Can You Go For an Entire Day Without Hearing a Song?

I mean in the is-it-possible sense. Even though I live in NYC, I've been basically living under a cave these days and still I hear at least 5 songs a day without even trying. I mean, I love music and all, but I don't have a radio and I don't watch TV, I barely ever download mp3s, and I often don't listen to music when I'm working. But I still hear plenty of new music (it might help that I live in Harlem, where songs are blasted on the street and from apartments at all hours of day and night), and my other primary exposure to new pop/hiphop is from the laundromat. Music is always on at the place I buy coffee; I hear bits and pieces of new songs blasting from cars while I walk through the city...I can't escape its clutches!! Fuck you, music!!

i think i could (my apartment building is relatively quiet), but i wouldn't put money on it.

Tomorrow I am making a conscious effort to NOT HEAR ANY MUSIC for 24 hours. Well, I have back-to-back lectures for most of the day, so maybe that's cheating. But still, I think it's gonna be a challenge.

Yeah, yeah, you can throw those argts that "oh, but the sound of cars driving down wet streets is music too" or whatevah but I'm talking recorded music mainly here

let's start a magazine called Fuck You, Music!

Geeta, you should blog your adventures in not hearing/listening to anything, like Daddino's MTV thing:

6:47am
Just rustling trees and early-morning traffic going on, yessir.

8:41am
Fuck! My prof decided to make his point by playing a Dylan song! MY DAY IS RUINED!

Yes, you can. When my housemate is not home, and it's not the weekend (so my neighbours don't blast Thriller) then I can go 24 hours without having to hear music. I live for these days, lately. I have really been hating music lately, and the cure is to go without it for long periods of time, then restore the passion by listening to something you really love.

I love music too much to be forced to listen to bad examples of it. I've actually quit jobs over this before. Forcing other people to listen to your music = aural fascism.

Haha well, I have a lecture on copyright law tomorrow, but I don't think they're gonna use any music for it....no professors here ever do. My 70-year-old reporting professor mentioned Twisted Sister (!!) once I think in an effort to make himself look 'hip with the kids', and I almost fell over.

Awright Matos you're on! "Fuck you, Music!!" the zine! What should be in it?

And I'm gonna start that blog now.

yeah those 48 full hours i spent at university pretty much just sitting in one room last week, if i hadn't spun a couple mp3s..

yes I could and at least once a week I will go an entire day without hearing the stuff.

impossible because at work we have the radio on - sadly on some lame-oh channel which plays celine dion (type) muzick at least every half hour ), i wake up with the alarm clock blasting a the-nu-garage-bandname track,... and quite frankly i could not let myself go without musique for 24 hours.

Jesus I actually thought about this and my stomach began to churn massively, like wanting a cigarette but ten times worse.

I'm doing quite well on my 24 hours without music. I've only got a few more hours to go and then I've done it. (Of course I've got to go to the hardware store and the post office and the chemist this afternon which might make it difficult...)

kate, Friday, 22 November 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck you, REM!!! You ruined it for me! They weren't even playing music in the post office or the hardware store... I dropped into Bits and Bobs for thirty seconds to look for paintbrushes (they had NONE) and was subjected to Losing My Religion. Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!

I thought it would be so easy. I should know better than to leave the house. :-(

kate, Friday, 22 November 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

actually it says 'song' on the title instead of music. yes, I can go on for quite a while without listening to songs actually (though i don't mean to: it just goes that way).
