Tell me about your pets!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Five cats - Tiggy, Panda and Smudge when I was living w/ my parents, Cleo and Tubby when I lived in Palmers Green. Tiggy ate my Sea Monkeys! I BADLY miss having a puss around the house, but current living arrangements preclude the keeping of a kitten.

I love catsitting for friends!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

5 cats: minnie, meggie, suzie, alex and another one i can't remember name of.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

oh gosh i will try to remember them all. there was a dog called "ruff" when i was very little. he died, and i don't remeber what he looked like. we also had a cat called old bag, who died when i was about 10. then at tarras we got a white cat called chalky, i can't remember when he died, but i don't think he adjusted to windsor very well. we had a few pet sheep, they were lambs whose mums had died that our neighbours (farmers) would give to us. there was pinky, lizzie, lambsey (she was mine, and part merino, and really tame), and some twins called turbo and twerp. the awesomest part of spring was getting to feed the pet lambs, lambs are the cutest things. none of our pet sheep went to the meat works. also, my dad used to shoot rabbits for the pest destruction board and sometimes he'd bring home baby rabbits which we would keep as pets (this is illegal and also stupid because wild rabbits don't like being kept captive thus they die quickly). after chalky died we got a new grey cat called smokey that some hippies gave to us. hes still alive but dribbles a lot. after old bag died we got a fluffy black cat which is called buffy, shes mean and selfcentred. also, back when dad worked on the pest destruction board, he had work dogs, one of which was friendly, cute and had black floppy-hair like an indykid, called chum. the other workdogs were mean so i don't remember them.

i haven't lived with many animals since leaving home, only a black cat called nogano last year. so not counting the illegal wild rabbits and the mean workdogs, thats 12 pets.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

there's one missing but its name escapes me

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ps i cried soooo much when lambsey died.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Old Bag is a fantastic cat name!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Cat Rover who died after a long life pursuing and eating a succession of our pet mice (all called Monty I, II, III etc), gerbils Sooty and Sweep, hamsters Harriet and Spike, dog Lucy, cats Rumpole, Portia and Portia's 5 kittens of which 1, Cobweb, was kept. I think there was a guinea pig and some fish too but I can't remember their names. Oh and my stepmother's tatty cockatiel Frankie and my dad's spaniel Charlie.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Only Portia the cat. Not the same Portia the cat as Archel unless she has been leading a strange double life like those bigamist men you read about in the News of the World magazine.

Emma, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't that what cats do? = have lunch at every house in yr street, then start again in time for tea?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It could be that, Mark, or it could be because I'm really EMMA'S MUM. IN DISGUISE.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark S, that is what all the other cats do round my parents' way, only our cat is a big wuss and sits on the boiler watching & quaking with fear as the bigger, harder cats come in and eat all her food.

Ha ha Mum I have caught you out in your dodgy double life commuting between Brighton & north Bucks & co-habiting with a younger man. What's it worth not to tell Dad?

Emma, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha well if you don't tell him about me, I won't tell him that YOU cavort with complete strangers over this dangerous interwebby thing (most of whom should be locked up if they're not already) when you should be working, young lady. Deal?

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Quite a few -- let's see, three dogs in succession (Sally, Suzy and Lexie, who is still with the family), a series of fish, three hamsters in succession (all named Tory - and quite adorable they were), a few lizards, the ant farm the one time, couple of cats for a bit here in the house I'm in (not in my room for obvious reasons, namely allergies from hell), and so forth. Currently no beasties in the house and I haven't had a pet of my own since high school.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and for a while a couple of years back two rabbits. They were great at keeping the back lawn trimmed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i've got a dog called angus. he lives with my mum now, since i moved out. he's getting old, but he's quirky with it... he's stone deaf, until you jingle his dinner bowl, then kapow! miraculous recovery. until after dinner....

before then i'd only owned a couple of fish. since i thrive on originality, one was called Jaws.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

started off with two goldfish won at a fair, Goldie and Buff. Then two other goldfish which died and then it was down to Finnett's the pet shop in Lordship Lane to get some fish with greater longevity. "Try catfish, they're bulletproof!" advised the pet shop owner. So we bought two catfish, called Gussie and Tetra. Every so often we would buy plastic bags of Daphnia which they would pursue and eat enthusiatically. We also bought aquatic snails to keep the tank clean. Unfortunately, these were eaten as well!

