If I Were To Tell You That I, Your Pal Scott, Was Going To The Record Store This Week, What Would You Say I Should Definitely Buy?

Something new. Something that will wow me. Something great. Last things to wow me: Das Oath, The Fever, Isis, Big & Rich. But I'm open-minded. Dance or hip-hop tips would be helpful. I actually like the new Masta Ace album. It's a shame that nobody will ever hear it cuz he's a dinosaur and all. The track with Jean Grae is cool and so is the Beatnuts one. But I really liked the Clouddead album too. On second thought, I don't know if that Fever album really WOWED me, but I like it a lot. I haven't bought a new record in a while. Thanks, ILM! Oh, and that Brazilian booty beat album wowed me too.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you heard the Wiley record, Scott?

Little Lord Travolta (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

How about DJ Clever-Troubled Waters?
Devin The Dude?

Little Lord Travolta (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the new Chimpanzee and the Apes record

Jackson, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey I'm still up for some Masta Ace, as of Disposable Arts anyway, which had him sounding slightly eminemish(say it) or maybe it's the other way round. either way it's HIS problem at this point. Have YOU heard the latest Brand Nubian is the question. I haven't but they're of the same vintage and they were very solid on their last LP(1998 or so, admittedly). Get Astrud Gilberto and Walter Wanderley's A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness, it made my day today.

tremendoid, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I haven't heard the Wiley. Or any of these! Which one is the coolest?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Get one of those Sublime Frequencies collections (the Khmer pop one is great)! Get the new Dizzee record before you get the Wiley record though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Masta Ace is kinda bitter on the new album, he disses tommy boy something fierce, but he is trying to make peace with his past. even if he does end up in jail with Michael Rappaport by the end of the album.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I should buy Dizzee, shouldn't I? It seems like I should for some reason. I don't know how much money I will spend, but I will be hitting it a bit, you know? I have room for more than one pick.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Go with Dizzee. Even I like the Dizzee record.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, those Sublime Frequency things are too cool. I've had to stop myself from busting out the credit card and buying the whole lot on-line. it's the dangerous kinda situation where you just want them ALL. Kinda like that time when I went to the store in Philly and they had, like, 40 sun ra vinyl reissues in. I had to shield my eyes.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

should i just make a day of it and go: wiley/dizzee/streets?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Boss Pimp - Ghetto All-Stars Volume 1

noodle vague (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

LE DUST SUCKER

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a dance recommendation btw, vinyl only, cd forthcoming.

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have the Tony, Caro & John LP? All on the First Day?

If so, I'd say get reaccquianted with The Nuge. I've had his "Full Bluntal Nugity" DVD on a loop for four days.

I'm sure you heard the Arcade Fire hype. That record's pretty good.

New White Hassle is good, but no one but me seems to care about that.

Do you have Masta Killa's album yet? How about The Presence's new EP?

You can never go wrong buying a Wishbone Ash record. That couldn't POSSIBLY make your day WORSE, ya know?

Assuming you already have Burned Mind?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Wishbone Ash? yer a crazy man. I love Argus to death. I'm gonna write all this stuff down. for realz.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

hey scott! here are my recommendations for you regarding albums that came out this year that i don't think you've heard yet (unless you have, in a couple cases), but you and maria and rufus would love it:

Archimides Badkar *Tre*,
DNA *DNA on DNA*
Yolanda Perez *Aqui Me Tienes*
Red Swan *After the Barn Goes,*
Arthur Russell *The World of Arthur Russell,*
Gretchen Wilson *Here For The Party*
15.60.75, *Jimmy Bell's Still in Town*
*Crunk Classics*
*Monster Records: The Seventies Sampler*,
*The Third Unheard: Connecticut HipHop 1979-1983,*

chuck, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, I think you already DID hear Crunk Classics. So don't buy that one!!!

chuck, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And maybe you heard Red Swan and some other ones too; I forget.

chuck, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the reissue of World of Echo out yet?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

According to Forced Exposure, no. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That dust sucker album is good. So is the Bark Psychosis and I like the Wiley album if you haven't heard it.

