20 YEARS OF DISCHORD box set: Your thoughts?

I personally cannot stop playing "Destructor" by Fidelity Jones, "Summer" by the High Back Chairs, "What Kind of Monster are You" by Slant 6 and "We All Fall Down" by Egg Hunt.

What're your thoughts? A bloated package big on scope but light on quality or required reading for any student of American hardcore/indie?

Your Favorite Tracks from the 20 Years of Dischord Box

That thread never really got kickin' so we might as well start again. The box is not required, but definitely a fine introduction. The first half of Disc 1 is a great intro-DC hardcore, second half a wonderful look at the dawn of emo. Also, the box makes Ian Sevonious sound more like a total Guy Picciotto rip-off in this context. Disc 2 feels muchless crucial (once Blueprint's out of the way). And 3 has a few nice tracks. I'm glad I have it. I'll take Embrace's silly verse-jive over Egg Hunt's silly gregorian chants and you can have Fidelity Jones (waaayyy tooo jam bandy for my tastes). My fave tracks are by One Last Wish, Dag Nasty, Embrace, Fugazi, High Back Chairs, and Lungfish. Great liner notes too.

Could somebody post the tracklist for those of us who don't have it/haven't seen it?

hstencil, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

it's nice to have, especially since i've previously mostly been exposed to the more revered and/or recent Dischord bands, so it's cool to get a full picture of all the different bands they've had through the years. but i think i've only listened to the whole thing twice in the month i've had it. i like going through the liner notes and soaking up the history. as i get into the unfamiliar stuff more, some of it may make it onto my shopping list (Rites, early STT, maybe NOU) but nothing's grabbing me very urgently yet.

also, it's fun to hear the original recording of "Nic Fit".

That Fidelity Jones song sounds just like Phish.

The Dischord box is fantastic. Disc 1 is all the stuff the 14-yr-old DC punk kids (like I was) still listen to (it's a time warp), disc 2 is everything I liked when I realized I looked stupid with green hair. It's all good. Since buying it I've dug out my Smart Went Crazy, Gov't Issue, etc records that had been collecting dust for ages and rocked out a little. "Teenager In a Box" (on GI's "Make An Effort" 7", I think) may be hardcore's greatest achievement.

How bland are some of those bands near the end of disc 2 though--Crownhate Ruin? Woo.

I quite like The Crownhate Ruin, thank you very much. I find them (and their father band Hoover) much less generic than say... SOA, Deadline, Iron Cross, Teen Idles et al.

My favorites are the aforementioned CHR and Hoover tracks, "Blueprint" (of course), "Friend To Friend In Endtime", "Drink Deep", "Punch The Geek", the songs by Happy Go Licky, One Last Wish, Minor Threat... but most of that I listened to before. I hadn't before heard Three, Circus Lupus, Autoclave, High Back Chairs, and they all range from good to great.

The version here of "All Ages Show" sounds much better than the previously released version--much rawer, and with the better of the vocalists.

I would have picked a different Embrace song, personally. Maybe "Dance Of Days"?

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm happy to see that they chose "circles", my favorite dag nasty song, on there.

gygax!, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"That Fidelity Jones song sounds just like Phish."

I haven't honestly heard enough Phish to refute that, but I know I don't like them based on their fan base alone, so for that, Adam, I shall have to smite thee repeatedly with a large frozen sea-bass until you repent and take this comment back!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

some faves from that list:

Faith, "Subject to Change"
Skewbald, "Sorry/Change for the Same"
Marginal Man, "Missing Rungs"
Dag Nasty, "Circles"
Embrace, "Money"
Soulside, "Punch the Geek"
Ignition, "Rebuilding"
Lungfish, "Friend to Friend in Endtime"
The Nation of Ulysses, "Spectra Sonic Sound"
Hoover, "Cable"
The Crownhate Ruin, "Piss Alley"
The Warmers, "Poked it With a Stick"

I woulda put more than one Lungfish song on there. Also, Crownhate Ruin were AWESOME, esp. their first two OOP singles (when Vin/Vic/I forget his name was the drummer).

hstencil, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, hstencil, want to throw those two singles on a cassette for me? ;) I've been trying to get ahold of them for ages, but they rarely appear on eBay or Skylab. I've got the third single and the LP, which are great--and for some reason I thought Vin was on those too.. though I could be wrong, I guess.

Ian Johnson, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Ian, I don't have those singles, unfortunately. I've just heard 'em.

hstencil, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)
