short but sweet:
Girls Against Boys (aka GvsB) - Classic or Dud?

zebedee, Monday, 11 November 2002 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Great, great band. I have a lot of songs on my computer, more then a thousand, and when I just make a random playlist of them to listen to while I do other things, I usually ignore it all, but when I heard "One Dose of Truth" I stopped to see who it was. If that means anything.

I love GVSB. Just listened to Venus Luxure last night. However, was anybody else disappointed that YCFWYCS was such a retread? Some great individuals tracks (BFF my fave) but after the stellar "One Dose Of Truth" I was disappointed that they didn't go further in that new wavey direction (or in any other for that matter).

I have two albums of theirs--Freak*On*Ica and House of GVSB. The former sucks. The latter is nice, if a bit monotone.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Freak*On*Ica's got some decent tracks on it. The production is too shiny-shiny, but "Roxy," "Park Ave." and "Exorcisto" are very nice. I think if it had done better they may have perfected their new direction. However I doubt anyone was inspired to kiss Scott McCloud's soundsystem after hearing it.

Their new album could not possibly be duller.

My own various thoughts here. Freak*On*Ica is just dire, but I'll agree with Anthony on the word of "Exorcisto."

Er, 'worth.' ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think yer too hard on Freak (**h at least) and too soft on the rather generic Cruise Yourself (*** myself) but yer pretty on point. How would you have rated YCFWYCS? I haven't listened to it in a while but the four stars that guy gave it seems a bit much.

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't heard it but was warned against it, so we'll see. Freak*On*Ica is too absolute a change of what had gone before for me to hear it as anything but a timewasting failure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I LIKE Freak*On*Ica. It's so over the top, it's a riot, and the idea of liking it is funny too b/c at that point just about everyone in DC turned on them. Come on, the lyrics aren't to be taken *super* seriously, not with that delivery! Oh, and they all have nice pants.

The lyrics? What are those?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The Great Natterer (dandydonweiner), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 19:57 (twelve years ago)

what a short thread. haven't listened to them for eons but i happily join the house of gvsb lovers. menacing, uncompromising and cool. the new song doesn't do it for me. it's ok but not really a step forward.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 20:14 (twelve years ago)
