I've set up a search page at freefind.com, which doesn't have the 500 page limit of Atomz (We've got 838 already). It should get updated every day. Either bookmark this link.

Or type here:

(DG, could you create an about page like the one on ILM and cut and paste the source from here?)

Graham, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Phew, that actually worked.

Graham, Monday, 6 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cool, does ILM have something like this? Cause I just posted a question there that had already been posted, as I was immediately informed by my robot companion.

maryann, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Graham -- could you setup a freefind search for ILM? I'd be happy to host it, if you wanted.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm *very* annoyed you didn't do me, Tom. Er, wait...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm leaving doing you to my brother, Ned.

Tom, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

james e l = 240
jel = 73
Not Bad! Cool!

jel, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if you want to see how many threads you've posted on, the best way is to search on your entire email address. Me = 198.

Nick, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me = 732. How did you spell Me?

Emma, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma, that is quite possibly the weakest joke I have ever seen on this board. I salute you.

Nick, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was all my weak brain could come up with.

Emma, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I find it odd that I have only contributed to 198 out of the 838 threads. I thought I had something useless to add to any conversation.

Nick, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I is on 837 threads. It's alright, I'm leaving now....

Emma, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In that case I get a score of 299. Not bad! Though why the stats cock post is my first listing, I don't know! Hmmmpphhh!

jel, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hm. The search box at the top doesn't work anymore.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Funny, works for me.

Graham, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't even search my name properly, thanks to Dastoor talking about Nicole Kidman all the time. Now my narcissm will never be satisfied.

Nicole, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Works for me too now. It didn't when Tracer posted, though, but it worked last week, so I guess Tracer picked a bad day to do it.

Nicole, you probably realise this, but you could always search for your email address. Unless you've used more than one address on here, in which case, eh, I dunno. I am not being helpful. I should be in bed.

Rebecca, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, I've used more than one which is why searching is sort of sucky (. I had to change, hotmail was horrible.

Nicole, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And now you've switched to some kind of Buddhist address? Hippy.

N., Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That was one of the only times I even came close to spelling name/addy correctly last night. Drink + writing boring interminable paper + ilx procrasturbation do not mix. Let this be a warning to all of you, if you treasure spelling anyway.

Nicole, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

interminable paper shd be a crackah then, when yr boss reads it on Xmas Morning

mark s, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If it included bits about ugly monkeys and the alleged cuteness of the Strokes and the bitterness of youth it would, but alas it does not.

Right, it seems ILE is now too big for freefind's free service as well, only 2500 pages are being indexed. If we want better we'll have to pay (or use Google).

Graham, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Which 2500??

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All of them.

I've arsed about with ILE Search so in now covers over 6000 pages, by splitting it into two. The first covers threads on the Recent Answers page and the New Questions page (including any uncategorised threads) (2700 pages), and threads in Categories (ie not the uncategorised ones) (3400 pages).

If you click Search Uncategorised in the results, you can then search uncategorised threads.

Neither search covers every thread its meant to, cos we're cheap.

Graham, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(heh Graham being on holiday and bored is good for ILE organisation :))

katie, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks for the improvements graham!

Ron, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who else can my boredom help the world, Katie?

My last post is bollocks, should read:

can someone, maybe Graham, give us a primer on how one does a search now?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 August 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah! I'm having alot of fun with the search function (it's my fave feature of new ILX) Dan, has some good info on ILXOR is now open!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 19 August 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I did briefly have full comprehensive up to date key word searching implemented, but it requires an index the size of the message archive itself (150MB), and there's only 300MB left on the current server, but Andrew is meant to be upgrading it and hopefully he'll let us have the extra space for the keyword index (I do have it on my own computer, mind).

The current search feature is a bit crippled then, but it's a lot better than it used to be. Every single field is optional, including both of the date fields. Name, Username and Email addresses have to be the exact text the message was posted with. The subject thing is a bit different, you have to enter an exact portion of the title, though it isn't case sensitive. eg
For "Ersk atsy can Tractor!':
Yes: 'Ersk'
Yes: 'can Tractor'
Yes: 'sy can Tra'
Yes: 'ersk atsy can tractor!'
No: 'atsy ersk'
You can also use SQL wildcards (_=1 character, %=many characters):
Yes: 'Ersk%trac_or'

'Messages' returns every matching message.
'Threads' does the same thing but groups them by thread and returns the most popular result.
'Questions' returns only the first message on a thread.
There's a limit of 100 results because I haven't implemented paging.

