Prince songs for crush mixtapes

Years ago, someone who was courting me put "Gett Off" on a crush tape for me. It worked. "Erotic City" would be even better.

I once put "I Wanna Be Your Lover" on a crush tape -- I didn't get the guy, but when he listened to the tape he did go "I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU!" The same guy has used "Raspberry Beret" on all his crush tapes, often to successful effect (because what girl wouldn't swoon over "Raspberry Beret"?).

What is your history with Prince and crush mixes?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I made "Adore" our unofficial prom song junior year. *smile*

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I've thrown "17 Days" on many a pitching-woo type mixtape

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I used "I Wanna Be Your Lover" once. It worked for a week and then it was "Maybe we should just be friends again." Most recently I've used "Take Me With You", on which the verdict is still out.

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

1999 is its own Prince crushtape. At least it was for me and Grace Dulaney in high school. Well, that and Cameo's Alligator Woman. Damn I miss that girl.

I would always include "Starfish and Coffee."

http://www.freakytrigger.co.uk/c90go5.html is one of the many ILx-affiliated places I have spoken at length about my undying love for "Just My Imagination (Live in Amsterdam 8.18.88)" and in this particular instance about its appearance on a CD I made for my then-girlfriend.

prince is funny because every new girlfriend he had he would go in the studio and make a tape for.

every girlfriend ive ever had has been embarressed by my prince obsession. i tried singing adore to my current lover last night and she laughed at me. i would put these songs on a prince crush-tape (in this bad ass order):

sometimes it snows in april
she loves me for me
anna stesia
do me baby
under the cherry moon
when u were mine
pink cashmere
joy in repetition
i love u in me
insatiable
forever un my life

chaki (chaki), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Batdance!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno.....mixtapes for people you have crushes on are a delicate thing, and Prince's work seems to be a bit too heavy-handed and overtly libidinous for this task (i.e. what you may read as a simple declaration of love, they might read as a sleazey come-on.) Approach with caution.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

do a killing joke compilation instead.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

That's why it's all in the song selection, Alex. You're not going to convince someone you're interested in romantic wooing if you put "Jack U Off" on the mix, but "Adore" or "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" should cause maximum swoonage.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Fair enough, Dan and up yours, Julio.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry: Depends on the someone you're interested in, doesn't it? I wasn't a drama geek in h.s., but I was in a couple of musicals, and when we played Dirty Mind everyone came a-runnin' regardless of gender and preference. Don't discount "Jack U Off" if the mood is right....

Matt C., Monday, 18 November 2002 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Some girls swoon over the Purple Rain '80s nostalgia/romantic pop; some girls like Prince's filthy mind (like me: "so move your big ass 'round this way so I can work on that zipper, baby, cuz tonight you're a star, and I'm the big dipper"); some girls (also like me) give it up for the soul and the funk. There's a Prince song for every girl.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

It! It! It!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

My ex (you know the one) was an even bigger Prince fan then me if you can believe that; we saw a club gig he did together. I don't really make mix tapes (I don't own a tape deck), but any potential crush *must* like Prince.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

So I guess it's no good if the only Prince I have is "When Doves Cry", eh? I really do intend to get around to liking Prince at some point.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Because the Boulez tapes just don't seem to be working.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know that there's a Prince song for this girl Jody. Not one that's gonna make me swoon at any rate. Yes yes... I hate fun!

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that Sean doesn't really like him either! Next Toronto FAP will be all about not liking Prince.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I've used "It" before, too. And "Forever in My Life" was on my prom mix.

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

(obvious subtext = I need to court someone like Kim. I haven't been checking out the Girlfriend Stealers link from her home page for nothing.)

sundar, pressing submit against my better judgment) (sundar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

haha! But, if I remember correctly, I'm far too old for you Sundar!

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait a minute; what possible reason would you have for saying you think I don't like Prince?? I LOVE Prince!!!

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant Sean Carruthers (from Toronto).

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"Adore" without a doubt "Pink Cashmere" is also good
and depending on the setting "Erotic City"

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"Pink Cashmere" deserves more attention than it gets. Also much props to Chaki for including it AND "Joy In Repetition"

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"If I Was Your Girlfriend"

But perhaps this would only work for Crossdressers?

gazza, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:39 (twenty-three years ago)

That song is so misinterpreted.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I was only being silly. Ive always found it very sexy. (and Im not a crossdresser, except on Thursday nights)

And Cream obv.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 08:41 (twenty-three years ago)

y'know, it might just be easier to list Prince songs that wouldn't work on a crush mix tape

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 08:53 (twenty-three years ago)

H is OTM.

Thought in my head upon noticing a particular woman's shelf of Prince bootlegs a few yrs ago:

"Maybe I'll marry her... Maybe I wo -- yes, I will marry her."

I did in fact marry her.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

jel - I kiss you

(well, you made me laugh out loud anyways)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

"When 2R In Love" can make or break a relationship.

briania, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

prince songs that WOULDN'T work on a crush mixtape:

"the CROSS"!

(interboard textuality. DO YOU SEE?)

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Emancipation disc 2 is Prince's own crush mixtape. From "Sex in the Summer" and "One Kiss at a Time" to "Let's Have a Baby" and "Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother, Wife."

Ben Williams, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Prince song NOT to put on a crush mix-tape...

"Pussy Control"

Prince song to put on a crush mix-tape...

"Love Bazaar"...in fact, listen to that song every single chance you get, it's a-frickin-mazing

nickalicious, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I probably wouldn't put the last track on Come on there...

zebedee, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't put "Papa" on there, either, but for completely different reasons.

"Forever In Your Life" is URGENT AND KEY, btw.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I've put both "Girl" and "Come" on crush tapes in the past and, boy, did they ever do the job.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
Sister OTM.
