"Classic or Dud": Classic or Dud

So I'm sure I'm not the first person to mention this, but does it occur to anybody here that almost NO albums or bands are either classics OR duds, per se? Don't 95 percent of them fall somewhere in between? (Guess there's way more duds than classics though, maybe.)

chuck eddy, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

its just a good way to set out whats good and bad about a band/album/track/whatever - more often than not with 'classic or dud' thread you get a pretty decent balanced argument so its worthwhile. maybe it would make more sense to call it 'Pros & Cons' i dunno

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

'Classic or Dud' is a 6.8.

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I like how Dave Q stated it in this thread, about eight posts down.

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow...is this *THE* Chuck Eddy posting this thread? Cool. Hey Chuck....why no Misfits in your STAIRWAY TO HELL guide, dagnabbit? Whatsamatter? They not cool enough for ya?

To address your question, I agree that most selections usually fall somewhere between those two polar extremes, but I think they're used as terms simply as a means of reference. It's catchier, after all, than saying: "Grand Funk Railroad: Metza-Metza or They're kinda alright."

To Alex -- yes, that's him. Read the other threads some more. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's now the time for Alex to post a picture of the Misfits.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

There are no duds, only classics. Or said another way, there are no classics, only duds.

we're stuck with it now. 'request for discussion' works better (and is ideally what all "c&d" threads'd turn out to be anyway), but it sounds a little dull..

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud. ILM is too jockist at times.

hstencil, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "classic or dud" cuz it reminds me of those "spin it or bin it" type audience-participation segments on commercial radio stations.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

it's wonderfully binary and stimulates discussion. and nobody takes it *that* seriously, so they?

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Binary, as in, "Yeah, I'd hit it."

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not going to say it's dud cos it's the only 'meme' I've ever started!

Example of 'amazing' spread of C-or-D!

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22classic+or+dud%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&scoring=d&selm=401c53f1.0112182131.7217c537%40posting.google.com&rnum=3

This meanwhile is the secret origin of Classic Or Dud. I was hoping for symmetry's sake it would be from when I had a Chuck Eddy quote in my .sigfile but no. "And despite the title, I just intended
opinions, not a forced 'Classic!' or 'Dud!' rating."
.

The first C-or-D thread - "Votes are tallied"!!!! I *think* I was joking.

Classics Or Duds: The Wedding Present

The first C-or-D: C-or-D thread -

Classic Or Dud: Classic or DUD?

The basic idea was to half-jokingly force people to give an opinion on stuff, after a spate of 'list threads' on alt.music.alternative. I thought that by naming a specific album and making people answer you might get a better response than saying 'name some great albums'. I think I underestimated the capacity for discussion.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

that google link is wierd, things like that give me the feeling that someday ilx will take over the world...

robin (robin), Thursday, 21 November 2002 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

We will. And I will be referred Super Amazing Emperor Guy.
People will come up and dance while speaking to me, saying things like 'your dudeness' and 'your badassedness' at the beginning of every sentence.

We will all have double-awesome suits that are more comfortable than your favorite jeans. Everyone will carry laser blasters, and all the girls on the list will pilot huge japanese-built robots armed with whips.

Legislative sessions will go like this:

"Free drugs for homeless people, final vote! The representatives from NYC!"
"Classic! Dud! Classic! Classic! Classic! Classic! Dud!
"The representatives from London!"
"Classic! Dud! Dud! Dud! Dud! Classic! Classic! Classic! Dud!
"The representatives from the rest of the world!"
"Dud! Classic!"

Yes. An unstoppable dream.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 21 November 2002 02:55 (twenty-three years ago)

The first C-or-D: C-or-D thread started on my 26th birthday.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 21 November 2002 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

mitch I think that first rfd thread was mine! what are you saying?!

Josh (Josh), Thursday, 21 November 2002 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Josh: I think that I started the RFD threads or maybe the RFIs (Request For Information). In either case they aren't v. popular. But I just want to prove that you have competition in the dull pedant sweepstakes.

The amusing and good part of C or D (as has been argued elsewhere by tom i think) is that (in an ideal world) forcing people into more extreme positions wheedles out their stronger and more interesting/problematic arguments into the spotlight, thus yeilding more thought and entertainment. A sort of antidote to the "everything gets a 7" critic-lite complacency of the ahahahaha "establishment".

I think ILM is a fairly "jockist" place sometimes in terms of intellectual showboating -- but that's where all the fun is, and I lurve this complaint coming from the PRL contingent of all places. "pure rock fury" ahem hem hem.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 21 November 2002 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

sterl, you and sundar and I can start our own board where all the threads are rfds

Josh (Josh), Thursday, 21 November 2002 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's nice to see ned was twee as fuck, even back then.

Quoting one of Long Fin Killie's most misanthropic lines = twee?

It all boils down to robotech.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 21 November 2002 06:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Robotwee, if Jess is to be believed. He seems to forget all the dismemberings and...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 November 2002 07:17 (twenty-three years ago)

robot wee? wouldnt that corrode?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 21 November 2002 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

it would be oily

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 21 November 2002 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I think ILM is a fairly "jockist" place sometimes in terms of intellectual showboating -- but that's where all the fun is,

I don't have a problem with it per se, I just think it's funny given that most people I know who are into music eschew the idea that their fervor for it may match the fervor of, say, a sports fan.

and I lurve this complaint coming from the PRL contingent of all places.

Contingent? Okay, so jack cole and I have played music together (every time I've been in Portland this year), but I would think it'd be obvious from reading the PRL (www.pataphysics-lab.com) that it's not so much at all about "x band is better than y band" posturing. Not that ILM is totally that either, but there sure is a lot of it around. If we want to quantify music so badly, what's the difference between that and comparing batting averages? Quarterback ratings?

"pure rock fury" ahem hem hem.

Funny you bring that up since the guy who writes that blog (although it's been blank for some time now) hardly ever posts to ILM, if at all. Actually, I don't think he ever has.

Ah, what the hell. Just keep painting with those broad strokes.
