this is the thread where me and electric sound of jim discuss the melbourne indie scene

so what do you like jim?
i must admit i never have heard tugboat. and it's been a long time since i saw any bands in melbourne except small goods because a friend of mine follows them around everywhere they go. i also know the kids in fort mary but have thus far avoided seeing them play because i can feel it in my waters that they're going to be really bad. (jonno if you ever read this... um, boy is my face red. the fort mary emails rule though!!)
past memories: sandro were really awful.
i like gaslight radio though. i have a feeling that ned would like them but i could be totally off the mark.

minna (minna), Thursday, 21 November 2002 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i have a really bad feeling about this thread - it's going to come back and bite me, you watch.

minna (minna), Thursday, 21 November 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

p.s. anyone else can discuss the melbourne indie scene if they want to!

minna (minna), Thursday, 21 November 2002 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw gaslight radio when i was in melb a little while back and thought they were damn fine. 'hitch on the leaves' is a gorgeous record but they don't seem to have done much since and that came out, in, what, '98? (correct me if i'm wrong). they played in sydney earlier this month but i missed them. i envy that melbourne's managed to retain its live venues. sydney's a wasteland as far as that goes, though the annandale and sandringham have both reopened recently, so there might be some hope yet.

angelo (angelo), Thursday, 21 November 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

WTF is the deal w/ Minimum Chips?!?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned does indeed like Gaslight Radio.

Are Gersey from Melbourne? I like them (desperately unfashionable I know).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 November 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

'hitch on the leaves'

yep, it came out in 98, i remember because i saw them support pulp then! i think they brought out one or two singles since then but yes mostly they've been very very quiet. (not surprising for a band with one member who always plays with his back to the audience)

gersey have a member in common with gaslight i think - gaslight were originally from brisbane but are now official property of melbourne, so i assume the same for gersey. the truth be known i can't remember what gersey sound like despite having seen them once...

minna (minna), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

minimum chips are droney + lofi and sound like a gloomy stereolab - they had a 'greatest hits' come out this year... it gets a bit samey for me but there are still some good songs. i like 'furniture'

minna (minna), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

(i've been looking around mono.net and please disregard my blatant misinformation about this shared gersey/gaslight radio member, i made it up.)

minna (minna), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned does indeed like Gaslight Radio.

Quite so. Proof! And the band were kind enough to send me their latest EP, which I shall review for the new CTCL, now that I think about it! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 November 2002 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

man, i wish i'd discovered the thread a little earlier than now.

Gaslight Radio always surprised me by being rather good indeed. Their biggest problem is laziness. I used to be in a band with their keyboard player.

Gersey are Melbourne through and through. On record they are stunning, live they have a tendency to be hideously dull, although a recent show I saw of theirs was quite excellent. I definitely endorse the purchase of either (or both) of their albums.

I used to adore Min.Chips but I got sick of their recordings. It's reasonably well know what my opinion of the Wadley brothers' bizarre approach towards sound is.

Hmmm.. what else..

Tugboat are poised to take over! No, not really. Especially not now that Architecture In Helsinki are back. Apparently it's desperately uncool to not like them. I haven't heard their recordings yet, but again they have never come across well in a live setting.

Registered Nurse are back to remind us that rock needn't be garage, pub or punk.

I haven't seen Fort Mary. Love of Diagrams are fucking ace. Diving Bell are like late-80s Perth and rock my world with their velvety sounds.

Jet are boring rock nonsense.

I could go on and on and on and on

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 21 November 2002 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet if Trouble Funk played Melbourne, they'd change the lyric in "Drop The Bomb" from:

Can I drop the Bomb on the East Side Crew, Now East Side Crew, Now what you gonna do?

to:

Can I drop the Bomb on the Melbourne Crew, Now Melbourne Crew, Now what you gonna do?

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Friday, 22 November 2002 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I second the Love of Diagrams...er...love. Kinda somewhat blew Ninetynine off stage at their record launch.

Mike Stuchbery, Friday, 22 November 2002 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

if they had vocals (and they don't really need them) they'd be on the cover of the fucken NME faster than you can say Tasmania.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 22 November 2002 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Gersey almost made me feel sick because when I saw them I was developing an aversion to those sincerely soppy rhythmless Augie March/Something for Kate-ish types. I hated the way they would slowly and metronomically bang away at a chord, gradually building up "emotional intensity" or whatever, and then drop their heart-shattering chord changes. I hated the way it was so boringly effective, the way it pushed my buttons the way Radiohead, Mercury Rev & even Boards of Canada used to. I thought I was being all ILMist-popist by deciding that they sucked. Idunno maybe I was wrong.

