What is the best site about music on the web?

Behzad Tabarrok, Tuesday, 5 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aren't you reading it right now? ;)

Josh, Tuesday, 5 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think we're the best music site on the web, ha. Maybe if all the people I know's best stuff was compiled here, it would be, as it stands I don't have time to make it as good as it should be.

Off the top of my head I'd say Motion - good writing about interesting music, which beats Pitchfork by dint of the 'interesting' bit, though Pitchfork is still good.

Actually though the best music site on the web is Popjustice.

http://djmartian.blogspot.com/

Where else on the web would you find the best music across the sound spectrum celebrated in one place? from Norweigan dark metal to tech house to post rock to electro industrial to jungle to Tool to ambient to Zan Lyons to Trans Am to techno to noisecore acts like Botch to the brilliant Cave in - I am the only British person to enthuse about this band on the web?

come on over to http://djmartian.blogspot.com/ there are also links to other best music sites on the web

to be honest there are so many styles, genres of music these days - most music websites have set agendas be concentrating on particular niches, for diversity of music reviews however, Splendid does an excellent job.

DJ Martian

Announcement - Late Sunday 17th December - DJ Martian announces his Top 40 albums of 2000

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 6 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Except Freaky Trigger ;-D

Allmusic.com

Essential for reference in combination with Napster/other file sharing protocol.

All the rest is ego.

chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 6 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, allmusic.com is all about ego too. When one has written a lot for it, that is. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A tie between Tangents and Skykicking. FT inferior by only the slimmest possible margin.

If only we could impose some Eurovision-esque rule that you cannot vote for yourself (yes, I mean you, DJ Martian).

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 6 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, I agree, but I never read the write ups on All Music though, I just use it for track-listings and bibliographies, it's unchallengable for that.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 6 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Both Elidor and Surface vs Depth have me checking back daily despite the horrendously infrequent updates, which suggests an insane level of devotion on my part. Freaky Trigger used to be the immediate response, but as NYLPM and A Loafer's Discourse continue to take up most of Tom's time I tend to think of him as more of a cultural hack (a la Daddino Esq.) rather than as a music critic per se.

When I understand Josh's posts I think his blog's wonderful. That's about half the time by my reckoning.

For the "big name" sites whose writers I'm not compelled to compliment, I'll just list the usual: Motion, Tangents, Simon Sez...

Tim, Thursday, 7 December 2000 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A reward for Tim's patience (and anyone else's):

A minor update on Elidor at last; new Top 10, new thoughts (well, a sentence or two), new links. Proper writing resumes at the weekend, with luck.

Duane Zarakov, Wednesday, 31 January 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What has happened to FREAKY TRIGGER?

Not long ago the Nipper indicated that he had put a Paul Morley interview on it. But I can't see it. Perhaps I misunderstood him.

A year ago I wrote an article on ATP. This is not evident from the archives, neither.

Is FT still publishing new material? Is old material still available?

the trigfox, Monday, 12 April 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

allmusic.com - it's as close to objective criticism as it is possible to get (i.e. not very, but still...).

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Monday, 12 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

One day, soon, I am going to revive this, again, and someone 'from' FT will - answer it, or me.

the trigfox, Monday, 12 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

www.markprindle.com is, without a doubt, THE GREATEST MUSIC SITE ON THE INTERNET!!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 12 April 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, only if you have his taste in music.

Fluxblog is the zeitgeist.
Woebot has the best taste.
Jahsonic I still got love for but Jan doesn't change it often enough.
Tofuhut is idiosyncratic.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I'm idiosyncratic!
That's good, right?
It rhymes with articulate!
It doesn't?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Now you're veering into eccentric

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I try.
truth be told i'm just overtired and silly.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Another vote for Mark Prindle over here.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, only if you have his taste in music.

Nah! I could take or leave all that hardcore nonsense he keeps raving about. They're the Meatmen and they suck!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have your atp piece pinned to my wall.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite music sites, in terms of essays and such, are Clap Clap Blog and Woebot. That's the gold standard to me.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's the Prindle addy incidentally:

I am touched, about the ATP piece.

Yet your wall is perhaps now the only place one can find it.

So I am still wondering:

What has happened to FREAKY TRIGGER?

Not long ago the Nipper indicated that he had put a Paul Morley interview on it. But I can't see it. Perhaps I misunderstood him.

the beefox, Monday, 19 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think, O bee, that the lack of archive link to your ATP piece is an oversight. Perhaps someone could correct it. The article itself is safe and sound, here. We talked about it, a little, here.

I believe new material is still being published, when time is available.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 19 April 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, we talked about it, a little, here.