Having looked after a gerbil during the school holidays, we bought a gerbil called George which got a tumour on its stomach and died after a couple of years. We never had any cats and dogs - I was very allergic to both as a child. Fortunately this is something I appear to have grown out of.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

AWWWWWW PETS when i was v tiny we had timmy the cat, and wally the cat who was a kind of stray, and then simon the cat and byron the dog, and then ossie the cat and now my mum has hank and dolly the cats. we also had assorted gerbils over the school holidays, a tortoise called george and some golfish. BUT this does not count all my nan's pets, who included a mental budgie also called george, charlie the cat, chas the dog, tammy the cat and lily the dog! and of course now i live with aubrey and rickyT, ahaha!

katie (katie), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Whya wasn't the tortoise called george the tortoise, and the budgie george the mental budgie. Seems most unfair.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

buh!!?!! ooh i also forgot my mum's legendary budgie Poo. but i'm not sure if he was still around when i was born.

katie (katie), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

one dog called Blondie
a fish (Stone Loach) called Boris
2 cats (Mother and daughter) Bella and Bessie

The dog and fish died, the cats I don't see any more, this is sad as they were lovely.

I'll put some lovely photos up one day, I found them the other day, they'll make Katie G cry.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(well, you gave all your other pets cutie AWWWWWW 'nnn the xxxxx' names and the georges didn't and I felt sorry. Poo the legendary budgie)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My family have gone through black miniature poodles like Spinal Tap go through drummers. Sam was the first, and 'went to live on a farm' after biting me when I was three. Next, Tuffy was run over by a car when he was one. Casey made it to eight but died in bitch-duel with neighbour's Great Dane. The second Casey had only one eye and was hit by neighbour's car. We got Molly for my 16th birthday, who was extremely clever in a slightly psychotic way, but actually died of old age. Family haven't figured out that girl dogs are smarter and thus live longer, so now have Willie, who is two and whose best trick is to paw down the button for the power windows of my sister's car while said car is going through the car wash.

Also two black rabbits: Muggs (male) and Bluebell (female).

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

2 cats: prue and tiffany.
2 dogs: toby and dougal.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Had two cats, Mollie and Syd and a dog, Zero. Mollie died last year and my mum* had her cremated, so I now have a cat, a dog and a can of cat. If nothing else, it's a conversation starter... "What's that?" My cat. "Must not cost a lot to feed..."

*My mother is insane about cats and refused to let me bury said cat, even though cat cremation was $75.

luna.c (luna.c), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

My family had a cat for years, then after it died, a dog: my parents didn't let the fact that I was severely asthmatic (it nearly killed me several times), with my worst allergy being animal hair, trouble them. I had a tortoise once (didn't last long, obv), and we had some tropical fish. I've had none since leaving home. I'd love a cat or two, but it would likely make me very ill. I know I could have non-mammalian pets, but I'm not keen.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom never allowed us pets, so I have only ever had the two cats that I have now: Pablo and Sully. Pablo is a gigantic grey 20lb cat that I adopted from a neighbor. The flaky neighbor is responsible for the Radiohead-inspired name. He is a huge whining ball of neurosis (due to being abused by said neighbor's bratty little brother, I suspect) which makes him seem more like a dog than a cat. Sully I've only had for a couple of months now, he is a wee fluffy white cat that reminds me of Hello Kitty in both looks and personality.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

We had a ton of cats when I was growing up (sampling of names: Sparky, Socks, Tiger, Stumpy, Socks II, Tiger II, Midnight, Whiskers, Sanctus/Baby Cat, Benedictus/Benny/Ben Ben) and one dog named Duke. I also had three goldfish but I don't remember their names. (The day they were flushed was a sad day, indeed.)

