Bo Selecta!

What the living fuck is this? This is a parody of how crap and self-indulgent alternative comedy became in the mid 90s, right? Because god forbid this is actually meant to be funny.

The three jokes that make up this TV show.

"Ah look, he's foreign so he can't speak English"
"Ah look, he's dressed up as a celebrity, it must be a parody"
"Ah look, Reeves and Mortimer did this joke when they weren't funny in the late 90s".

Someone defend this program, or alterantively give me the home address of that pigcunt of a host so I can go round to his house and ram a broken bottle into his rectum.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

so it's crap. get off your high horse

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 6 September 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

aw come on ! i thought it was really funny !
can't say why yet though.

piscesboy, Friday, 6 September 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The bit where the teddy-bear-host got *ahem* aroused in front of Liberty X made me chuckle! Crude - but funny nonetheless.

DaveyC, Friday, 6 September 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Appalling. I hate these shows where much of it is the star acting as an arsehole and some celebrity or member of the public being polite and patient. This is like a less talented and more arrogant Dom Joly, and who'd have thought that was possible?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

yuz are racialist cos i is black?

Queen G (Queeng), Saturday, 7 September 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

It was funnier than Celeb. And Nobleandsilver. And Stand Up Britain. Take The Mike kicked its arse, though.

God, I was bored last night.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 7 September 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw this show, it's that guy who used to be on pop world right? I hate things with masks and stuff, it just reminds me of spitting image. And the pathetically crude interview with Davina was a terrible TV moment.

Celeb I can guess is bad, coz it's based on a comic strip.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 7 September 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, and harry enfield's in it.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 7 September 2002 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

He was the 'comedy stalker' in Big Brother 3. He was also one of the launch things for E4... along with Nobleandsilver, oddly enough. Taken two years to crossover. That was worth the wait, eh?

michael jackass, Saturday, 12 October 2002 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's worse than Victor Lewis Smith.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 12 October 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

It is as bad as Victor Lewis Smith crossbred with Dom Joly.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 12 October 2002 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Me like.

Lek Dukagjin, Saturday, 12 October 2002 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

anon, Thursday, 17 October 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

the absolute bo.
chamone motherf*cker.

having it and "Meet Ricky Gervais" one after the other was perfect Friday night laugh material to tape then watch when back from the pub.

The bit where he is snogging Ethan Hawke, while Uma Thurman was feeding the pony - unbelievable.

he hee.

Dom Passantino should stick to his Bergman films. Oh and Charlie Chaplin.

There're no jokes and it shouldn't be funny but it really really is. Then again, I get a 9lb cock on over the crudest things in life.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Saturday, 30 November 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

After having "Spaced" driven down my throat by all my mates and having it in my Amazon reccomendations, I thought I'd take the gambit and get series 1 on DVD.
I really don't get why this is rated so highly. The acting is ropey to say the least. None of the characters are likeable or even appealing. The predictable jokes are few and far between and usually consist of people either arguing pettily or falling into things. They rip off loads of jokes from better shows. The production seems to have been given precedence over the script so you get loads of "clever" film references that have been done a million times before (Star Wars, The Shining etc.) and better by things like League of Gents.

I know what with shows like The Office, it's not cool to have jokes in comedies any more, but at least The Office made up for this by the excellent character acting and script. What do you guys think of "spaced"?

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 30 November 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I refuse to watch it as it shot on Removed-Field Video and is thus utterly lacking in integrity.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 30 November 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

what's remote-field-video? is it that shitty sticky stuff they smear all over the camera lense that blurs everything and hurts your eyes?

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 30 November 2002 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm.. Steady Mike did you make up the term 'Removed-Field Video'? Google seems to suggest so. I am never trusting you again and no longer feel bad about not replying to your party invitation.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 30 November 2002 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

N. do you write for SOTCAA?

RickyT (RickyT), Saturday, 30 November 2002 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Field Removed Video. It's not used in TV shows anymore, though - they have more sophisticated ways of making the video look all "filmy" - I've heard of something called "colour grading" but I have no idea how this works.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Monday, 2 December 2002 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been meaning to ask one of my lecturers (= Head Engineer at Granada or Head of Engineering at every place ever ever ever that's had anything to do with TV) about it.

Graham (graham), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

its ccccrrrraaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiigggggg ddddaavviidd. can i get re wind!!!!!?????

its proper bo i tell the!!!

craig david, Monday, 2 December 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Right, I asked. FRV does exist, but "FRV" doesn't. ie It really happens but that's not the technical term for it, and the person I asked said that there isn't one other than "making video look like film". Basically it works by instead of transmitting half of one frame and then half of the next frame, transmitting the half of one frame and then the other half of the same frame, which is how film works (where each frame is shown twice). I was told to look here, but they never mention it specifically.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 5 December 2002 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Because on film the entire frame is shown at once and then vanishes while the shutter feeds the next photo, wheras on TV the scan for each frame will start before the bottom half has been rescanned and hence there is constantly an image (persistence of vision sorts this out but it changes the fluidity of the motion).

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 5 December 2002 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, that's true, but "FRV" seems to be about compensating for interlacing, rather than sorting out scanning vs frames.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 5 December 2002 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Dom, you know what, you're absolutely right!! In fact, your TV show is much better. And I'm sure that Big Brother were going to ask you to promote their show but you were too busy!! Is that right?!?!

Stop being so negative, you self righteous gimp!! I thought the show was really funny!! If you don't like it don't watch it!! It really is that easy!!

Duke Justice, Sunday, 8 December 2002 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes Dom, how dare you express an opinion!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 8 December 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

its propre bo i tell thee bo selecta is the best thing on tv these days so chamone motherfuckers.

paul allaway, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, the michael jackson is the funniest thing on it by far - even tho it really isnt that clever or anything

and Spaced is fuckin classic, what wrong with you people? and sod that field-removed thing as a criticism, its completely irrelevant in the long run

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 December 2002 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Got the new Eddie Izzard DVD yesterday. A bit disappointing considering his former top notch output but still nice all the same. Thought he was repeating the same jokes a lot and trying a bit too hard to play up to the NYC audience.
