only just discovered this (radio channel 911 on the sky dish)
and it appears to be a combination of XFM and radio 2.
just heard this show by a fella called gideon cole (?)
sounded promising, as it was a whole show of hidden gems, unearthed
rarities, hits-that-weren't-that-should've-been etc.
anyone listened/listening to bbc radio 6 ?

answer to question in thread title probably here: school me on the term "rockist"

zebedee, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Weird timing. I got this message two minutes ago:
"For those that missed it (and those that want to hear it again) the Gideon Coe session that went out this morning on BBC 6 featuring a good conversation with Robert and Grant and couple of songs done acoustically (including a wonderful version of "Poison in the Wall") is scheduled to be available later today via a link on Gideon's web page. You will be able to find the link here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/presenters/gideon_coe/
"

That's Go-Betweens related.

i review the singles on phill jupitus's breakfast shows, mondays between 8.30 - 9am... come hear me sound stilted, ill-informed and enthusiastic, followed by a round drubbing of my opinions by said presenters!!!

This could prove to be a fantastic resource.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

The only problem with that Dream Ticket thing is they give you a program with several bits of live recordings they have in the BBC archives. Would rather have 1 band featured for the whole programme myself.

Top marks for the drubbing of Stevie though.

one year passes...
it looks like:

Keith Cameron [Mojo Writer, ex Ammo City DJ, ex NME, ex Xfm DJ, ex Sounds] has joined 6 Music:

New 6 Music presenter, Keith Cameron presents three hours of the best quality, but not necessarily best known, music.

Many will remember Keith Cameron on Xfm pre-capital in 1997/ 1998: Keith Cameron Carve UP show.

Spurred by this thread, Gideon Coe has been the soundtrack to my Bank Holiday and I must say it's rather good.

Cure fans: Thursday is Cure Day on 6 music to celebrate 25 years and Fat Bob will be doing an exclusive interview. Hooray (in advance) for the Listen Again feature!

two years pass...
I'm gonna be on this today. Only the pubquiz feature on Nemone(thinking man's Jo Whiley)'s show at 2.

Anyone know how rigourously playlisted this channel is? If it all?

BenTyler, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty rigorously during the daytime.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone know how rigourously playlisted this channel is? If it all?

it may as well be a pluggers charter ! a small number of tracks playlisted mostly by established artists on major labels and high profile indie labels

even worse is the roundtable show on friday - "let's play the worst singles / tracks sent in by pluggers this week"

djmartian, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

buuuuuuuut it's still better than a kick in the head when you're spending day after day slaving over a dissertation.

and I won the quiz btw. and will be appearing once again tomorrow at the same time.

Uptoeleven, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

Kudos.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

If Round Table had a permanent panel of DJ Martian, Geir and Lex it should be televised.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

It was against a blonde girl from bournemouth. not too much kudos there really.

Uptoeleven, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

That's a bit sexualist!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

She called her team name "The Blonde". but actually that doesn't make it any less so. and it's mroe the fact that she's at bournemouth uni that i am prejudiced against.

i had a question where they played the northern soul version of tainted love and i had to say which 80s duo covered it. that was a delightful question to get.

Uptoeleven, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

Not quite up to the exacting standards of Ken Bruce's Bonnie Wee Popmaster quiz then.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think up am up to those exacting standards myself. but i know that pigs find truffles and that helsinki is the capital of finland.

Uptoeleven, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

another victory today, beating a very pleasant-sounding chap from Huddersfield. luckily remembered. not sure how, that it was jarvis cocker curating meltdown.

am now at 4th place on the leaderboard:

Uptoeleven, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

i used to listen to bbc6. that feels like a long time ago.

pisces, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

'the wind' by warren zevon was the soundtrack to the headnumbing completion of my thesis. radio has too much talking here. i remember channels in france that would play back to back tracks for hours, with no pause and no chat.

whatever, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

6music is for ageing indie kids, the kind that go to gigs by bands like Arcade Fire and CYHSY to 'see what all the fuss is about'.

braveclub, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

what is the fuss about?

whatever, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

It's Radio 1 without the Asbos and Radio 2 without The Organist Entertains.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

I wouldn't try and defend it. It's inoffensive and allows me to listen to music without playing anything so great that I'll be distracted from my work.

Uptoeleven, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

If that's all music is worth one might as well drink tea.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

Don't compare listening to 6music as drinking tea. Tea is awesome.

I don't dislike the music they play but I don't like it so much as not be able to do anything else at the same time. And they played the new Sage Francis track earlier which I rather like.

And teh Phil Hartnoll/Robert Smith track is on their playlist too.

Uptoeleven, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

Music should not be an accompaniment to doing other things. Music should immobilise you.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

i don't disagree. but do you ONLY listen to music when you're not doing anything else? who has time to do that?

Uptoeleven, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

who has time to stop and smell the roses etc.

I tend not to listen to music when I'm working but otherwise I like music to be the focus rather than the accompaniment. This doesn't mean I don't have it on when I'm cooking/eating dinner etc. but then I used to listen to Coltrane's Ascension when getting ready to go to school in the morning so I guess I'm not typical.

Of course, when I'm with my other half, then the song "Music Sounds Better With You" springs instantly to mind... ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

It's closing:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8544150.stm

I never listened to it, not even The Freak Zone (which I really should have listened to every week), but it was nice to know it was there.
