Cakes, what's the all time classic?

We've just had a way too long conversation in my office about buns and the different things people call them. We wondered why sometimes a Chelsea bun is known as a Belgian bun and whether there actually is a difference - it spiralled out of control from there. I just thought I'd bring a little light heartedness back coz all this talk of dead babies and stuff is depressing......
Personally I think you can't beat a nice Iced Gingerbread

Plinky (Plinky), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

caramel donuts and vanilla slices. also anything with cinnamon.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma to thread, obv. Anything involving chocolate usually = classic, but I also like a nice basic currant bun, heavy on the glaze and the currants.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I was looking forward to reading the rest of this thread and salivating. Now my plan = in ruins thanks to Tim.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom - You are asked about cakes and you think of urinals? I'm sensing a childhood trauma ......

Plinky (Plinky), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Jam Doughnuts!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Cake is nothing compared to good pie. The exception to the rule is cheesecake, which is really pie.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

the urinal connection

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

beaver cake

I like cup-cakes. When I was a kid, the hansel and gretel house cake mum made for me was a big hit. I remember there was a calculator one in our book of children's birthday cakes. Also the school satchel with thick licorice straps looked good.

spectra, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry, the beaver cake belongs on a worst cakes thread.

spectra, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

tiramasu (maybe not an according to hoyle cake, but so what ?)

dirt cake threaded through with gummy worms

mike (ro)bott, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i like tiramisu

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Lane cake and princess cake (quiet, jess) but I would have to say that a plain old chocolate cake's the classic.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i still think "princess cake" sounds like a character from gidgit or something.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

merrin's vegan chocolate cake is the best cake known to humankind.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

STICKY DATE PUDDING!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 07:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I cannot choose. It would be like asking a mother to choose her favourite child (NB I have never yet given birth to a cake).

Emma, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 07:47 (twenty-three years ago)

BEEFCake.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 08:56 (twenty-three years ago)

That reminds me of "most distasteful shop name ever" -- a clothing boutique called "Sophie's Choice".

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

banana cake with carrot cake icing (cream cheese) made by Andrew's mum. and it was just for me! lovely!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The other day Lixi and I craved cake. So we went to the lovely shop down the road which has a smashing cake selection. I bought some Fondant Fancies where were GRATE++++ and Lixi bought a half Marble cake which sadly passed it's prime before it could be fully scoffed. The same fate did not meet the fondant fancies which were spanked that very night. My favourite fondant fancy is the yellow one.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of Sophie's Choice, today my velcro-letters t-shirt says FIVE ZONES FROM SOPHIE

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm chelsea buns :) also yum yums are good for a sugar/fat fix but the chelseas always win with their sugar/fat/sticky icing combination

Madam Plinky (Madam Plinky), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

It's all good when there's chocolate involved.

We've also discussed the glory of Baileys Cheesecake before.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
I just had a really good idea for cake - with After Eight chocolates in a layer in the middle. The dark chocolate would melt slightly during the baking, and there would be a gooey minty chocolatey mess in the middle when cooked! Kind of like stollen, but chocolatey and minty rather than marzipanny.

Is this in fact a good idea, or is mint not meant to interact meaningfully with cake?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG liz will you marry me?

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid that you'll have to fight Robster for my hand. And I don't do marriage. But I will make you cake!

I thought it was a good idea, but wasn't sure. A bit on the Heston Blumenthalist side.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmmm, I love Angel Layer Cake but it lacks that something...

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Big, big fan of cheesecake, the little cupcakes with the ricepaper circles that had cartoon characters on them and anything with caramel.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to adore battenburg as a child, but have had it recently and it's an utter sugar nightmare. Marzipan remains a great thing, though.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

on that theme Liz, how about a roulade style thing with fingers of fudge in the middle? Would also work for Stollen too.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Convinced of your baking abilities though I am Liz, I'm not sure about mint in conjunction with cake...

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Incidentally, I don't know why I was waxing lyrical about currant buns earlier on this thread. The all-time classics are clearly a) torta capresa (flour is for WUSSES, let's just use a ton of ALMONDS and SUGAR) and b) lemon drizzle.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh Cabbage you naughty boy. A finger of fudge is never enough, so how about a WHOLE CAKE MADE OF THEM? Cor.

I think mint works within the context of a chocolate cake.

Har har Archel I still have half a lemon and poppyseed drizzle cake at home. Mmmm teatime beckons.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

a very rich dark chocolate cake, witha minty layer in the middle would be good I think.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)
