Very true, that is perhaps the most incontrovertible fact in all of music.

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Ridiculously classic (up until Ozzy left anyway.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I mean, it's probably very naive of me to say this, but I can't imagine anyone saying "dud" to (classic, vintage-line-up) Black Sabbath. I mean, even if it wasn't quite your cup of tea, you must admit that they excelled at their particular art.

Later, post-Born Again-era Sabs? Eh, not so much.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Heaven & Hell = just as classic as the Ozzy years.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:37 (twenty years ago)

It also seems like their most Led Zep-ish album, which is not a bad thing.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:37 (twenty years ago)

I can't imagine anyone saying "dud" to (classic, vintage-line-up) Black Sabbath

except for the classic, vintage lineup's last couple albums. technical ecstasy, anyone? anyone???

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:54 (twenty years ago)

I'll stand by Never Say Die.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Incontrovertibly classic. Funny I was just wondering this morning who'd win in a taking sides, Zeppelin or Sabbath? Maybe that's something to ponder, because who doesn't worship Sabbath?

steve hise, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Funny I was just wondering this morning who'd win in a taking sides, Zeppelin or Sabbath?

There's a thread in the archive on this very subject.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 13:58 (twenty years ago)

In fact there are (sorta) two:

Taking sides : Zeppelin or Sabbath

Taking Sides: Led Zeppelin Vol. 4 vs. Black Sabbath Vol.4

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Damn Ned, thanks, that was interesting.

Anyways one of the best love songs of all time is "Sweet Leaf."

steve hise, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Classic beyond classic. I can't imagine what almost any modern loud rock music (good or bad) would sound like without their influence.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:21 (twenty years ago)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:29 (twenty years ago)

This is like voting over and over and still being unsure your vote has been counted. I don't know anyone who would answer 'dud.'

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah, he just made my case. if there were a meter for classic, the red part would go 0 +1 +2 BLACK SABBATH.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Dud.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Wow, obviously I was the only person - ever - to not be into metal when I was younger. I don't even have enough knowledge of this subject to say classic or dud, but I will say they have never been my cup of tea. The whole aesthetic of that genre always put me off.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:26 (twenty years ago)

The first song that I loved was The Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds (live), and that is what made me start exploring music a bit. I didn't take interest in any form of rock until some years later when I was almost out of high school. To this day, I don't think I could really enjoy 70s/80s metal.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:30 (twenty years ago)

I think somebody said CLASSIC through Heaven & Hell. That is correct. Honestly the only post H&H I've ever heard is "Mob Rules". That was it for me.

My favorite all time UNDER-mentioned Sab songs: "Hand of Doom" "A National Acrobat" "The Thrill Of It All" "Junior's Eyes"

pheNAM (pheNAM), Thursday, 28 October 2004 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Sweat Loaf comes ridiculously close to bettering it though.

Piers (piers), Thursday, 28 October 2004 05:44 (twenty years ago)

But yes, I don't know how it could be possible to say DUD when considering the first six Sabbath albums.

OK, unless you're really not into heavy rock or metal. Is this the case for you Myonga?

Piers (piers), Thursday, 28 October 2004 05:47 (twenty years ago)

Heh heh heh...GOTCHA! I was taking the piss. Completely, undeniably CLASSIC up to/including Sabotage.

[I couldn't believe that Sabbath even deserved the classic/dud treatment, because I couldn't believe that ANYONE considered 'em duds. I was gonna post an are-you-kidding? reply immediately after my "DUD" assessment. But just before I did, I read Xgau's little blurb about "drug-impaired reaction time" and thought it would be HIGH-larious to wait awhile before changing my opinion, then finally changing it FOR REAL, and then blaming my long delay on...yep, you guessed it! It might've been funnier if I'd waited a day or two, but I've always been terribly impatient.]

Anyway, again, CLASSIC through first six albums; and even the inferior Dio and Gillan lineups produced a great LP between 'em.

Finally, one of these days I'm going to finally buy Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die, just to see if they're really as bad as they're reputed.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 28 October 2004 06:48 (twenty years ago)

-- Myonga Von Bontee (scottyfield...), October 28th, 2004.

Never heard Technical Ecstacy, but Never Say Die is grebt for the:

- Cover art
- Title track
- The start of 'Air Dance'

The rest is decent, listenable stuff, just not as good as what came before (and it's got synths, not that that's necessarily a bad thing).

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 28 October 2004 06:58 (twenty years ago)

Aha! Myonga - xpost - I suspected as much (well, I'll say that now). But it's got to only be a matter of time before someone answers dud for real... and I'll have to check out "Never Say Die" which slipped completely beneath my radar.

Piers (piers), Thursday, 28 October 2004 07:09 (twenty years ago)

"Junior's Eyes" on Never Say Die rocks as well, dang it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 October 2004 12:48 (twenty years ago)

It does, but I can't get over the synth onslaught.

three years pass...

Please someone tell me they know the two songs on "The Ozzman Cometh" comp: "Black Sabbath" ('70 Basement Tapes) and "War Pigs" (1970 Basement Tapes).

