I don't think I've heard of a single post-1990 jazz artist besides James Carter (who I love) and David S Ware (who I like in small doses). Is there much else going on in modern jazz?

andy, Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

don't abt S ware actually. don't follow it up as much as i could since i'm more into free improv and electronic fuckery BUT do search Joe morris. There's a top guitar solo alb he released on AUM fidelity.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, there's plenty going on: check out the excellent webzine One Final Note (www.onefinalnote.com) for ideas.

Search Morris, yeah, plus Joe+Mat Maneri, Ken Vandermark, Susie Ibarra, Paul Flaherty, Joe McPhee, Gold Sparkle Band, Fred Anderson, Cosmosomatics, Marilyn Crispell, Daniel Carter, Hamid Drake, Test, etc. etc. etc.... and that's just on the free side.

Saw The Organic Trio (Cooper-Moore, William Parker and Daniel Carter) last weekend in Brooklyn. Totally great.

get "pastoral composure" by Matthew Shipp, one of the most celebrated artists in modern jazz. It is easily available, and is one of his more straightforward recordings.

You thought so? I was really disappointed. Does Cooper-Moore often play the makeshift thing he was using Saturday? What he was playing was wonderful, but the sounds were awful. Also, I wanted Parker to stop playing walking lines so much. I wanted him to play arco more, let the music breathe a bit.

probably some 90s rekkids here:
Compile the Jazz canon 1980 to present day

(I still haven't found a shop in BXL selling any of these yet grrr)

Pharoah Sanders, Hamid Drake and Adam Rudolph released an album in 200 called "Spirits" that easily rivals some of sanders Impulse greats from the 70s in both energy and beauty.

Sonny Sharrock put out an album titled "Ask the Ages" in 91with Pharoah Sanders on sax, Elvin Jones on drums, Charnett Moffett on bass and Bill Laswell on production and it's *wonderful*. doesn't get stuck in any of the trappings of a foul laswell production.

John Zorn's group Masada (with Joey Baron [dr], Dave Douglas [tr], and Greg Cohen [b]) has released millions of wonderful albums that mix Jewish Klezmer melodies and the firey playing of Ornette Coleman. good stuff.

JasonD, Thursday, 7 November 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

that should say 2000. it's really not *that* old

that link to the old thread was pretty dead on. especially this paragraph:
It may not be a consensus view, but I think the most interesting jazz of the past 20 years has predominantly come from the free improv, European, and avant-garde camp however you may define it. I don't think any list of post-1980 jazz albums would be complete without something by Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Evan Parker, John Zorn, Ellery Eskelin, Marilyn Crispell, Michael Moore, Han Bennink, Ken Vandermark, Misha Mengelberg, Steve Lacy, and others.

and the mention of Raoul Bjorkenheim and his band Krakatau. great stuff by an amazing guitarist on ECM that you can usually find for really cheap used. Bjorkenheim just released an album called Scorch Trio on RuneGrammophon (amazing label) that is one of my new favorite albums of any genre. it's guitar, bass and drums and i like to call it "Heavy Modal". so fitting.

I like:
Michel Camilo's new album and his last couple have been really good too. Check out "Thru My Eyes"
Bill Frisell has been releasing consistantly good albums over the last decade a good ones are "Bill Frisel Quartet" and "Have a Little Faith"
Of Course Anything John Zorn or off his label Tzadik has been great in the last decade check out "The Circle Maker"
John Scofield's last two albums have been great.
Also there is Bill Laswel, Fred Frith, Wynton, Branford Marsalis, Wayne Horvitz, Bobby Previte

In fact a good part of the jazz I like has come form the last decade mostly surrounding the NYC improvisational scene, and most of the recent releases (2001,2002) have been excellent, and still have to get around to listening to a bunch of them.

John Zorn's group Masada...has released MILLIONS of wonderful albums"

ha ha ha..."millions"...LOL!

I too love James Carter, there's one song of his that he plays primarily on baritone, and he conjures some monstrous Rahsaan Roland Kirk meets Godzilla squonks that are disgustingly soul-shattering. I wish I knew the name!

As for other modern jazz stuff that's really good, I'd suggest anything Bela Fleck has done...the Flecktones stuff is of course awesome, but also check out the Bela Fleck/Edgar Meyer classical/jazz/grass stuff, it's quite stunning.

Has there been an ECM S/D thread? One should be started.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I am all about new jazz. The hot shit for me is the Vandermark 5, Brian Blade Fellowship, Dave Holland Quintet, Jason Moran, Brad Mehldau, and a bunch of stuff that isn't coming to mind right now.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and Kurt Rosenwinkle and Lan Xang. And Happy Apple and Birth. And Dave Douglas! And Chris Speed and Ben Perowsky.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

vandemark 5- dud for having released an alb of cover versions of 'free jazz classics'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

does anyone like the basist Adam Lane? I heard his quartet with John Tchicai, Paul Smoker and Barry Altschul and I was blown away. One of the best Jazz shows I have ever seen!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

vandemark 5- dud for having released an alb of cover versions of 'free jazz classics'
au contraire, Julio - that sounds brilliant to me! (I can't comment on the execution of the idea obv, since I've not heard it)

General comment: those people mentioning only musicians - please suggest recordings they've made to check out too. Thanks.

Jeff W, Friday, 8 November 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

well i haven't heard it but the concept is a bit 'funny' to me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 8 November 2002 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio: I haven't heard it either but I think they probably went with the idea precisely because it is funny. Plus it can't hurt that they're introducing some of their more casual fans to Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, etc.

charlie va (charlie va), Friday, 8 November 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

um, well its not as if ornette coleman albums aren't available.

OK maybe its a strange thing to do. I think it would have been interesting if they had taken these comnpositions and used diff instrumentation. and did they do an anthony braxton cover?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 8 November 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Braxton: yes, 69L.

I guess my point was that some people who might buy a Vandermark 5 record otherwise might not think to buy an Ornette Coleman record. Maybe not, though.

charlie va (charlie va), Friday, 8 November 2002 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

a friendly warning: John Zorn's Electric Masada is as bad as the Masada we all know and love is good.

doug (doug), Saturday, 9 November 2002 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
New David Murray/Pharoah Sanders thing. Anyone know about this?

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 18 June 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm very interested in getting some William Parker now. I've heard some examples/samples that I liked.