Actually the thing that has wowed me the most recently is this collection of cds a friend of work burned for me. The Melodians, The Paragons, Alton Ellis, and Ken Boothe. Rocksteady music.

I never thought I would dig it but its awesome. With a capital AWE!

Sweet and soulful, not very up to date but well worth a try.

hector (hector), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Connecticut Hip Hop 1978-1983"??? what is that all about?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck, i have the red swan, the jimmy bell, the crunk classics, and the arthur russell. i bought the arthur russell on vinyl.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i've been meaning to get that third unheard.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, I just want to know what's on that Connecticut hiphop thing, what kind of scene was there, etc.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, do NOT buy any of those again when you go to town, okay Scott? (Unless you think they would make good presents for your friends.)

Shakey, look here, and do not give me silly guff about linking to the Voice, because you asked for it (and besides, that album is amazing):

http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0423/chang.php

chuck, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ahhh! I've been tricked!

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(And okay, not to blow my own horn or anything, but I am very proud of that long subhead kicker I wrote at the top of that article.)

chuck, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Stones Throw is a great label though. God bless Peanut Butta.

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

good list, so far. i'm going to the store on friday. i do think that i have to get the new converge album. cuz i'm like that. le dust sucker, huh?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

do not buy converge, scott!! i will send you my extra copy in the mail!!

chuck, Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

really, cool!!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Somebody up there likes me!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry scott, i recommended that and ran away. have you heard michael mayer's fabric 13 mix? there's a le dust sucker track on that. the kompakt site describes it as "heavy disco" which is hard to argue with. imagine a sleazy daft punk. on it's on a label called plong!

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

and it's on a label called plong! gah.

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I love that Fabric 13 thing. I will check that track. I can never keep the artists/songs straight on those mix cds straight. I love the disco. I will look for it.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

delete that last "straight". see, i'm doing it too.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you'd especially dig the Marissa Nadler LP on Eclipse, too

really, though, get that Tony Caro & John reissue, man. Mindblowing! No shit.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

DON'T forget the Devin!
And I need to get the Pretty Toney album; get that and tell me if I'm right to lust after it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

what does the tony, caro, and john sound like, roger. hell, my store here probably wouldn't have it anyway. sometimes they surprise me though. it's a pretty cool little store.

devin the dude, hmmm, i can't remember what the hubbub is about that one.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

devin's first album was great - wasn't so hot on the second one but others loved the shit out of it (including Wifey)

Tony Caro and John is a must-have psych folk record from 73, totally ISB-influenced but with more straight-up songs (think Jeremy Dormouse and other Dylan wannabes) countered with some incredibly starnge shit and heavenly wah. Your store probbaly won't have it but it has been reissued and is cheap (it was limited to 100 when it came out - fuckin' Olson has a copy. Jesus.)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

SCOTT make sure you hear the BERSUIT VERGABARAT album before you vote for your P & J list, if chuck would ever get time to put up my review you'd see why, just trust me, and you have to get both volumes so you probably have to order it from amazon becuase only the first one is ever in the stores, so make sure you have a birthday between now and dec. 31 and get thee to a website to order La Argentinidad Al Palo, vol. 1 and vol. 2, this is important

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe i will check forced exposure.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

here's p. sherburne on le dust sucker as he can write about them much better than i could

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

my birthday is on friday, begsy, that's why i'm going to the store! it's the only day i can justify my willful misuse of money.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

philip can write about most anything better than most of us, tricky. aren't we lucky to have him?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

oh happy birthday in advance in case I space on the thread. I'd offer to burn the discs for a special Freelance Mentalist present, but I'd probably space it and forget.

also don't not hear CHINGO BLING's The Tamale Kingpin, best rap album of the year or perhaps ever

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

for real scott.