Keith McD (Keith McD), Friday, 22 November 2002 05:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I think spending 8 minutes of a 10 minute song building up to the climax is overkill. Their shorter songs don't seem so cynically put together.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 22 November 2002 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

shout outs to Kirsty Stegwazi (what was her band called?), the Foots (well, the purple shirt they gave me), & Tugboat. Where were the Sugargliders from? I'm fairly sure Twelve24 were Melbourne-based too, but I've only heard their cover of "Velouria" (& they've broked up).

haha though re : australian music I still regard it as some outback wasteland of punkmetal, with the exception of melbourne as indiepop city. & er Avalanches & Spiderbait (though I've only heard "Arse Huggin' Pants" & don't want to spoil it) & possibly Gerling.

ps : tugboat should continue the proud melbourne indiepop tradition of touring to dunedin! & have mad FAP action!

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 22 November 2002 05:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Kirsty was in Bedridden and is now in the Bites. The Foots are ace but seem to have fallen off the face of the earth. The Sugargliders are Melbourne thru'n'thru - they became the Steinbecks but are now just the duo of Meadows brothers once more..

Twelve24 are from Sydenee and are lovely peeps. ver 'boat would lurve to come to Noisyland (esp Dunedin).. if any nice NZ kids can send me details of venues/bookers/other useful stuff 'twould make it all happen faster!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 22 November 2002 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

any nice NZ kids can send me details of venues/bookers/other useful stuff
doorag, lady di & rainy to thread!

(& - are their any good local compilations? & um minna - don't suppose you could suggest the local dub/jungle/house/hip-hop worth investigation? have Shapeshifter been gigging?)

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 22 November 2002 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

are their any good local compilations?

hmm.. no. i could put one together?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 22 November 2002 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
oops ess kay i'm sorry i didn't see yr question 5 months ago : (
i'm afraid i wouldn't have been much help anyway and still aren't.

i'm reviving this thread to talk about buying the architecture in helsinki record against esoj's advice which is unbearably t*** and jim i'm so sorry i ever doubted you! i couldn't even listen to it the whole way thru so i'm being very unfair on it but whatever, it sux.

minna (minna), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

hey minna & jim i'm drinkin fosters!
yeah jim yr band should come over here, f'sure, i'd do what i can to help you set up a show.

duane, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone know what happened to the guys in The Paradise Motel?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

heheh minna.. hope you didn't pay too much for it!! :)

NZ planz are taking shape. gotta be before the end of the year, it's just gotta....

Does anyone know what happened to the guys in The Paradise Motel?

no - it's all a bit of a mystery. i've seen Merida around Melbourne twice in the last year or so but I have no idea if she's still doing music things..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

hi duane :)

heheh minna.. hope you didn't pay too much for it!! :)

CD Discounts to the rescue! (i still paid too bloody much)

fort mary broke up btw due to this thread no doubt

kind of weird that the lucksmiths hadnt been mentioned on this thread til now.

I could go on and on and on and on
i dare ya!

minna (minna), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yay for CD Discounts - that's where I got my Blue Nile LP for a dollar

Anyone for a thread on Australian hiphop? (or a Melbourne FAP?)

Keith McD (Keith McD), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a thread on aussie hiphop about a week ago!

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

put your faith in god!

padua, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

minna there was a Lucksmiths thread a few weeks ago!

i have to say i'm very disappointed with the Melbourne scene as at today.. it's terrible when the only good bands seem to be those of people I know..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

my thread on aussie hip-hop. please contribute!

(also : flatmate h*len came back from melbourne two days ago with some free music weeklies - one of them had a singles column written by t*m f*nney!!!)

