You've had a couple of months to play now. Has anyone had problems? Anything you'd like changed? Does anything feel a little bit clunky? etc etc

(Anyone caught thanking me will be snuffed out)

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

it's ace, but needs more dinosaurs. and my U key is sticking, can you fix that?

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd really like an automatic blue writing feature, or a little Clippo style character to pop up and help people do blue writing. Or a blue writing FAQ next to the inserting pictures of kittens FAQ.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

It's fucking wicked, mate. I was actually just having a look around today and was thinking how impressed I am. Nice one.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really understand why it says "Unread messages" at the top of each thread.

Sam (chirombo), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, the jump-to-new-answers thing was working great before I think and the line looks a bit clumsy.

IP Banning? ;)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

There is automatic blue writing, Peter.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, if you put a web address in it goes blue automatically (and even adds the title if it's a link to an ILE thread). And if you're wanting to post a picture from the web, just making the address 'ihttp' instead of 'http' will do all the work for you.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Unread Messages thing is appearing in the wrong place. i'll fix it as soon as I get home.

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks Nick, I'd missed that particular Great Leap Forward.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The Unread Messages thing is appearing in the wrong place. i'll fix it as soon as I get home.
It's appearing in the right place on mine. Crisis, what crisis?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

my tiny crisis is just that some of my Unread # of messages (for threads I've read) are black now instead of red, but other ones are still red.
Maybe it's trying to decide which ones I'll be more interested in?

lyra (lyra), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

(If you have unread messages switched off, i's putting an Unread Message divider above the first question)

Red ones are the ones you've looked at before.

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I just lurve it, that's all. The leap from greenspun to this is like night and day. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

My only fear is that Graham is MONITORING us in new and various ways.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

No I don't, it doesn't log anything non-functional, mainly out of laziness on my part.

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going to enjoy it a lot more now it's got automatic blue writing and pictures. I used to feel so inadequate back on poxy old Greenspun.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish there was an edit feature so I could correct my typo's.
I have no idea how you could do this without leaving the board open to abuse.

Simeon (Simeon), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

correct my typo's.
It's like rain on your wedding day!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, are you saying it's intrinsic to the charm of the board and I should learn to live with it (or learn to type)?
Or are you just quoting Alanis Morrisette at me?

Simeon (Simeon), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just quoting Alanis Morissette (typos not typo's).

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

OH! THE SHAME, THE SHAME!

(can we have a "shoot me now" feature please Graham?)

Simeon (Simeon), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

If it self corrected typos no-one would know it was really me.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, you misspelled Morissette but that is to be applauded.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't think your double-pedantry went unnoticed N.
Alanis Morissette is never to be applauded.

Simeon (Simeon), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

You could claim that typo's is an apostophe of elision, not of possession. shortening "typographical mistakes". ahem. i'm not here

Alan (Alan), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

apost'ophe of elision surely?

mark s (mark s), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

You can only claim that about typo's if you write typo' for the singular, and I've not come across anyone that mentalist yet. If they exist, I bet they're hereabouts...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 7 October 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Any chance you could put some indicator of when a thread has pictures, esp porn, for those who may be surfing while at work?

Makes them easier to find when you get home too I suppose.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 7 October 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

No complaints. It's mega.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 7 October 2002 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't see how Graham's programming can determine whether there is porn on a thread!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 7 October 2002 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin that's true, but I assume he's be able to find an IMG SRC string in the coding. Then it's up to us to see whether it's worth avoiding or not.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 7 October 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

shortening "typographical mistakes".
This was my thinking... Alas typo is in the Dictionary so Nick is correct. As you expect from somebody who has worked for a publication where they are notoriously abundant. Ahem, I'm not here either)

Back on topic: How about an option to make external links open in a new window so I don't lose my place in a thread?

Simeon (Simeon), Monday, 7 October 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Or how about when the tag checker says "you haven't closed the tag YOU FOOL!" It also previews the post as it would appear if you went ahead and posted it?
This wouldn't have saved me from the error in my last post - but still...

Simeon (Simeon), Monday, 7 October 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

yes a preview feature would be nice, maybe! that way mentalists like myself can look and realise we are dangerously close to posting bollocksy bollocks before it's TOO LATE! aiiii!

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 7 October 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd also like to suggest banana cake for our wedding cause i'm none too fond or raisins or marzipan. i don't know how this might be implemented w SQL and PHP though. hrum.

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 7 October 2002 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

billy - there is already a setting for showing threads with pictures. look in settings section again - it shows up as a hollow bullet before the thread.

graham, i'm having similar thoughts as lyra above. i think that you have changed the unread messages counter to degrees of red, rather than the original way of every thread being the same red. result for me is the first couple of times i look at a thread, they stay black (or perhaps some red so dark i can't tell the difference). i would prefer them all to be red as soon as they are viewed, rather than this changing hues of red.

ron (ron), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:36 (twenty-three years ago)

on greenspun, whenever i opened my browser, i could see the visited link color on threads i had previously viewed. on ilxor, they seem to revert to unvisited link color every time the browser is started. i know you have incorporated this red thing, but that only shows on threads with new answers since last viewing. is there some way to have the visited links stay that color? i am generally using opera, is that problematic here (it does strange stuff, i wouldn't be surprised if it's messing this up)

ron (ron), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel really ungrateful bitching about anything, but all of the different colors distress me. One shade of red would suffice.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Billy: The show images thing has been in place some time, under Settings. I'll think about previews, but it just adda bit of clutter.