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

When someone says masta ace soundns like eminem, i wonder when they first heard masta ace. Cuz he's been "sounding like eminem" since slaughtahouse which incidently came out back when eminem was ripping it up as a Nas soundalike

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and definitely check out

Lil Scrappy/Trillville
Devin the Dude

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I will remember those discs, Begs. I promise. See, I needed to do this. I need some new inspiration, you know? I need something to rock my boat. I've been playing moldy oldies for weeks and everything i get in the mail is just blahhhhh these days.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the scrappy/trillville, dj. I love that thing. Okay, that's like 3 or 4 votes for Devin. he's going over the top.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

On a dance tip go for Mylo's destroy rock n' roll. Possibly the best artist ever to come from Skye.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Other stuff you will probably not get any other recommendations on:

Los Tigres del Norte, Pacto de Sangre
Paulina Rubio, Pau-latina
Daniela Mercury, Carnaval Eletronico
Aldo Brizzi, Brizzi do Brasil
Daby Toure, Diam

also I haven't heard the new Mark Chesnutt, Savin' the Honky-Tonk, but I've heard really good things

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 30 September 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

How about that Antena reissue Camino del Sol. Makes me happy something fierce.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that Brizzi do Brasil album, Begs! It's a dense listen and opens up under scrutiny.
If you've NEVER heard Devin, I'd probably recommend you start with "Just Tryin' Ta Live" before moving on to the new album.
Also the Ebony Rhythm Band are hot like fire!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, f.c.t., excellent. have you ever heard any arnaldo antunes before this? he's my new brazilian hero...the one Titas record I have is really great, and I kind of love Tribalistas but not as much as say Carlinhos or Marisa solo.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

xxxxx post or whatever, I don't know how that works quite yet...

I've followed Masta Ace since Me and the Biz and since I constantly mistook him for being on the "The Symphony"(I knew it was either him or K Solo, it was Craig G). Slaughtahouse is in my every blood cell and I _know_ his flow wasn't emenimish before DA(especially the first half). I've noticed their VOICES sound alike naturally but that's a coincidence, or at least something not relevant to what I'm saying (very relevant to the general perception, granted). I see nary a trace of Ace's old style in Emenim, not even latter day stuff like Crooklyn Dodgers.
I've already been accused of being bitter today for posts like this

tremendoid, Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Begs, my Brazilian knowledge ain't too hot and could use a little polish. I do have the Tribalistas album but I haven't really listened to it much. You recommend I pull it out and spend some time?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

wait he was on the Symphony. Those floppy hats were like Clark Kent's glasses to me. It could have been Monie Love for all I know.

tremendoid, Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Forks: Well, I think that record was like #12 or #13 last year, but yeah. Here's the key to Tribalistas: think of the context: three of the big-but-not-HUGE Brazilian stars making a record in two weeks from scratch. Listen to how it devolves to gentle sad pop, even though one of the players is an avant-garde new wave growler and another is a Big Fat Rhythm guy and the third is a folkie artsy hippie chick. It's the saddest gentlest thing.

But there's so much that's more immediate, to me: Virginia Rodrigues' second record, Livro by Caetano, any of the late 1960s Gilberto Gil or Jorge Ben up till maybe 1978, Cris Aflalo and Daniela Mercury in the present day...

O I did it again. This needs its own thread yo.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 30 September 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i just discovered a really cool label, http://www.propermusic.com/, that puts out these 4cd boxes of old time-y music for seriously like 20$ each. and they have a nice thickish book to go along with it. i picked up Good News: 100 Gospel Greats. it's a little heavy on the accapella stuff, but still it's pretty great. next i think i'm gonna pick up Bluegras Bonanza.