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

have any of you Aussies listened to this album, [a track was played recently on BBC's Mixing it - impressed me, astonishing complex piano playing with looping hypnotic sampling sound effects]

was it a 2002 or 2003 release in Oz?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Excellent. I'll be there wif knobs on.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I really wanna hear some death:wolf!, maybe snap! krak! le pop! after and0ru from d1e! d1e! d1e!'s reports (haha, exclamations marks are the new "the" (even tho I'm part of this trend)); matth3w (brun3ttes manager/&c) reckons I shld check out lakes (who's coming over here) & your wedding night are worthwhile. melbournites?

etc, Thursday, 19 August 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't be polite about this, your wedding night are a hideous abomination. i just don't. get. it.

i've heard good things about the others, in particular death:wolf seem to be picking up fans left right and centre.

purple patch (electricsound), Thursday, 19 August 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i assume you're well aware of the tranquilizers steve?

purple patch (electricsound), Thursday, 19 August 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

haha thanks for the warning, I was already uneasy since matth3w likes ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI.
I really wish I was in a death:wolf!-style band when I was eighteen, grrrr. I'm working up the nerve to email them.

xpost: no! what're they like?

etc, Thursday, 19 August 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

tranqs are the NU-CLEAN.. great tunes. gtr/drums/keys, getting v big over here at the mo

purple patch (electricsound), Thursday, 19 August 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

if I really really liked Architecture In Helsinki when I saw 'em play a free lunchtime gig last month, and thought the fun of the arrangements outbalanced the tweeness of the everything, would I be disappointed if I subsequently bought their vinyl releases?

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 23 August 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

difficult to say. probably not disappointed, no. i'm not nearly as down on them as i used to be, and would even go so far as to say i rather like about five tracks from their album ("the owls go" still irritates the buggery out of me)..

purple patch (electricsound), Monday, 23 August 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

best new band in melbourne at the mo is Becus... late 80s british girly indiepop in a sundays/all about eve vein, beautiful songs.

purple patch (electricsound), Monday, 23 August 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

best band in melbourne full stop is Light Music Club

purple patch (electricsound), Monday, 23 August 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Any love for that new Sand Pebbles album? I like it a lot but it does seem to have gotten a heap of hype.

Shady Loch Lenin (haitch), Monday, 23 August 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

hey dude the inclusion of WOLFMOTHER renders yr list highly suspect! do you like TEH MARS VOLTA?

also, what about ALWAYS (or whatever thee fvck al3x v1vian(o) is calling himself these days, ect ect ect.

etc, Friday, 18 November 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

i figure he's still doing what he does somewhere or other. anywhere i'm not, preferably

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

are the Drones from Melbourne? I dig them

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah tho i think they may have 'permanently' relocated to europe?

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

they were 'originally' from perth. i've heard they've bailed too.

gem (trisk), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

suspect huh.. every artist on that list are musically different. more i forgot to add (these bands come from all over the place but play in melbourne regularly):

- architecture in helsinki
- new buffalo
- baseball
- ninety nine

there are loads more. i love melbourne!
melbourne music scene is world class.
the best bands most of the world might never hear of.

idleidleidle, Friday, 18 November 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

your enthusiasm is noted

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

yay!

idleidleidle, Friday, 18 November 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

I saw clue to kalo earlier in the year, wasn't feeling it at all but maybe it makes more sense on disc.

jim are you referring to the new city city city album when you say that? I am thinking of seeing them at that st jerome's joint (one of those sunday afternoon gigs).

that guy who pretended to be Ya Kid K that one time (haitch), Friday, 18 November 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

both. a lot of people really like what they do, and to be fair they played a gig where i really enjoyed them, but i found myself liking each show less and less. probably worth keeping in mind that i have little time for (a) instrumental bands and (b) 90% of post rock.

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Friday, 18 November 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Love of Diagrams were just on The OC.

ALG, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 04:40 (twenty years ago)

i assume you already knew about the "z nation" album? considering how long there was between "hitch" and that album i'd be expecting to wait a long long time.

Thanks Jim, I aint checked back her for a while, didnt think anyone would answer. Yeah, I got Z-nation as soon as it was out, I was talking about the next one, but yeah, you're right. I shouldnt expect anything before 2008, really.

ALG, Thursday, 1 June 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Thursday, 1 June 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

i'm looking forward to seeing electropoppers Fluorescent this weekend. and the stuff i've heard by actor/model has been very good stuff.

oh lord what a wretched list

i mean i like one or two of those bands but (a) most of them have been round for years anyway and (b) two of my most disliked local bands are on there

i stand by my aforementioned statement

electricsound, Friday, 11 April 2008 06:29 (seventeen years ago)

muscles' list upthread is vastly better

electricsound, Friday, 11 April 2008 06:32 (seventeen years ago)
