uh, find friends in the film business. lots of ways to accomplish that (including, but obv. not limited to, partying in LA, working as an entertainment journalist, working at a film festival and randomly emailing/facebooking directors/actors)

I did a script editing course a few years back, and got dribs and drabs of work from that. I could've used it as a springboard into the film business, but I decided I really didn't like the whole networking/arselicking side of the profession (which I'm sure is even worse in the US than it is here in London!). But if you did something like that and really went for it, I'm sure you could go far.