I currently don't have any pets because my wife is allergic to them. I kind of want a bird, though. Like a falcon or something dangerous like that.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dang Birdmang

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I can imagine dan with a parrot! He'd train it to say rude things!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Both of them should wear an eyepatch.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I would avoid a parrot precisely because I wouldn't be able to avoid the temptation to teach it to say rude things. The last thing you want to have happen when your parents come to visit is to have your pets start screaming "MUFFLICKER! MUFFLICKER!" the instant they walk in the door. (That should wait until after dessert, hahaha.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

At which time all your relatives lez up, etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i forgot, i also lived with a cat called mausoleum when i was 18.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I had several cats, all named Kitty, when I was living with my parents. And a weineramer named Saber. And another weineramer named Arrow. No, I don't know what's up with the phallic names, either. Two cats as an adult (Overend and Jobeth). Two cats owned by roommates (Candy and Bunny).

Now I'm allergic to everything, I haven't had a pet in years.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"byron the dog"

That made me happy. We've had upwards of 30 dogs through the house (that were "pets": Magic, Uta, Casbah, Brutus, Pallas, Violet, Delaware, Brisco) , a couple cockatiels, chameleons, and fishies. And Bella, my lost ferret.

byron the human (bnw), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

4 kitties. Grey Slayer, Stubbie, and my current two (Pixel and Linus)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 3 October 2002 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Far more than I would like. I despise pampered "domesticated" (read: helpless and hence pathetic) beasties.

, Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't want this nice thread to end on such a bummer.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 3 October 2002 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Too many chickens to mention, too many fish too. The 6 cats were/ are GreyGrey, Kratch, Ratty, Jasper, Pinchbeck, Sirius and some kittens. 2 mice called Ezekiel and Finbar. 2 Russian Dwarf hamsters called Zephany and Ischl.3 Siberian hamsters called Tanith, Theorinthe and Craig.2 rabbits called Archbishop Tutu and Jellybean, and their offspring.2 Gerbils called Treacle and Nibbles. All the rodents died horribly.

alix (alix), Thursday, 3 October 2002 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 06:42 (twenty years ago)

I've always had cats, from the day I was born. I can't even begin to remember all their names. Some favorites, IIRC, were Sam, Romeo, Norman, Frida, Sally, and Maggie.

Kenan (kenan), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 06:47 (twenty years ago)

Frida is a cool name for a cat.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Thanx.

Oh! And I had a pair once... Sugar and Spice. Spice lived to be old and very very fat. Sugar, sadly, had a habit of sleeping under the wheel of the Volkswagon. Serious horror and trauma ensued, as you might imagine.

Kenan (kenan), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 06:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh no! My only real pet tragedy involved the dog Ralph. Ralph was a totally hyperactive black cocker spaniel. One afternoon I was (4 years old, I believe) playing with my Mr. Potato Head, and I reached for the yellow plastic glasses at the same time Ralph did. He missed, I won, and I held glasses aloft like a newly-crowned Olympic medalist. Being four, and (as a kid) fairly chubby, apparently Ralph - in his bitterness - decided to equate my ear with a dried apricot and all-but ripped it off. I cupped it and ran to my mother, who was talking on the phone. I told her the dog had eaten my ear and hse told me I had to stop lying. I showed her, she called the emergency room, and I went in. It was sewn back (I don't even have a scar!) and two weeks later Ralph was squashed by the UPS truck. I didn't shed a tear.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 06:54 (twenty years ago)

(that is dedicated to Calum)

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 06:55 (twenty years ago)

The only animal I consider having lived with is my old rabbit, called, imaginatively enough, Harvey. Because he lived in my room, and he would run up to you when entered the room and do figures of eight around you legs. And he would occasionally jump onto the bed in the middle of the night and scare the dickens out of me. He was a good rabbit. (still alive, I had to give him to a family friend when I went into hospital. I still dream he's in the room sometimes. Awww.)

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 06:58 (twenty years ago)

awwww... that is really sweet. Pets are so cool.

Kenan (kenan), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 07:15 (twenty years ago)

Cats: Arthur, Merlin, Guinevere who is still alive at 17.(sensing a theme?) Astra, Gypsy, Freddie, Lucy, my brother had Nikita and Tyler (briefly. He stayed with the evil ex-girlfriend) We had a dog called Tony for a while right before my parents split up, he was quite agressive and had to be put down. We had a stray cat in college house called Ce-a-tee. (now renamed Oscar and happily living in a yarn shop in Warsaw IN) Um, had a rabbit called Lola (she was a showgirl...) and I briefly had a goldfish called King Tut when I was about 13.