Both of these songs are clear evidence that BIMBLE IS MORE GOTH THAN YOU.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 21 September 2008 04:19 (sixteen years ago)

Um there's actually more than two basement tapes on that comp (if you get the 2xcd version). Don't forget the awesome versions of "Fairies Wear Boots" and "Behind the Wall of Sleep".

I love the production of those tunes and all the alternate lyrics and verses. Total godhead.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 21 September 2008 09:08 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I will have to get the 2xCD version.

A goth's work is never done.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 21 September 2008 09:37 (sixteen years ago)

is that "war pigs" the "walpurgis" version with the satan/witch themed lyrics? i love that.

Back in 2007 Heaven and Hell played "After All (The Dead)", "Computer God", and "I"...the latter of which sounded really great. That song's held up very well.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 17:29 (sixteen years ago)

Instead of that, I'll just say that the vocals have always been the least important of the idea and ethos of what is "Black Sabbath". In Sabbath, it's:

mountain-moving guitar riffs and sound > thunderous but suprisingly agile rythym section >>>>>>>>> whoever the fuck is singing the lyrics the bassist wrote. Sorry Ozzy, but you now officially suck.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

If as Ozzy alleges Iommi's trying to claim "ownership" of the Sabbath name, why would he be recording and touring as Heaven and Hell?

Plunge Protection Team, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

i mean it's true but once he got on stage he had to finish what he started

Neanderthal, Monday, 7 July 2025 18:01 (six days ago)

Did they even consider inviting the Melvins?

Liquid Plejades, Monday, 7 July 2025 18:05 (six days ago)

Don't forget that Rock & Roll Doctor is Sabbath's own cheeseball rawk song.

A. Begrand, Monday, 7 July 2025 18:10 (six days ago)

I have to flinch while I admit Steven Tyler absolutely ruled - when they swung into Whole Lotta Love I got a body rush, and Walk This Way was so chaotic good I finally got it. Bettencourt was fantastic throughout and it was great to see Ron Wood having such a great time.

Ozzmosis was not on my bingo card, its been a minute since i heard that in the wild

― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, July 6, 2025 11:53 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

i’m trying to view this but all the vids have been taken down
i’m very pro-Ozzmosis and saw him on that tour
the songs are really solid, the production is hilarious, the highs are not as high as No More Tears but it’s overall more consistent
basically, i think he/they missed a golden opportunity to do an ILM ballot poll-style fake last song and play a few bars of Zombie Stomp ahead of the intro to Crazy Train.

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 8 July 2025 03:27 (five days ago)

Tool were perfect. Rewatching it, they're so mind-bogglingly precise yet groovy live, but we NEVER get pro-shot footage like this. Seamlessly going from Forty Six and Two, into Hand of Doom (my fave Sabs track, so it wrecked me), and then a scorching Ænima. Tee hee. Seriously though, they were on fire, and Maynard sung the hell out of Hand of Doom.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 8 July 2025 03:36 (five days ago)

yeah 100 agree. i love it when they’re so locked in like that

and Hand of Doom is such a perfect choice — like GNR doing Never Say Die, you really feel their Sabbath dna when the cover song the band fits so well

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Thursday, 10 July 2025 20:44 (three days ago)

I wonder if he's still sitting on his throne?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 July 2025 20:48 (three days ago)

Man Iommi and Geezer are in such fine form. And these days it's more exciting to hear some like Ward who's from another era and has a unique feel than an amazing and tight drummer from the click & youtube era (similar to Lars).

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Thursday, 10 July 2025 20:54 (three days ago)

The thing that strikes me most about Ward's drumming is he is just a tad behind the beat, like Scott Asheton in the Stooges. Duke Ellington considered being slightly behind the beat the essence of swing, and thise guys fuckingn SWING.

Black Sabaoth (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 11 July 2025 02:00 (two days ago)

The Charlie Watts factor too, I'd argue.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 July 2025 03:56 (two days ago)

Ward swung way harder than Watts.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Friday, 11 July 2025 04:23 (two days ago)

That I won't argue against!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 July 2025 04:34 (two days ago)

I think behind the beat is relative to who you're playing with, you can't have everybody behind the beat or else that's not swinging, it's dragging. Same for the reverse.

But yeah, my main takeaway from that set was that Ward was suuuper behind the best in a very confident fashion.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 11 July 2025 04:34 (two days ago)

Jazz drummers will talk about certain bassists being very ahead of the beat, like Ray Brown, which let the drummer lay back and create a wide-feeling beat (that the lead voice could lay back on and still have a sense of propulsion). Or, Tony Williams being pretty on top of the beat and wanting the bassist to play even more on top.

But yeah, for backbeat music laying back gives it a sense of weight and groove (essential to Sabbath for sure), I just think it's contextual based on the music and what everyone else is doing.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 11 July 2025 16:06 (two days ago)

Scott or UMS or somebody else in a Mott thread made a great point about the lost art of Brit drummers of that era (Ward, Watts, Fleetwood, Buffin etc.), particularly their dues paying in wedding bands, youth club combos and the like allowing them to get a feel for tons of styles and building from there.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 11 July 2025 16:14 (two days ago)
