i was thinking of Neue Deutsche Welle stuff, early New Order, Devo, Tubeway Army/early Numan, PiL.. but conceivably some J-Pop could work, electro etc..

basically angular, sharp, danceable, electronic-influenced stuff with a pop intention (if not necessarily the outcome)

oh god, rereading the title and someone is bound to say this but: Ian Curtis probably owns this thread.

There's a new Belgium comp just out called "beat noir" or something that I really want to hear, all the tracks of which are probably perfect for this thread.

"There's a new Belgium comp just out called "beat noir" or something that I really want to hear, all the tracks of which are probably perfect for this thread."

it could be you're thinking of the german Teutonik Disaster compilation, which is marvellous.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

it's called 'serie noire: dark pop = new beat'. here's the full tracklist:
1 logic system unit
2 the pool jamaica running
3 will powers adventures in success
4 alan parsons project mammagamma (instrumental version)
5 a split second flesh
6 snowy red euroshima / wardance
7 section 25 looking from a hilltop
8 jump funkatarium
9 metro area miura
10 my mine hypnotic tango (instrumental version)
11 grauzone film 2
12 vicious pink 8:15 to nowhere
13 executive slacks the bus
14 john carpenter the end
15 kissing the pink big man restless (original extended version)
16 carlos perĂ³n nothing is true, everything is permitted
17 c cat trance shake the mind

wtf is 'miura' on it? i love it but is there some new law that it has to be included on every new compilation released? aside from that it looks good.

Yes, that's the comp, michael! Thanks for saving me the trouble of looking it up on the N.E.W.S. site.

I love that "Adventures in Success" is on there. I should really start a Will Powers thread sometime...