Graham (graham), Monday, 19 August 2002 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you Graham!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 August 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and you can use the >ILM link to repeat the search on ILM, because it links to the same page on the other board.

Graham (graham), Monday, 19 August 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

grrraham i have been searching and searching and i cannot for the life of me find the shagging shayne carter thread. can anyone help me out here? oh shit i'm late!

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 01:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Why doesn't everyone in the world want to shag Shayne Carter?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fank yooo!

I just fixed a bug with doing a keyword search for Messages would only return questions. If you've tried one of these and got dodgy results, try again.

the ile search is amazing. i searched for 'yerba' and it returned one thread with a mention of mate, but did not contain the word "yerba" at all!! uncanny!

ron (ron), Saturday, 30 November 2002 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

ron - you like mat`e? cool!

Queen G (Queeng), Saturday, 30 November 2002 05:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i just got my mate and bombilla today! my friend just returned from south america bearing gifts. we found a local market that sells the tea so now i'm all set

ron (ron), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:32 (twenty-three years ago)

rock on - is your bombilla silver? any decorations? I found a deli 5 minutes walk from here who sells me 500 g for 7 bucks australian which is cool. How do you drink it? Straight, with sugar, or with lemon? And have you ever had iced mat`e? They do that up in the north east - it's a trip when yr used to the boiling variety. Salud, amor y dinero.

Queen G (Queeng), Saturday, 30 November 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah it does Ron, there's a link to www.yerba-mate.com in Tracer's post, and ILE search doesn't distinguish between things in HTML.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 30 November 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yes you are right. i didn't think of the html. i am going to pretend that it is magical though!

my bombilla is silver. the end, instead of being the little flat-spoony-looking type, is straight all the way down, with a little spring screwed on that serves as part of the filter. i have been putting a bit of sugar for now, i might lose the sugar after i get used to the taste. i think one kilo was about 8 or 9 $US?? salud!

tried to find a pic, and apparently 'bombilla' also means lightbulb

ron (ron), Saturday, 30 November 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I will populate this board with dancing spidermen!! then my work of mass destruction will be complete!

Whenever I enter anything into ILE search, it does not seem to find whatever I am looking for.

Does anyone else have this problem?

the pinefox, Monday, 28 April 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I find it does its job very well. What isn't working for you?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 28 April 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps the pinefox is not using the search link at the bottom of this page. If you are using this thread to search, it will not work.

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The site hasn't been spidered by freefind (the box at the top of this page) for a very long time now. But the official ILE search is damn handy.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 28 April 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

You were right, I didn't know there was a Search built in to the ILX page. Or, I had forgotten. I thought one had to use a Search from this thread, which indeed didn't work.

the pinefox, Monday, 28 April 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven years pass...

can we instigate idk say permabans for anyone who posts idk say endless lists of nominations for clownish polls rendering ILX search unusable

happy to consider other options (would deindexing these threads word?) but atm I think permaban is a decent starting position

post you had fecund thoughts about (darraghmac), Saturday, 11 April 2015 20:28 (eleven years ago)

I've complained about this sort of this before, but apparently the mods love clownish list posts and refuse to delete them because they generate ad revenue (ever heard of keyword stuffing?)

the geographibebebe (unregistered), Saturday, 11 April 2015 21:15 (eleven years ago)

*this sort of thing

"Search For Threads or Posts Written By a Given User" appears to be broken.

alimosina, Wednesday, 9 April 2025 17:30 (one year ago)

It works for me

Alba, Wednesday, 9 April 2025 21:58 (one year ago)

I've only just, after more than two decades, realised that you can actually combine a search for a user with a keyword search. I'd never clicked on "Show search hints" before to get the syntax.

Alba, Wednesday, 9 April 2025 22:00 (one year ago)

Yeah, I use "displayName" a lot.

jaymc, Wednesday, 9 April 2025 22:06 (one year ago)

Unfortunately I've used it on some random keywords in conjunction with my name and the cringe factor for things I posted in 2004 is intense