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 30 September 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

some other picks i've been totally digging lately, all in the funky, psychedelic country mold, and i've talked about them all in my psych country thread

Space Opera - S/T
Euphoria - A Gift From Euphoria
VA - Country Got Soul
Tony Joe White - best of
Joe South - Introspect/ Don't It Make You Want to Go Home?
Gene Clark - No Other
The Byrds - Sweetheart of the Rodeo & Notorious Byrd Brothers
Lee Hazelwood - The Complete MGM Recordings (These Boots Were Made for Walking)

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 30 September 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Begs: I'm hunting Caetano and Gil; this DOES need its own thread.
Thanks for the pointers tho'.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 September 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

what'd you end up buying?

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'll tell ya, Jaxon, I ended up being startled by the fine new batch of used vinyl that I found at the record store. I trembled a little. All kinds of neat stuff that I couldn't pass up for the low low prices they were asking. I left a happy man. I will list everything I got on the Rolling Vinyl thread. I spent over a hundred bucks and it was well worth it. The two dudes in charge of taking in CDs for trade were not there however. I had filled a big bag with stuff I didn't need anymore. So I left my big bag there and they called me later and I'm going back tomorrow or the next day to get stuff with the 70 dollars in credit that I have.

Aren't you glad you asked?

When I go back, I'm definitely gonna pick up the first Devin The Dude, and the new Dizzee. they had a comp there called simply *GRIME* with 3 or 4 different acts on it, but I can't remember who they were now. They also had some Kompakt stuff that I don't have. Justus Kohncke album and that KOLNKOMPAKT Mayer thing. Neuhouse? Is that what it's called ? Do I need those? ILM has made me a KOMPAKT slave. Not that I'm complaining. They didn't have a lot of the other stuff that people mentioned. But I have this thread for a reference for future buying. I kept staring at the LOW box like an idiot. And an Acid Mother Temple cd box that I KNOW FOR A FACT that I don't need, but that I nonetheless want.

But more importantly: Do I NEED that last Phoenix album? I looooooved the first one. Will I be disappointed?

Anyway, thanks for the tips, everyone. I will let you know what I think of Dizzee and Devin on the appropriate threads.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm pretty sure that Grime comp you were looking at was the Reflex comp

rephlex get grimey

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's the one.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you might dig the Travis Morrison album, Scott. Did you like the D-Plan with the rhythm section out and lots of sound effects in its place. The quirk business and the lyrics kind of clash for your attention but it's loaded with stuff. Paul Simon meets TMBG. At least four songs from the perspectives of presidents on coins. I'm using descriptions that may not be the most encouraging but it means you should definitely get it if you're still intrigued.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

uh the second sentence should have some words added to make it two sentences, but I think you get it.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

or David Byrne meets TMBG. It's also kind of his Dream Of The Blue Turtles. The childhood fan of an '80s multi-culti pompous brit who also was a fan of Tom Hanks and Bill Murray comedies so he can't work up the pomposity.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

DUDE, HAVEYOU HEARD RACEBANNON YET? BEST BAND IN TEH WORLD. TWO DUDES FROM RAPIDER TAHN HORSEPOWER! FUCKING INCREDIBLE MUSIC

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Saturday, 2 October 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

dood, did yoo reed mi rapider ting, its brill:

Chuck Eddy:Master Editor!And/Or:1400 Words Split In Half Like A Baby In The Bible

but no, i still haven't heard racebannon. i'm lame-o. and shood bee shot.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 2 October 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Justus Kohncke album and that KOLNKOMPAKT Mayer thing"

those are probably two of my faves. Kohnke makes some very cool, very german, very gay music, that said I probably have listened to at least one of his tracks a day off that album for a couple months now.

hector (hector), Saturday, 2 October 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

xposttosonny: Oh wait, yoo are on that thread. nevermind!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 2 October 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Hector. Although I don't know if I should thank you cuz It might just mean that I'm gonna spend way too much money then is good for me.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 2 October 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I completely forgot to tell everyone that I really really like that first Devin The Dude album that I bought cuzza this thread. I also bought the Dizzee and Wiley albums on vinyl and I like them a bunch too. I play that Devin one more though. It really grows on you. sneaky-like.
