I wound up buying one of these at Staples:

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?prodCatType=2&storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=119352&cmArea=SC2:CG32:DP2156:CL161515

It's $150. It's got a slight resemblence to that fancypants Herman Miller Aeron Chair. It's very adjustable and goes pretty high, which were my two main concerns. I find it comfotable. It does feel a bit cheaply made though, like the kind of thing that will break in a few years.

My new office chair

Rebel.yell.For.Internet.cakes (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 January 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

The kind of chair you want is usually called a "task chair."

Apparently "Executive Chairs" are bigger and more comfy for leaning back. Hmm...

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 25 January 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

the transparent back is kinda weird but i am... intrigued. and the name "task chair" is... exciting.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 January 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

"task chair" sounds biblical.

Rebel.yell.For.Internet.cakes (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 January 2007 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

no, sorry. It actually doesn't.

i was just looking at a "global elite" chair. davos stylee/

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 January 2007 05:24 (eighteen years ago)

Folks out here prize the Herman Miller Aeron chair like solid gold. I doubt the knockoffs are as good, though.

Also if you need to sit up high consider a block 'neath yr feet so they're not dangling in the air, which can cause pain in the backs of your legs. Trust me, I'm a shortarse.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 25 January 2007 08:41 (eighteen years ago)

Man those Aerons are expensive - what's the thing about them? (Are they really that good or are they expensive because they're designer items?)

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 25 January 2007 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

The computer lab in the fancy new plant genetics building on my campus is filled with genuine aeron chairs even though you need a special key card to get in there and there's never more than one person in there at a time. Like 20 of those things that practically never get used! I've plotted all kinds of Mission Impossible plots to get one out of the building, but their security systems are equally evil-villain-like.

slocki, do you have access to a Sam's Club? I got this one there and love it. My wife coveted my chair so much I got her one of her own at Christmas. They're about $90.

I never actually thought the Aeron chair looked very nice, so I hope it's comfy.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 25 January 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

there was a great article written in like 2002 that investigated where all the Aeron chairs of the busted dotcoms went, once the companies were liquidated or bought by holding companies or whatever. the reporter actually found some giant warehouse somewhere with like 300 of them gathering dust.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 25 January 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

I have read this article, but I don't remember where! I am of no citation help.

Work just gave me an ergonomic consultation, because my chair was fucking up my shoulders. They recommended getting something with movable arm rests. My new chair has this, and it has helped my wrists / shoulders more than I could have possibly imagined.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 25 January 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Also, Trayce is OTM about the value of a footrest. They're not just for shorties.

I was going to recommend an Aeron until I read cheap-ish

They are indeed the best office chairs.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 25 January 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I had something with locking wheels though - my floors are slanted as fuck and it's killing my back.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 25 January 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

Man those Aerons are expensive - what's the thing about them?

The folks who adore 'em swear that they're super comfortable. I just use a relatively generic office chair with no complaints, so I can't really testify. More important to my personal ergo situ are 1. keyboard trays, 2. trackballs, and 3. monitor stands. Although, I could use a good footrest.

the aeron IS super super comfy. at this job i have an ok chair, not quite as nice. the one feature i wish it had from the aeron is the mesh seat/back; we keep the office pretty warm so i miss the ventilation.

trans pacific donkey cell phone (sleep), Thursday, 25 January 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

we just hired an intern and our director said highlight the aeron chair as one of the jobs benefits.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 25 January 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

I worked for a chap who had an aeron and it was fantastic. I used to swap chairs with him when he went out for the day but I could never get it to his customised position so it was a whole Three Bears thing when he got back, except he knew it was me so he'd say "Which fat bastard has been sitting in my chair?"

Edward Trifle (Ned Trifle IV), Thursday, 25 January 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah and they're easy to clean when you spill coffee over them I also discovered.

Edward Trifle (Ned Trifle IV), Thursday, 25 January 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

I started a thread like this once upon a time, too, after suffering horrible sciatica from prolonged sitting in a bad chair. I ended up getting a $300 Herman Miller knock-off from Office Max, and it's okay but rather wider than I like for my narrow butt. A friend of mine has a very generic $200 one from Staples and I like it more. It's snugger.

one is $215, and one is $180. It seems the extra 35 dollars is for seat- and back-angle adjustment capability. Crucial for comfort, or another widget that's gonna break?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

You know what's really really embarrassing about those staples.com links? When you click on them they ask you for a US zip code and the only one I can fill in because I know it is one is 90210 (and I've never even seen one episode of the damn thing!)...

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

We've got aerons at work. I like them, some people don't, but they're pretty damn sweet. I got a forwarded email before christmas from a friend who works for an office supplier and the discounted holiday price for their friends was $560 though, so no cheap deals to be had. If you're to the point where you can buy furniture you can keep forever, go for it.

mh. (mike h.), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

You can always use 10048 as the zip code, if you want to imagine people in Marketing trying to send catalogues to the World Trade Center.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

I got this yesterday and it beats the crap out of my last Aeron. The back has 4 tension levels. $700

lol me too (only i've seen hundreds)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

I have the exact same Steelcase chair! I love it! Mine only cost $400, though.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

does it have cradle to cradle certification?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 January 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

It does. It came with a little report card and everything (no, not really).

Mine is all black. I didn't have the option to get the fun colored seat. It's really a great chair. The back tension levels are wonderful, although I don't ever go past the 2nd setting. My back / shoulders / wrists thank me.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Friday, 26 January 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

I'm moving in the next couple of weeks and I need a chair for my computer desk in my new home. NONE of the chairs I've test-sat (at IKEA and other stores) have been comfortable AND nice to look at, so I'm thinking about one of those Miller chairs.

The Aeron is, well, I could afford it I suppose, but it just doesn't feel right to think that a chair would be the most expensive thing in the whole house (unless I win teh lottary - and I don't even play - and get me a €2500 HDTV) - What about the Celle (somewhat less expensive, but I don't like the way it looks) and (probably my favourite candidate, price- and design-wise) Mirra chairs from Herman Miller? Anyone be seating in one of those? Recommend/Destroy?

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 28 January 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

Too late, I ordered a Mirra. Finest chair I ever did sit on, yessir. Not very cheap (all in about 800 euro, a lot more expensive than in the US), but since that and my bed are the two places I'll be in most of the time, I thought "what the heck, if a chair this comfortable costs that much, then so be it"

StanM (StanM), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...
Got the Mirra yesterday (more than two months waiting period, wtf?) , and wow, it's even more comfortable than I remembered from that showroom.