Opening links in new windows is more of a browser thing. Either Right Click > Open In New Window (or you can Command-click on a Mac, and I presume there's a Windows thing like that). I could add a setting and an HTML hack, though it's a bit tricky as at the moment messages aren't looked at all before they're displayed, so it mean a big extra step.

I'll think about changing the hues thing. I was thinking *bright* red would be good for threads you started, maybe?

Ron: Do *all* of them revert?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:56 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, for instance i just closed the browser, and when i reopened it, once again a whole field of blue links, no purple ones :-(

i will try a little i.e. experiment now

ron (ron), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

well, as i feared, i.e. is keeping that history properly (if that's what it is in fact happening / not happening) so it's not your fault! i'm fairly certain this did not happen before, though. is there maybe a more netscape-friendly way of doing something with storing this information in the history? i will check my browser settings, perhaps i have tweaked something out of whack :-( (also, it's no big deal, esp with the red feature)

ron (ron), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 02:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The only thing I can think of is the jumping straight to the unread point labels are upsetting it, but I can't see why that would only start upsetting it when you close. Hmm.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no shades of red, but I don't mind.

rainy (rainy), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i dunno either, i can't see anything in my browser settings - it's set to keep links as visited for 10 days. don't sweat it

ron (ron), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Ron, it could be the shuttling between www.ilxor.com/thread... and ilx.wh3rd.net/thread... since your browser wouldn't recognize them as the same urls with the different server names at the beginning.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

You people are crazed... I've never noticed this whole color field, but now that I know about I hope to become obsessional about it as well. Ta, Graham.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 04:40 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe, lyra. but if that was so i would think it would be the same in ie. besides, all the links point to ilx.wh3rd.net, even my bookmarks, so i don't think any ilxor url's are going into the browser. i could be wrong

ron (ron), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 04:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Ron, Graham thanks for that. You guys are grrrrate.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 06:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham - I realised that I'm just being lazy and if I want a link in a new window I can just do as you say and ctrl-click.

Through thinking about this, I've just learned you can force a new window using TARGET = "_blank"
So for my own amusement...
ILX is now open (in a new window)

Simeon (Simeon), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 09:31 (twenty-three years ago)

it's very good graham.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 09:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham may not be monitoring your every move, but I certainly am. I know when you're reading threads with one hand down your trousers - I won't name names, but you'd best stop it before I end this whole cruel experiment.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

you mean it's a race? no problem

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
So what do you want now?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 26 December 2002 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

thats a geek joke isnt it?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 30 December 2002 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

um... am i the only one who gets a "can't find that, sorry" page when trying to go to ilxor.com (as opposed to ilx.wh3rd.net)?

also, my google wound up being in azerbaijani twice. i don't know if that's connected.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

both of these things also happen to me

Hurting 2, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, ilxor.com needs renewing, which is causing those errors. Both ilx.p3r.net/ILX/ and ilx.wh3rd.net/ILX/ are still working. Once it's up again, I'll set up a status.ilxor.com for the future.

the google thing is HIIJNX.

stet, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

do i have to kick that jon guy's ass? i'll do it.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

Is the sandbox.thehold.net URL pointing at one of those then, because that's how I'm here at the moment?

ailsa, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

"Firefox can't find the server at www.ilxor.com."

I got in through the sandbox address.

onimo, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, seriously, azerbaijani google is the kind of thing that makes me wake up in a cold sweat thinking there is malware on my pc so...

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

xxp

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

The sandbox url points straight at the server too, it's just like p3r.net and wh3rd.net xp

stet, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

if all else fails just bookmark 206.174.196.167

El Tomboto, Thursday, 9 August 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

I don't remember he old sandbox as so strikingly similar to ILE proper.

Abbott, Thursday, 9 August 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

who the fuck forgot to renew the domain?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

Can't you guys do automatic renewal?

stevienixed, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think joker.com does that. (if this whois is correct that's the registrar) They do send out status notifications, though ("your domain will expire in 2 months if you don't renew" etc), but that's the kind of mail that tends to end up in a spam filter, so maybe that's what happened.

StanM, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

I thought the domain belonged to Raposa

El Tomboto, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

xpost Oh ok. I didn't want to come across as an ass saying that. I remember I didn't at first realize we (our shop's provider) gave that service.

stevienixed, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

it does, he's listed on that WHOIS page as the owner. (but who is he? Does he post here?)

StanM, Thursday, 9 August 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

(that was an xpost, obv)

StanM, Thursday, 9 August 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

That's David. David R.

stevienixed, Thursday, 9 August 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

Oh. Congratulations, David!

StanM, Thursday, 9 August 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

enabling "always logged in" would be great
http://google.com/en

Heave Ho, Thursday, 9 August 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

had exactly the same thing, no ilxor.com and google messup. google was fixable by clicking the "something something UK something" link but i had no ilx all afternoon (didn't think to try the aliases, bookmark on this computer points at wh3rd)

on the plus side i now know how to say 'i'm feeling lucky' in azerbaijani.

koogs, Thursday, 9 August 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

I cant make google do anything weird :( It just goes to .au :/

Trayce, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

Looks like Google's fixed it/working on it - mine automatically goes to .be too, but the google search thingy in firefox (top right) goes to .com and that was in Azerbaijani until the layout of the page changed a couple of hours ago.

StanM, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Has Raposa sent any ransom notes yet?

Heave Ho, Monday, 13 August 2007 01:47 (eighteen years ago)
