cheated? How on earth...? *looks over shoulder*

Poor Jamie - I have some photos of him too, eyes like saucers.

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

I texted s1mon.

Eyes like saucers, haha. If I could work out how to type that whooping, ravey noise you make two in a row of, I would.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

RJG, did you say you have a job near George square?

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

Mind boggles: "She's d sml 1 W brwn hair"

Urgh, I remember that ridiculous noise well. Wasn't he quite pally with that bingo caller - the one who barfed drunkenly into the ball-machine (causing a wonderful flurry of balls and spew)? Actually, I think he died so perhaps I shouldn't bring this up...

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

ooops - pun not intended :-(

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

Luke? If you are referring to Luke, I hope he didn't die... I did see him maybe 18 months ago.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

No, not Luke - I seem to remember I rather fancied him. I think this one was Luke's replacement?

Ah, time to go home now, thank god.

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

I have a job on bristo place but one I can do from glasgow

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

I see...

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

the one who barfed drunkenly into the ball-machine (causing a wonderful flurry of balls and spew)

thank FUCK i missed this.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

You're kidding? It sounds legendary!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

yeh, you might be right. sorry, i was having a shit day at work. from the comfort of my own home, it does sound rather more amusing. heheh.

i've got jamie's fucking noise stuck in my head too now, though :/

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

The image brought a smile to my face. I think I prefer the image that actually coming face to face with a whirling ball of vomit.

More proof that everyone in the world knows Keith, even people who don't know they do. My toppest moment of last year was meeting someone at our new journalistic lurker chum's birthday party who, within about 30 seconds of conversation, asked "so do you know Keith?" WHO WASN'T EVEN THERE AND HADN'T BEEN MENTIONED.

(actually it wasn't even the toppest moment of that night, but it was kind of good in a freaky kind of way)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

hang on, keith was there, wasn't he?

i'm sure he was.

wow.

keith: he's always in our hearts. or something.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

why is Keith so known now?

Dolly Bird (dollybird), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

He'd been in the pub earlier, but had definitely left before we got to the party thing. Urgh, now I'm having memories of black sambuca.

Keith is the centre of the indieverse. He puts himself about a bit.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

I don't even like indie! Well, I mean... I don't like any more indie than I like of anything else...

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

Err, so who was this, Ailsa?

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

I can't remember. Some friend of yours. It was on Grimly's birthday. I'm sure he's told you (and me) before, but I am crap with names of people I meet when I'm drunk and can remember little of.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Alex T... yes, I remember an Alex T but not sure if he's the same one - wrote for Student? Cleverclogs? Often deeply drunk?

This is possibly the best description of me ever! Sorry for being so grumpy when you started your thread -- I can't believe I didn't see that people had actually answered, even though I did tell Keith to scoot on over and have a look. I only found out yesterday in the pub that this conversation had happened! (My fault for working too hard to be able tos spend time hanging around ILX, now I have a job in the same university department where so many of us wasted so many formative years...) Anyway hello *****.

alext (alext), Saturday, 10 February 2007 08:26 (eighteen years ago)

working too hard to be able tos spend time hanging around ILX

Aye, right!

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 10 February 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

You got me! Did you stay out late last night?

BTW I managed to get hold of that Cars album this morning -- sounds great so far.

alext (alext), Saturday, 10 February 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

Stayed out 'til Berties shut... Was a good night. We need to fulfil our mission to go out some time and find a place to do a night...

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...
Alright... Alex and I are having a party on the 31st of March, and you're all invited. We will call it 'Alex Party':

http://keithmatthewwatson.googlepages.com/Poster.png

Keith, Thursday, 15 March 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Hey -- that club night sounds great, perhaps JW will try and hack it from a distance!

I fear we may be relying too much on the sheer force of our personalities to attract people...

byebyepride, Friday, 16 March 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

It's always worked in the past!

Keith, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

I'll pop my head round the door and say hello.

leigh, Friday, 16 March 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

yay! that's one down, the rest of the world to win over.

byebyepride, Saturday, 17 March 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

we should maybe post about this on --- g-----w ---- also.

byebyepride, Saturday, 17 March 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, suppose so.

Keith, Saturday, 17 March 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

Just a couple of days to Alex Party. I am excited. I hope you lot are.

Keith, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

yes. i have had to buy new trousers twice already today.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 29 March 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

Good stuff! I look forward to seeing your new trousers on Saturday!

Keith, Thursday, 29 March 2007 07:22 (eighteen years ago)

bump!

byebyepride, Thursday, 29 March 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)
