i have the version by Year One, (1969?), but apparently there is a version by Peppermint Rainbow also. do you know this version? which do you consider the superior, those who have heard it?

i don't know the year one one, only the peppermint one. it's twee. their albums are pretty goood though if you like the twee-pop stuff though.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:42 (twenty years ago)

both version appear to be from 1969, the year one is twee-ish as well, sort of like pickettywitch. i like it a lot. i am looking forward to hearing this other version

scott, have you heard merry go round by steve and stevie?

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I dunno. Is it the Monkees song? there were probably a bunch of merry go round songs though. lots of circus and carnival songs too.
Have you ever heard the Three Ring Circus album Groovin' On The Sunshine? scary twee clown orchestral pop-syke. bad trip pop, you know? Like those Hobbits records. Or some of those Love Generation songs.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Peppermint Rainbow weren't scary though. They were more like Green Lyte Sunday or Brooklyn Bridge.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:06 (twenty years ago)

do you have the mp3 of the peppermint rainbow version? i could send you the year one version, now we are all together in our great 27935679235 Mb yahoo/gmail world

as for merry go round, i'm ashamed to admit i don;t know, i only know this version, its from 68, they were australian i think.

i havent heard the three ring circus thing at all, though it sounds great. also, you used the phrase "pop-syke", spelt that way, that has made my day, thats exactly how i am thinking right now!

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago)

that's only cuz I've been on here all day:

www.popsike.com/

I'm big on alternate spellings. "sike" is good too.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:11 (twenty years ago)

have you heard those two Hobbits records on Decca? I love them, but they aren't for everyone. completely creepy acid-pop. Like rancid sugar.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:12 (twenty years ago)

oh, and unfortunately I'm not technically up-to-date. I need a new computer, but I keep putting it off to buy more records.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:14 (twenty years ago)

i havent heard either of them, but you are making them sound enticing...

i havent seen that site before, it looks good thuogh, although it did provide the following, fateful search result:

http://www.popsike.com/php/detaildata.php?itemnr=4021761972

fuck! and, to think i bought this already once, and it never arrived:(:(

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I always knew someone would be crazy enough to put a site like that together. I'm glad they did! I mean, if you are interested in prices. It's nice to know that the A.R. & Machines krautrock album I bought for 30 bucks is going for $250 dollars these days!! It's like the stock market.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:20 (twenty years ago)

are you on slsk scott?

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:32 (twenty years ago)

No, see, it's the computer again. it's old. like me. I've been listening to the BeeGees & the Byrds all day today.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I posted what I bought the other day at the end of the vinyl thread. I've been digging that Robin Gibb album:

i want to hear the wendy and bonnie record, is it good?

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:52 (twenty years ago)

The Pappermint Rainbow version of WYBSAS appears on "Bubblegum Classics Volume One" on Varese Sarabande, a must-have CD for fans of the genre. Had I not seen the artist credited I would have assumed it was Spanky & Our Gang.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

The Wendy & Bonnie album is wonderful. A sad rainy-day gem. In many ways it is a precursor to that diy bedroom pop kinda stuff from the 80's. Like marine girls. But it really does exist in a universe all its own.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 3 October 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago)

the peppermint rainbow album is ACE. i got mine off ebay.
i've never heard of year one.
i now want to check out the three ring circus.
i have the wendy & bonnie sundazed reissue, which is teriffic.

reo, Monday, 4 October 2004 02:50 (twenty years ago)

& i now want to check out the hobbits.
thanks scott!!

reo, Monday, 4 October 2004 02:53 (twenty years ago)

ok, so i finally heard the peppermint rainbow one now, its sort of like ohio express?

i much prefer the year one version, its whimsical and british, kind of like pickettywitch, that bolted together mfi sound that always characterizes british knock offs of american music.

its funny, i think, until recently, i would have preferred the peppermint rainbow one, but this sort of "time for tea" english style has really been appealing to me over the last year or so. you should track this version down, and see what you think

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:57 (twenty years ago)

i'm sure i would prefer it. peppermint rainbow weren't all that. they were probably a hotel lounge act before drug-pop came around. not that i have anything against hotel lounge acts, but...

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:13 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...
^ this seems like nutty talk! ^

have not heard year one version but they would have to go some ways to top the peppermint rainbow version.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 6 October 2006 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 6 October 2006 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

i completely forgot that i started those rolling vinyl threads. jeezus, just as well. i have been buying way too many records.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 6 October 2006 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

dood, what a record. great vocal - she reminds me a little of sandy robinson from peanut butter conspiracy.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 6 October 2006 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

three months pass...
Hello Tim did you hear the Year One version yet i am sure you will agree it is the superior of the two versions

Storefront Church (688), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)

The Peppermint Rainbow's version was released in late '68, charted in January '69. Housewife pop of the highest order.
